On Rotoworld from the East Valley Tribune:

Mark Jackson --former front-runner to become the Knicks new head coach-- will reportedly be one of the first people interviewed for the Suns head coaching job.

Other candidates include Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw (L.A.), Tom Thibodeau (Boston), Paul Westphal (Dallas) and ex-Suns Jeff Hornacek and Tyron Corbin. Paul Silas is expected to fill an assistant coaching role, focusing on developing the Suns big men.

This sounds rather matter-of-fact, but if the Silas hiring is that clearcut, I think it's a terrific move. It also suggests that Kerr may be looking at a more inexperienced head coach--say Mark Jackson or Tom Thibadeau.

Very odd that you'd hire an assistant before a head coach (what, they get no say?)

BUT...I freaking love Silas. Crap, Silas and Shaq on the same team....the quote machine will be smokin'.

I love him too. Wonder why he doesn't want to coach the team...

I'd love to see them hire Hornacek with Silas as assistants and add a keen, innovative guy like Thibodeau.

why would horny excite you? seems to me he's westy part deux. a player with great name appeal for the suns faithful that hasn't cut his teeth or shown the chops to be a topflight coach. and no way that a thibodeau would come to work for a neophyte coach like horny at this stage in his career.

I would like to get Thibo as an asst too, but it won't happen. If he leaves Boston, it won't be for an assistant job.

You're right about Hornacek probably not being ready for a HC position but I would love to see him as an assistant. I'm not sure but I think he worked with shooters at Utah. When Hornacek was drafted by Phoenix he couldn't shoot a lick. He learned the right form and became a nice shooter. Perhaps he could help some of the young players develop shooting skills like Strawberry and Tucker. Also Hornacek had good ball handling/PG skills that he might help transfer. Needless to say, Hornacek was not overly athletic so he had to be a heady player like Nash.

I met him once and he was a class person just like he was on the court. Hornacek should come on board with Phoenix in some capacity. He could only help the Suns.

Word was that Silas was really anxious to get the Bobcat job. Since Larry Brown never stays anywhere for more than a couple of years, this would keep keep Silas in the mix when Larry leaves. Paul does not fit the suns profile of wanting an offense oriented, up tempo guy, but he'd be an extraordinary signing.

I believe Hornacek has been a shooting coach for the Jazz ever since he retired. That's a pretty long time.

yeah, but apparently not a fulltime coach. just a part-time "special" shooter coach. i don't know how that prepares one for the head job.

I tend to agree. But if Mark Jackson and Eddie Johnson can be considered viable candidates, why not Hornacek?

I'd rather see Hornacek with Silas as an assistant. It's a big jump in commitment, expertise and a whole lot more from "special" assistant coach to head coach. Don't know a lot about Thibodeau but he sure gets great press. With Silas' expertise in tow in might be a great combination.
