The only problem with Harden is that he doesnt create his own shots, he was the same way at ASU.

Huh? Harden is OKCs best facilitate and playmaker with ball. You couldnt be more off.

Paying Gordon the max is beyond foolish. He is at best, a very good #3. You don't give very good #3's max deals, especially with the importance of the new cap.

I'd much rather pay Mayo 8 million than Gordon 15.

You are undervaluing how good Gordon is but I agree I'd take Mayo at half the money and run.

Just thinking, if the Suns signed Gordon (I think NO will match) and perhaps Beasley, would this be enough to keep Nash in Phoenix. The Suns lacked scorers last season.

Sorry just had to stir the pot.

No. Nash has made it pretty clear that money is his top priority. He'll rationalize everything else.

A healthy Gordon likely keeps the Suns in the back half of the lottery. I hope NO matches.

Not by himself. For two seasons, he was the best player on some really bad Clipper teams that had no supporting cast. If the Suns decide to sign a bunch of mediocre to good players in FA, that might put us back in the #13 spot in next season's draft.

For all intents and purposes, this team is going to be top 5 bad; whether or not Gordon is on board.

I would be fine paying him that, but I think NO would just match it. Seems like a bit of a waste of time.

I agree, NO has already said they will match all offers. Guess Gordon can use these visits to get more money out of NO. Suns can also say we tried to get better.

I think this is what the Suns want to show the fans, that they tried, while keeping their powder (cash) dry except for smaller contracts.

By Durant's 3rd year the Thunder were winning 50 games. This will be Gordon's 5th year. Wade was also injured all season and missed 30+ games to finish that bad.

If you're ok with signing a player who won't make a huge difference to a max contract as the Suns enter a rebuild, then we'll have to agree to disagree.

My point was that even when Durant was a prolific 25 ppg scorer the Thunder were still struggling and able to accumulate talent and that if Gordon was our only piece with this current roster we likely would still struggle. One player doesn't make a team in this league and the max isn't what it used to be. Was Wade worth a max deal when the Heat were terrible? There have been plenty on max worthy players on bad teams, but they have been surrounded by poor talent.

I think Gordon is immeasurably better than Mayo. Memphis couldn't wait to get rid of Mayo for one reason or another. I think Gordon could be a top 10 scorer in this league, he defends well, and he plays his but off. It's a huge risk, but I'm down for it.

The absolute lack of conversation between Nash and the Suns is fascinating. I had sort of assumed that they had an agreement that the Suns would get their other FA's in line and then Nash would look at the improved lineup and see if he wanted to stay. I think Nash would take some less money and stay in Phoenix if we adde say a Gordon and Beasley.

But drafting Marshall and then courting Dragic makes me wonder. Dragic is just plain not coming here if Nash is in the picture.

Dragic/Marshall/Telfair
Gordon/Redd
Dudley/Warrick
Frye/Morris
Gortat/Lopez

Interesting younger lineup. It has scoring punch and some D. I would watch.

money talks, nash is an UNRESTRICTED free agent. he can field others offers first. i dont think he owes the suns anything at all. its our fault for not moving him for something.

but i like the idea of Gordon and Dragic. Two guards with better than average D, with some height and athleticism. would this stunt marshall's development though?

Dragic should know the system. Probably a good deal better than Telfair.

If Nash can't teach Marshall, I'd rather have Dragic than Telfair helping to teach it to him. (both would be even better)

But that doesn't mean I want Dragic. I wouldn't mind him. I think it's preferable to have him and Marshall versus Marshall and telfair/brooks, but not at the rumored price. Up to 5 mill per for Dragic is fine by me. Maybe a little pricey for a guy after you draft Marshall, but just about everything is.

He knows our system. I never meant trade secrets from a great pg.

Sorry but the erratic Dragic won't teach Marshall a damn thing about how to run the PG spot.

One of the marks of a maturing player is to gain consistency. Is it possible that Dragic is finally maturing into a more consistent player? He had the potential all along, we knew that. But it is hard to produce consistently off the bench.

But he is still erratic and far from "running an offense". He is wild and easily gets out of control, not sure what he can teach Marshall.
Marshall is intelligent and probably already knows more about running an offense.

Like any PG that lives in the paint, Dragic needs shooters to spread the floor for him to be effective. You saw in Houston where all his numbers fell off the table because (a) he didn't have a lot of good shooters and (b) he can't shoot himself.

maybe it did take him a while to adjust to the NBA and to his surroundings, being a foreign player. that's something that you can't force upon anyone, to acclimate well to a new home

My point was more about the x's and o's of how on paper it was supposed to be. More in practice, film study, etc....then in games.

Another PG with time in the system would give Marshall a sense of how we want him to run the offense in theory, because everyone else could point it out during the intra-team activities. In games, Dragic does go 'rouge' though and sometimes plays more like a score first pg. I agree he can get totally wild. Though sometimes that does work out.

I do agree with the idea that Marshall might already know what we want. So perhaps it is a moot point to bring in anyone. Marshall might at his core play more to the Suns philosophy naturally than any of the others after coaching. He has some major flaws that could completely limit his ceiling. But his strengths are ones that seem tailor made for our style.

I guess my point is just to have another guy around to make sure that's the case outside of game time and to ease the transition. But I'd be just fine with not having Dragic as well. We have other needs, and having two PG's, and rights to Brooks, means we have cheaper options already in the fold.

But Dragic never really ran a system. When he was on the floor in charge, they catered everything to him, letting him do what came natural to him. It was a lot like KJ's early years, and KJ never really ran a system either. (And Dragic never had KJ's 16-foot-jump shot or elevation)

He did. Just what you are describing is what he ended up doing mostly. Especially early on when he tried he sucked.

His few successes came when he did what he did, not what the Suns wanted him to do ideologically. That said, he continued to make progress, but never with the Suns became proficient in what we wanted him to do. So we both are correct. The Suns tried to get him to and he spent some significant time trying to run the Suns offense, but even as he slightly improved, other areas was where he found his success, and so more and more he played the Dragic way instead. By the end, he definitely was playing mostly the Dragic way.

But again, what he did on the court, doesn't mean he couldn't be a help on the practice court and in study sessions. I'm sure he knows what we want and in theory could help Marshall there.

Finally, the more I think about it, the more it doesn't matter, since I believe Marshall fits our system far better naturally than what Dragic ever did. Plus the pick and roll isn't very hard to learn. It's probably the simplest play to learn offensively. Again, I believe we need to focus on other areas now, so what I was initially basing my opinion on was a whimsical desire to help Marshall if there was nothing else out there. Definitely not at the expense of addressing other needs. But again, it's probably not even necessary given who Marshall is.
