Should Ayton be Traded?

Should the Suns trade Ayton?

  • Yes, trade him ASAP

  • Maybe, depends on who is hired as coach

  • No, let's see what he can do without Monty

Chris Paul got a legacy vote, basically. He was #29 on the guard list and #69 on overall, although he was tied with Austin Reaves on both. I think that's quite generous considering every team in the league has no less than 1 starter better than him at this point but I'd say every team has no less 2 guys better than him. He fell off quick. He was a top 50 player 2 years ago but I find it hard to list him in the top 90-100 now. He might prove to be that if he can accept a Sixth Man role though. He could be excellent if he buys in but I'm not sure the Warriors are the best team for him.

If you're a team that doesn't mind playing slow, then Paul is still a really good player, health problems aside. I don't see how he is going to fit with the Warriors through.

DA's terrible play parlayed Jock into getting minutes and a decent contract - i can see where he would appreciate that

That video is from the Denver series last year. Between games 3 and 4. So while your point is relevant, Jock hadn't got paid yet.

You're correct about the timing but I don't think his point is all that relevant. Jock saw him every day, was far closer to the situation than any of us, and said this about him. To me, it doesn't mean everything but it certainly means something. It raised my appreciation of Ayton's past and hope for his future a little bit. Not a whole lot, it doesn't wipe out what I've seen but it did make me question some of the conclusions I'd reached about DA.

Ayton was ranked #14 by Bleacher Report's best bigs for the 23-24 season preview. Perhaps lower than some would like. I think that's fair considering it's not just Centers listed and overall impact is taken into account.

He ranked #54 overall in their top 100.

Top 100

That's a fair ranking for him after last season.

Jock's comments told me there is more to the story. He saw Deandre's effort every day. I think much of the criticism he receives is because of where he was drafted. Hopefully, Frank Vogel brings out the best in him.

Nobody wants Ayton with the contract he has - including the Phoenix Suns
I think you're mistaken. I think a bunch of teams would love to have him at his salary. It's possible they'd change their minds after a year or two of DA but they'd jump at the chance to get a talented young big man who "appears" to have the right attitude. There probably aren't many suitors out there that would want him if they also had to include decent players and picks but that's a different story.

We would've given him away for draft picks

If the Suns received first round draft picks for Ayton in trade, I wouldn't call that giving him away.

The Suns already have three well paid stars on their team. Also, the new CBA has a huge impact on Ayton's value because of his large salary.

Maybe but we wouldn't have simply given him away even if the rules allowed it. I don't know if we would have done it for just draft picks but his value around the league still exceeds his contract even if many of us feel he fails to live up to it. He's big, he's healthy, he has a positive attitude and he's young. But I suspect that one of our concerns with DA's value, is that having just turned 25, his potential isn't going to be a deal sweetener much longer.

Ayton's contract is going to look economical in two years

He's big. He's healthy. He's young. HE DOES NOT HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

Sure, he'll get you 18 and 10, but not on the nights that matter. Not in the series that matter. Because that's when his positive attitude gives way to the incredible shrinking man - with symptoms including deafness and the inability to speak

When they rank him at #14 it isn't a testament to his basketball skills or positive attitude - it's an indictment of the current talent pool in the NBA as far as bigs go

I'm still trying to chill on the Ayton bashing but it's hard when the conversations are so cyclical - lest we forget what happens in the playoffs every year - Ayton is more of a burden than a viable big

It's going to be interesting how the new CBA balances out with increased television revenue. Also, after two more seasons, Ayton will become an expiring contract. That should hold value by itself.

This upcoming season will likely tell the tale on Deandre Ayton. The Suns need a starting center if they are to contend for a championship. Let's see if Frank Vogel has the key.

My guess, Ayton could do more if less was asked of him.

No it won't. The cap is being smoothed with new TV money so we won't see a huge spike like years back. Plus Ayton only has 3 full seasons left on his deal. It may be movable as an expiring but all expiring deals are movable, see CP3 & Russ. That neglects 75% of the deal where he's overpaid as well.

Listening to some podcasts only confirmed that Monty and CP3 wore thin on the team, primarily on Ayton. I expect better from him this year, the excuses are exhausted.

Our head coach really wants him and he is part of the Phoenix Suns. Indiana really wanted him. Miami was constantly in the rumor mill but they didn't have the assets. There is always someone who will take him. Someone will think they can do better coaching or there is the fact it will be a valued expiring.

There is a lot of speculation and I'm sure some of it is true but I'd like to read it from a source that is willing to go on record.
