I keep trying to think they are one bold move away from being a world series contender but in reality are they better off trading guys like Pollock, Jay, Corbin and maybe even Goldy for a rebuild?

I wish. We will finish 4th in front of San Diego. I hate saying that as I think in my heart they will win the division but my head tells me otherwise.

Pollack, Goldy (makes me sad to write), Greinke, and Corbin should all be on the block.

I doubt ARZ gets into the playoffs with this pitching staff. Ray, Godley & #5 by committee are taking ARZ out of the playoff race.

Everybody was worried about the offense trying to land Machado but Hazen saw the writing on the wall about SP being a bigger need.

Corbin and Pollock should be 100% traded. If they can move Greinke without eating more than 30-35 mil they should do it. If he were a FA this winter he’d command something close to what Arrieta got; 3/75... Greinke has 3/104 remaining after this year not counting the deferred payments.

I advocated a sell off last year and even more so the year before that.

Naturally, I'm going to take the opposite now and say that AZ needs to be all in this year to add as much short term talent as it can.

We've squandered much of our ability to restock our farm with the value of the MLB roster by waiting to see and being buyers the past couple of years.

Now we have a bunch of guys at the end of their contracts or end of arbitration years. There isn't much value in those players anymore and so why not just go all in for the playoffs?

If we're not in a wildcard spot or within a game or two, conduct a fire sale.

they're going to be really bad next year with all of the talent they are going to lose to FA in the offseason. they basically either need to go all in or trade off. the current plan of "seeing where we are in september" isn't going to pay off except missing the wild card game. jump start the rebuild or bring in a piece or 2 that will help contend.

There just isn't much available though... Unless we are actually ready to cough up Greinke, Corbin, Ray, AJ or and/or Goldy, which if we do, how would we be better off?
As painful as it is, and if the team/we are at all concerned about what 2019/2020/2021 and beyond might look like, I think we need to be sellers...
Specifically, Corbin has to be considered gone in 2019. If we don't trade him now, he will play out this season and then walk as he's an UFA. The Yankees will back up the Brinks Truck at Corbin's home...
Same situation with Pollack as he too is an UFA...
Ray is Arb eligible in '19 and 20 and becomes an UFA in 2021. Some other true contender must see value in grabbing a guy who would still have 2 years left before becoming an UFA...
Lamb is identical to Ray... though, not sure what we can get in return for Lamb...probably not much at all.
Peralta is again, identical to Ray and Lamb. Gotta believe Peralta could bring solid value in return!

I wouldn't touch Goldy and Archie. I know some will differ, but I really see those two as franchise cornerstones...I believe Goldy will settle for a very reasonable extension so we wouldn't have t break the bank to keep him.
As for Archie... I love the guy. But dammit he HAS to develop a quality 3rd pitch, preferably a hard slider! But even a cutter or a really good change-up would do...

Good to see Greinkie and Corbin increasing their trade values.

Win this series and we have Greinke/Corbin going at San Diego. Win both series and I’ll buy into going after another piece.

I don't know that I've ever seen a team as sellers when they're only a game out of the playoffs.

That's the thing.

Sure if you're a student of the game you know the long term consequences of not selling at this point but its a hard sell to your average season ticket holder to throw in the towel when you're a game out.

Yep, might as well shut this thread down. Like it or not the Dbacks are buyers.
I like the fact that we are not throwing in the towel. But I am concerned about the Dodgers doing what they did in the second half last year and us giving prospects when the is our weak link. it could kills us for the future. Or we could win the World Series this year, who knows?

It's not just the prospects the Dbacks are giving away to get these rentals. Its also all the prospects they could have got by selling off AJ and Corbin etc...

You're talking about 12-15 legit prospects that could have started the rebuild. The Marlins were masters of this for a while.

Good point, that is the best way for a small market team to compete against the big $ teams.

If Escobar isn’t signed to a long term deal, I am going to have no other choice but to begin to question what Hazen is really up to... I’ve been more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on a number of decisions. But now, knowing that AJ and Corbin will walk away with the team getting ZERO, literally nothing in return - he has to lock up Escobar!
