Just cut by the Titans.

No, we don't need him. But it's not like we're hurting for cap space and this is the best available defensive free agent in about the last 3 months. Probably won't cost much either, and we've got money to burn.

Any idea if the guy has any character issues that could ruin team chemistry. I doubt we will be signing anyone with these issues no matter how good they are.....case in point D Boston.... good player, but on the field & off the field issues...... I don't see us jumping at these guys just because we have money to spend, it sends the wrong message to the current players.....

Agreed - this would be a good signing for the Cards - and it is not like this is would stop us from signing anyone else!

Is he healthy??
He missed two starts in five years, then takes five months to come back from his second knee surgery, then is plagued by a sprained ankle all season last year. As of this last February they were still discussing surgery for it.

He was supposed to count almost 8M against the cap.

He is a bit on the smallish size, but what about having him play DE on passing downs? Would that work?

Also, Isn't he an MLB? Even though he is an upgrade athletically (assuming his injury isn't an issue) how does that effect the coached liking McKinnon and Darling?

Didn't find anything much related to character issues, so who knows, of course he used to be a Cowboy and we know what solid citizens alot of them have been......So questionable to say the least.... If he's healthy & there are no character issues I could see adding him....

"In a move that has been rumored for more than a month, the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday released seven-year veteran middle linebacker Randall Godfrey, making him an unrestricted free agent who figures to draw quick interest from other franchises.

The move was primarily a salary cap maneuver, aimed at creating room for the Titans to be able to afford to resign a trio of unrestricted free agents: punter Craig Hentrich, center Gennaro DiNapoli and backup quarterback Neil O'Donnell.

Tennessee officials have been close to deals with all three, and are believed to essentially have agreements in principle with DiNapoli and Hentrich, but did not have the cap room to complete the contracts. The cap-strapped Titans were only $904,000 under the league spending limit of $75.1 million on Wednesday morning.

Club officials are all but certain to consummate speedy deals with all three players. The coaching staff, and Titans management, would like the players to be able to participate in some of the remaining organized offseason practice sessions.

"In essence," said general manager Floyd Reese, "we're trading one position (to fill) three positions."

Reese had recently acknowledged that a roster move would be soon made to clear up cap room. He allowed that he could make several moves, but preferred just one, to create more space. That concession fueled speculation that Godfrey would be released.

By releasing Godfrey, the Titans carved out roughly $2.005 million in cap room. The club will have to carry a charge of $3.58 million on its 2003 cap and $3.08 million on the 2004 cap. Godfrey's cap charge for 2003 was to have been $5.58 million and the veteran was to have earned a base salary of $2 million this season and $4.75 million in '04.

Earlier this spring, the Titans approached Godfrey about the possibility of restructuring his contract to provide the franchise cap relief, but the two sides were unable to come to an accommodation that fit their needs.

A trio of young veterans -- Frank Chamberlin, Rocky Calmus and Brad Kassell -- are now expected to compete for the starting middle linebacker spot. Chamberlin is a three-year vet and Calmus and Kassell are each in their second season.

Godfrey, 30, has suffered through injuries the past two seasons and he was limited to just eight appearances and five starts because of a severely sprained ankle. For his career, he has 752 tackles, 10 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, five interceptions and 19 passes defensed. But he had only 32 tackles in 2002 and, at a time when more teams are moving quicker players to the middle linebacker spot and trying to keep them on the field for all three downs, Godfrey is mostly regarded as a two-down run stuffer.

The former University of Georgia star began his career with the Dallas Cowboys as a second-round draft choice in 1996. He played his first four seasons with the Cowboys and then moved to Tennessee as an unrestricted free agent in 2000, signing a contract that included $5 million in upfront money.

I don't know if this would be a good signing. He's been hurt quite a bit the last 2 years, and he's basically a 2 down run stuffer as the article mentioned. If we signed him we may end up having to cut a younger player with more long term value. I don't see where he would be a major upgrade. It would be more a matter of making a change for the sake of change. Maybe Graves is interested, but I don't think we'll go after him. Either way, I'm not going to get too excited.

Here's his NFL.com bio:

http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/3508/bios

Pro Career
When the Dallas Cowboys drafted Randall Godfrey in 1996, they were looking for an aggressive linebacker that could provide depth in the linebacking corps and contribute on special teams. Godfrey provided more than depth as he earned the starting strongside linebacker job midway through his rookie season. With his ability to cover running backs and tight ends in pass patterns and fill rushing lanes, he has not relinquished the strongside spot since. Godfrey's physical and active style of play fits the Cowboys defensive scheme, and Dallas coaches keep raising the bar of expectations they have for him. He has started the last 38 straight games on the Dallas defense, and his experience, aggressiveness and athletic ability have made him a player who might be able to move into the middle linebacker spot on the Dallas defense.

1998
Godfrey started all 16 games at strongside linebacker and finished the season ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 115 stops. He led the team with three forced fumbles and led all linebackers in quarterback pressures with nine (fifth on the team). He also led all Dallas linebackers with a career-high three sacks (tied for fourth on the team). In the season opener against Arizona (9/6), Godfrey led the team with 11 tackles and added a pass defensed as the Cowboys limited the Cardinals to 45 yards rushing and 205 yards of total offense.

1997
Godfrey followed up a successful rookie season with an even better second year, recording 149 tackles (second on the team), seven tackles for losses (second on team), six quarterback pressures, two passes defensed and a sack. He led or tied for the team lead in tackles five times in 1997.

1996
Most of Godfrey's playing time during the first half of the season came with the Cowboys' special teams units...He recorded his first career special teams tackle against the N.Y. Giants (9/8).

College Highlights
Godfrey, a preseason All-America as a senior, missed four games with a severely pulled hamstring, but finished the season with 35 tackles, three tackles for losses and two passes defensed...As a junior, Godfrey finished second on the team with 102 tackles, two sacks, 10 tackles for losses, five passes defensed and a fumble recovery. He was selected to the All-Southeastern Conference third-team...As a first-team All-SEC choice as a sophomore, Godfrey led the Bulldogs with 114 tackles, four tackles for losses, a sack, a forced fumble and a pass deflection...Godfrey was named SEC Freshman of the Year, Freshman All-SEC and Freshman All-America in 1992 as he became the first true freshman in Georgia school history to lead the team in tackles (114)~ He also contributed a sack, three tackles for losses, a fumble recovery and three passes defensed.

Funny, no mention of his time in Tennessee?

As I said the first time around on this, IF (and I mean "IF", I don't think we'll try to get him, and if we did, I don't think we'd land him) we signed him, I believe we'd cut McKinnon. A roster with Godfrey, McKinnon and Darling makes little sense. McKinnon was already going out on third downs last year. Plus, I think he's not going to be an impact player on special teams at this point in his career either. So our LB's for sure to be on the roster would be imo:

Godfrey
Thompson
Fisher
Hayes
Darling

That'd leave McKinnon fighting for a spot against Burton, Woods, Young and Gilbert. I think they'll try to keep Gilbert, and one of the other three would be more important on special teams.

This year's Lindy's describes Godfrey's as "when healthy, one of the NFL's top MLB's.

If, in fact, he can pass a physical and is considered a "good guy" off the field and in the lockerroom, I think we should make a run at him.

The precedent for this would be our logjam at wide receiver - the feeling being: "bring 'em all in and may the best 5 or 6 prevail."

Darling is considered a valuable backup LB by many observers and also a possible candidate to replace Fredrickson.

And if our new one-gap scheme will de-emphasize "protecting our LB's", McKinnon may get pushed around back there. If Godfrey can play stouter than Ronnie-Mac, we oughta bring him in.

Note - Our rookies (Hayes and Gilbert) could provide depth behind McKinnon, but most likely would represent a longer run answer and not an immediate remedy (and Hayes is listed as weighing less than 240 anyway). If healthy (in mind and in body), Godfrey could come in and help us right away in Mac's final contract year.

Blasphemy!

If Godfrey is not an @ss. Then sign him. We then have him and McKinnon (I hate saying this cause I think McKinnon is one of our troopers, been here doing a great job for a long time) as trade bait.

But I don't know anything about Godfrey. Accept he had an AWESOME year 2 years ago.

Peace

The point is to put the best players on the field...

Godfrey, would be a starter at LB for us no doubt about it...

You cant worrie about a rookie not getting playing time. Sign him up, we have the cap space!

Our defense WILL be improved with Godfrey, the more proven veterans we can get the better...

Somebody explain to me why the Cardinals would want to sign an aging veteran LB, with a recent history of injuries, who typically comes out on third down. Particularly, when this is a position of relative strength/ depth for this team.

Even if the Cards *do* have money to spend, there are better places to spend it. Like, for instance, making a serious run at O'Donnell before the Titans sign him with the cap money they've just freed up.

I was reading about team salaries today and was very supprised to see the Cards right in the middle of the pack. I thought they would have been down near the bottom.

Godfrey is in his 8th year - That would peg him under 30 years of age. I wouldn't consider that "aging."

With regard to coming out on passing downs - just curious, but how many NFL teams leave their MLB's in on passing and how many of them go into some sort of nickel or dime packages?

O'Donnell is signing with the Titans - he has just been waiting for the Titans to clear up cap space to sign him and P Craig Hentrich.

You wanna upgrade or stay in mediocridy forever? The only way the get better isto upgrade when ever you can...

Were the Cardinals remember, when did we become a team that can be picky?
