His grace, the Duke of Smell, to be precise.
hIs mAjEsTy the SmeLL.
his stats from limited time last year dont mean anything to me, I am judging his performance last night, not last year. he got 2.8 last night but it was skewed.
His performance last night against guys who are currently getting talked to by their coaches about how they'll be happy to make some calls around the league and see if there's work form them on some other team's practice squad?
Awesome. Suddenly performance in the fourth preseason game is completely meaningful to how a guy will perform in regular season games.
A second round pick fitting right in with the wrecked crew playing in a 4th preseason game. Awesome pick.
im talking about he specifically looked, his leg movement, his vision, his cuts, his power. He looks healthy, strong, quick and elusive.
He could have done it on a field with no defense and I would still say hey, he looks good.
PS: if you are a player in this league you should SHINE when playing 2nd string. He did. Also, he didnt play the turk players, he played vs denvers 2nd string. Most of those players will still be in the NFL come sunday. He stopped playing during the first quarter.
So the whole "hes playing vs guys who will be bagging groceries" doesnt fly.
2.8 YPC is shining against the 2nd and 3rd units? Having to make three goes on the goal line is shining against 2nd and 3rd units?
It's all about comparison to competition. Beanie Wells looked AMAZING against college competition; so did the Saints RB who's been a disappointment.
Ryan Williams looked ADEQUATE against a bunch of guys who may not make the roster for Denver. Here was his rush chart:
2-10-ARI 20 (8:41) 34-R.Williams left guard to ARI 27 for 7 yards (53-S.Johnson).
Drew Stanton Leaves the Game and Ryan Lindley comes in. You can decide for yourself whether other "turk" players are coming through.
1-10-ARI 20 (3:30) 34-R.Williams right tackle to ARI 23 for 3 yards (63-B.Garland; 41-R.Rasner).
2-7-ARI 23 (2:52) 34-R.Williams left tackle to ARI 26 for 3 yards (43-P.Lenon).
1-10-ARI 32 (1:31) 34-R.Williams up the middle to ARI 26 for -6 yards (36-K.Webster). PENALTY on DEN-93-J.Beal, Face Mask (15 Yards), 15 yards, enforced at ARI 26. [NOTE: Even noted Ryan Williams enthusiast Ron Wolfley was criticizing Williams for poor decision-making on this attempt)
1-10-DEN 42 28) 34-R.Williams left tackle pushed ob at DEN 34 for 8 yards (36-K.Webster).
3-2-DEN 23 (13:17) 34-R.Williams up the middle to DEN 20 for 3 yards (93-J.Beal).
1-9-DEN 9 (11:54) 34-R.Williams right tackle to DEN 4 for 5 yards (31-O.Bolden).
3-2-DEN 2 (10:38) 34-R.Williams up the middle to DEN 1 for 1 yard (93-J.Beal).
4-1-DEN 1 (9:57) 34-R.Williams left guard for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN.
One quality run. Most everything else he took the yardage that was blocked for him. That's substantially better than he's done in the past, but it wasn't anything that we haven't seen from Stepfan Taylor.
Ryan Williams' best attribute is that he has Steve Keim in his corner.
EDIT: Be honest--who looked better: Ryan Williams or any of the Denver runningbacks playing against our defense? Want me to put up their rush lines?
Playing better than the stats show is not what I want from my 2nd round draft picks.
What is most sad is that the only reason I feel like we are treading water is because of Carson Palmer. Without him, we would be guaranteed a top 5 pick.
again, to quote the 2.8 is a waste of time. he had limited carries, a 1 yd TD and a 2 yd goal line run along with a play where he got hit in the backfield.
So on 7 carries, two could have only possibly gained 3 yards because the endzone was right there and one he got tackled way before the LOS due to terrible blocking.
I dont care to argue it with you, I thought he looked solid. I watched him play, I dont care what his YPC total was when it ended.
And again, that was denvers 2nd string, not a bunch of guys getting cut.
How about his 12 yard loss which was negated because a defensive player got a finger in his mask?
There are always ways to rationalize play for RBs, but in the end, the good ones get it done and the bad ones don't. The same arguments were made for Kolb and other players who fans wanted to be better than what they actually are. I watched the game and Williams did look ok. The problem is that a #1 or #2 RB should look AWESOME against #2 and #3 defenses and Williams didn't. Once again, playmakers make plays regardless of their circumstances and what we saw last night was Williams not making plays.
It bothers me when people say to throw out stats. Keeping score and keeping statistics is the only verifiable metric in football. It's the one thing everyone should be able to agree on. It's no different than people who say throw out Adrian Peterson's 2 80 yard runs and he only averaged 3 yards per carry that game. Ridiculous. Those runs happened. I don't care if he looked like Gayle Sayers carrying the ball, he averaged what he averaged and it's indisputable.
The other fact is, if he had averaged 5.0 yards per carry, ya'll would be throwing the stats out. Cherry-pickers.
And if he looked good to some folks it's only because expectations had been reduced to 0.

I see what you did there!are about as worthless as Mulli's goal to not eat food from the vending machine. .

Barring any further injuries, I believe RW will be our #2 behind Mendenhall. And given the fact that Mendenhall's knee seems to be a real issue/concern, RW should see bigtime minutes throughout the season. If he does, I think there is a very real chance that he will perform his way into the #1 position.
It's certainly 'sad' if you deliberately ignore all the circumstances leading up to this point.

So what are you saying?
That he hasn't shown anything?
Well then I agree. Cause if he has not had enough carries to say he is not as good as people say then he can't have enough carries to back up he deserves the accolaids he is getting for what he did in the game.
That's just a convenient truth

not crowning him, just saying he looked good enough to be on the rosterAgreed.
My retort.
Get back to me when he does something meaningful in a regular season game.
And when I say that, I mean something that helps the team, not dropping the ball when he is relied on most.
How about he plays 8 games?
So far in this man's career he has produced hype......that is it.
