So for the money they are giving him this year and next the Cardinals could have just wrapped it into guaranteed money and had him here long term

I notice teams aren't using the transition tag anymore since the Steve Hutchinson and Nate Burleson fiascos. BTW, for those arm chair GMs at home, the cap room just went from 41 million to 32 million (unless they can come to a long term deal which I doubt).

Excellent decision at this point in time. We NEED him going forward. Yes, a deal should have been done last year. Yes, we screwed ourselves by guaranteeing two years of giant money. Doesn't change the fact that we need him, and if he hit the FA market he'd be gone. Plus, we still may be able to work out a long-term deal.

What's this do to the cap, Joe?

Yup, this is exactly right. Pretty bad mis management of the cap.

Calvin Pace got 6 years 42 million with 22 million guaranteed. They are just basically renting Dansby at this point

Does this no longer mean the Cardinals can sign him to a long-term contract?

I still worry that Graves is not the one for our GM job. Dansby was asking a little more then the Pace deal so why did we have to tag him. Just give the guy the money and make him a cornerstone of our LB unit for the next 5 years.

Honestly I'm not sure about these contracts, but doesn't this show that ownership is behind him and has confidence in him the next few years? A contract that length would as well tho.

I just wish more would get done and quickly. Graves has had two weeks and I realize he is a slow mover, but we need to re-sign Warner, Berry, and at least make a offer to A Smith.

Agreed, but no real reason to rush things. The offseason has just started and the combines to look forward to in just a few days. ;)

I must be the only one seeing this as a VERY negative thing. At the least either Warner or Dansby should have been done before free agency begins. It is begining to smell like desperation. This move stinks of a front office that may let one too many chances slip past them and set the team back 3-4 years. Pay both men their money, sooner as opposed to later please.

this just buys time. We all know Graves moves at a snails pace so we shouldn't be surprised. The only bad thing is this eats up about 10 mil in cap space. But there is still plenty of room.

Webetter sign him to a long term deal because we just threw 20 mil guarantee at him if we dont. Hes a great player and we need to pay up. We need him especially in a 3-4

The tag will cost the Cardinals 9.6 million next year. Cheaper than the 12+ he is looking for. This buys the Cards time in getting him signed long term, now get it done. I was really hoping they could sign him and not put the franchise tag on him, showing we were not going to be cheap anymore! But this contract is probably going to take some time to work out, thus the tag.

Agreed. It would be optimal to have gotten this deal done already. But the Cardinals are far from the first team to do this. The Cardinals have bought themselves some negotiation time. I would be very surprise to not see Dansby get signed to something long term.

Once again why rush the situation?

Karlos Dansby and Kurt Warner are the two most important players to retain, and there negotiation will take a long time to get done.

This gives us more time to deal with Dansby, and as for Kurt, we don't even know if he wants to play again next year.

HOPEFULLY, this frees up Graves to get some other deals done. It is the "other" free agents that the Cardinals have that scare me.

Even though I am labeled as a Graves lover, I still question his ability to get deals done with some competitive speed, in relations getting deals done.

Nope, I agree with you somewhat. At first when I saw this I was royally pissed, but now not so much. Dansby will never sign a longterm deal here IMO because he wants too much money. I guess the Cards know this and maybe just want to hold onto him for one more year while they make their final run at a championship with Kurt before Matt takes over. This could be a sign that they will wait another year to move Q too, though I hope not. Either way, Graves is still to slow for me. This board can praise his drafts all they like but he is beyond horrible at just about everything else. Looks like nidan will be banning me for yet another offseason because I still refuse to worship this sorry excuse for a GM.

So if everyone else jumps off the bridge we should too?:D C'mon boss just cause other teams manage things badly doesn't give us an excuse to.

Because time is money and we need to get moving here. The offseason doesn't wait for us.

Kurt will play next year, count on that. The only thing that could stop him is if Graves cant even get a deal together by then which is entirely possible IMO.:bang:

They have 11 days to get Warner re-signed.

Hopefully they are only using this franchise tag on Dansby to extend the time period of getting Dansby done long term. And by extend I mean a 1 week extension from the 19th(deadline for tagging guys) to the 27th (free agency starts), which means get a deal done before free agency starts.

Actually, Warner has 11 days to give the Cardinals his decision about playing next year, and beyond. I fully think the Cards have an offer ready to go for Kurt, they are just waiting for him and God to make up their minds.
