Saints apparently had bounties out on opposing players

This is disgusting. I hope the penalties are swift and severe. At the very least Payton should be suspended a year and Williams should be banned from the NFL indefinitely.

If I'm Drew Brees I want no part of re-signing with the Saints. They just painted a huge target on themselves and teams are going to go extra hard at them, for this especially division opponents. I see Drew getting a lot of "remember me" shots as Williams calls them next year if he stay with the Saints.

yeah because Gregg Williams and other coaches contributed to the pot.

I read further. I don't know whether or not it would be considered salary cap circumvention or not, but no matter what you call it, non-contract bonuses are not allowed per NFL rules. So even if it was just for interceptions and fumbles and didn't include the bounties, it would still be against NFL rules.

That's interesting. Hadn't thought it about from that angle.

Kurt Warner on 620 Ktar said he had made his decision to retire before that game, but that may just be lip talk.

I dont think we'll ever know.

When he ran back onto the field after the win over the Packers and waved to every part of the stadium, I knew he was gone. He had never done anything like that before, so it sure looked like "Goodbye". I believe him.

this explains why Favre and Warner almost died on the field 3 years ago...

I was screaming at the TV that whole Saints playoff game when they hit Warner in the head at LEAST 5 times...what did we get maybe 1 hit to the head penalty? Then the Favre beating...I know it's football but the rules have changed since the '70's & the refs totally mismanaged their calls in those 2 playoff games!!!

I knew they where totally cheapshotting the QB's & the Saints better hope Brees holds out of the preseason game because if I were Wiz & would bring the house just like the Saints did in this years Niners preaseason opener.

Could the Cardinals be granted the draft picks the Saints will forfeit for this investigation?
Why the Cardinals? This went on for a while; I'm sure the Cardinals were not the only team impacted by the policy.

It's a moot point anyway because forfeited draft picks don't go to anybody else, they are simply gone.

The HOF game just got "very" interesting :)

I hadnt thought that about the impact this will have on the HOF game atmosphere but it sure has just had some spice added to it.

The Saints would forfeit a draft pick which means they give their right to it up, rather than that pick becoming compensation for anyone else.

Just one personal foul IIRC.

So long as the hits that earned the players their bounty, I don't care.

JMHO

Why should you, you're a fan.. there's no impact on you.

What if one of these bounty hits had resulted in paralysis?? I'm still amazed any player would potentially want that guilt on their conscience for $1000-$1500.

I doubt the NFL will take away 1st round draft picks as the union would balk, but I really hope the NFL hammers the Saints and makes an example of them so that any player, coach or team would think twice about having a bounty system.

Why would the union take issue with this which is about player protection when they could do little to stop the Spygate (which had nothing to do with players) punishment which included draft forfeiture?

Anyway this isnt going to affect draft eligible players too much as most likely it will slide them down a slot or two.

I just saw that my initial post was incomplete. I meant to say "so long as the hits that earned their bounty were legal, I don't care."

I know that's still not jiving with what you all think, but I stand by it.

Pat Kirwan just tweeted there could be lawsuits coming forward from the players hurt against the Saints for the 2009-2011 seasons.

Because of the high profile nature (TV, media, fans) of the draft - especially the first round.

And, more importantly, the money the 1st round draft pick(and union) receives.

now granted, i'm an attorney (though not an overly litigious one), but damn skippy i'd be suing if i got injured against that team of thugs during that time period. i'd sue the coaches, the individual players who put the hit on me, the team and the ownership.

Didn't stop them from taking a 1st rounder from the Pats over Spygate. The Saints are going to get hit hard over this and there's a real chance you see some high profile resignations or firings over this.

Other than potential violation of the salary rules me either. You hear players talk about how they want to knock other teams guys out of the game all the time.

My question is why is there no fear of retaliation by the offense keeping these things under control? I know in baseball you take a cheap shot and the next time you come to bat you take a seat in the dirt. Helps cut down on dirty play.

Sorry but I dont get how that makes it more of an issue to the union. Surely the union would have been far more angry about a possible loss of draft picks (which would hurt the people they represent) for something that the players had nothing to do with, Spygate, over something the players were very much involved with, Bountygate.

In other words they would have had more of an issue with Spygate since the people they represented had nothing to do with it yet they were being punished for it and the union wasnt able to stop that punishment so what would make them think they can this time?

The Washington Post also reporting that such a bounty programme was in place from 2004-07 when Gregg Williams was the DC there. I dont see how the NFL can do anything else but institute a very lengthy ban on Williams.
