Seattle and San Fran with the two biggest reaches of the night. Irvin and Jenkins both have a lot of speed, but I'm not sure I saw a single mock ever that had either guy in the first round.

49ers selected Illinois WR A.J. Jenkins with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2012 draft.

A surprising pick in the first round, A.J. Jenkins was extremely productive during his senior season with 1,276 receiving yards on 90 catches. Most of all, Jenkins flashed 4.39 speed at the Combine after performing well at both the East-West Shrine Game and Senior Bowl. Jenkins has tremendous positional versatility, lining up outside or in the slot with excellent body control to make difficult catches. He needs to refine his routes while working back towards his quarterback, but Jenkins is a reliable target on intermediate patterns and vertically.

He is pretty good. As far as it being a reach, I'm not sure of that. He obviously wasn't making it to their next pick and rather than trade back with several teams needing WR coming up, they moved on him. No problem with them taking him.

.?? According to Kiper and John Clayton this was a huge reach. Apparently had a 3rd round grade by many.

The same people who have Stephen Hill graded higher than him because of Hill's combine?

I get he was drafted in the first round, and most expected he would be a 2nd round pick at best. However, he can play all three wide receiver positions, brings a big play element, and has decent college production. How is that any different from Ruben Randle or Stephen Hill, both guys who these people have rated as late 1st and early 2nd round picks?

AJ Jenkins 6'1" 190
2011: 90 1276 8
2010: 56 746 7
2009: 10 123 1
2008: 11 287 3

Ruben Randle 6'4" 208
2011: 53 917 8
2010: 33 544 3
2009: 11 173 2

Stephen Hill 6'5" 206
2011: 28 820 5
2010: 15 291 3
2009: 6 137 1

Stats aren't the end all be all, but there isn't that much of a difference to believe the 49ers and some other teams had Jenkins rated higher.

It's almost like they were using their 2011 draft cards and saw a WR named AJ and thought it would be a good pick.

I remember thinking both Seattle and SF really reached last year as well, but those seemed to work out pretty well.

Jenkins really onlyhad 2 really good games once he hit the Big 10 schedule and that was against, by far, the 2 worst defenses in Indiana and Northwestern. After those first 2 big 10 games he only averaged over 11.5 ypc once, no TD's, and only went over 100 yards once. And that was against probably the 3rd worst defense in Michigan.

The good thing is he had bad QB play at Illinois so he should be used to it and be ok with the type of QB play supplied by Alex Smith.
