I advocated a sell off last year and even more so the year before that.
Naturally, I'm going to take the opposite now and say that AZ needs to be all in this year to add as much short term talent as it can.
We've squandered much of our ability to restock our farm with the value of the MLB roster by waiting to see and being buyers the past couple of years.
Now we have a bunch of guys at the end of their contracts or end of arbitration years. There isn't much value in those players anymore and so why not just go all in for the playoffs?
There just isn't much available though... Unless we are actually ready to cough up Greinke, Corbin, Ray, AJ or and/or Goldy, which if we do, how would we be better off?
As painful as it is, and if the team/we are at all concerned about what 2019/2020/2021 and beyond might look like, I think we need to be sellers...
Specifically, Corbin has to be considered gone in 2019. If we don't trade him now, he will play out this season and then walk as he's an UFA. The Yankees will back up the Brinks Truck at Corbin's home...
Same situation with Pollack as he too is an UFA...
Ray is Arb eligible in '19 and 20 and becomes an UFA in 2021. Some other true contender must see value in grabbing a guy who would still have 2 years left before becoming an UFA...
Lamb is identical to Ray... though, not sure what we can get in return for Lamb...probably not much at all.
Peralta is again, identical to Ray and Lamb. Gotta believe Peralta could bring solid value in return!
I wouldn't touch Goldy and Archie. I know some will differ, but I really see those two as franchise cornerstones...I believe Goldy will settle for a very reasonable extension so we wouldn't have t break the bank to keep him.
As for Archie... I love the guy. But dammit he HAS to develop a quality 3rd pitch, preferably a hard slider! But even a cutter or a really good change-up would do...
