As was said, they've worked on that problem. But if you want to hang your hat on 71% and lukewarm, apologetic positive reviews, that tells the story too. The 'fresh' reviews all said stuff like, "if you check your expectations at the door" and "mindless" and the like as well. Yikes!

Yeah. It’s interesting coming after The Last Jedi. This movie does nothing to advance the mythology, but it also does not fundamentally change a beloved character.

People offended by Luke’s dark turn will have nothing to complain about in this one because it will challenge “their childhood” in absolutely no way.

It’s better that the prequels, I guess, but I prefer Rian Johnson’s approach to Ron Howard’s.

Still more Star Wars stories are always welcome in my house. I can’t get enough of my favorite universe.

I think there is a lot of good in this movie and not a lot of bad, but you have to go into it knowing that it isn’t a part of the overall mythology. It’s more nostalgia than anything and a lot of callbacks to canon that many thought was actually no longer canon.

Many of the recent Star Wars movies had no space battles to speak of at all, so I actually liked them in this movie. I was especially fanboy giddy when they basically played the score to Empire during an entire space battle/Chase.

The movie is actually IMO what you would expect from a Ron Howard film. Not the best, but crowd-pleasing and enjoyable.

EDIT: Oh, and the acting was fine. Ehrenrich was adequate, probably better than Ingruber would have been.

Going to see his tomorrow. Not sure what you mean by it’s not part of the mythology since it’s the same continuity. Do you mean separate front the main saga?

Also, not sure you can call this a Ron Howard film.

So where does this rank in your opinion in terms of the recent releases?

It IS a Ron Howard film. He didn't shoot 100% of it, but he did shoot most of it and edit all of it. And as you know, editing is pretty important.

I did mean main saga, yes.

this character has been fully developed for forty years....all they could do is tell the stories.

Wasn't referring to Han Solo specifically, but a casual fan like me doesn't necessarily know his 40yr history. Who was that female android? Who was Han's girlfriend? Was it me, or did she mumble a lot? Couldn't make out half of her dialogue, lol.

Just got back. The movie was alot of fun but I stand by my original thought. It was sort of unnecessary. There really was no reveals about Han's backstory that I didn't really already have an idea about.

The acting was fine. Glover nailed Lando. I mean so much so it almost makes me want a sequel just to see the two of them team up again. I really enjoyed some of the characters. More so, I want to know more about the Wookies post Star Wars Revenge of the Sith.

In terms of that cameo? I guess it wasn't a shocker for me. I could see why it would be for the casual fan but those of us that have followed current canon it really wasn't. It was cool but not shocking.

Star Wars Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels are established canon. We already knew what happened to Darth Maul. It's one of the few things they didn't throw out of canon when they jettisoned the EU. This just connected the dots even further (a la Rogue One with the Ghost/characters from Rebels) between SWCW and SWR [Spoiler/]

If Han Solo is in his 20s before Darth Maul dies then he’s about 70 in episode 4 and 100 when he’s killed by his son?

When Darth Maul is killed Annikin is 5 years old.

Your timeline is wrong because in the animated Star Wars series, they "corrected" the event in Episode 1 you are talking about.

They brought Darth Maul back to life.

I didn't know that either until the guy I saw it with told me.

Disagree.

Even Woody and Donald Glover brought next to nothing to the table.

Interesting. I found it to be the polar opposite. Donald Glover was great.

I have not decided where this falls but it was much more fun than TLJ.

P.S. Chap, it’s Star Wars so I will watch it regardless.

P.S.S. The character in question never died. It only appeared that way.

Even though I was pretty mixed on TLJ, that movie blew this one away with the force of a nuclear bomb. At least that movie took risks, had interesting character turns, some kick ass set pieces. This movie was as paint by numbers as it gets.

P.S.S. Whatever happened in the cartoons to bring that character back to life is called “retconning” and lame, IMO.

Which is interesting because half of my die hard Star Wars loving friends absolutely hated TLJ yet not one of them hated this film. Sure some echoed what I did in that the movie felt unnecessary but none of them hated it. Also, RJ doesn't get any credit for me taking risks for the sake of taking risks. He completely obliterated the most talked about aspect of TFA. Wasted a character, RETCONNED Luke as far as I am concerned (that was not Luke).

In terms of retconning that character for this movie? Well Lucas screwed up with that character to begin with so as far as I concerned it was a course correction. Something I hope Abrams does in spades in terms of TLJ.

On that topic though, I don't see how people can complain about that approach anyway since Lucas even during the original trilogy course corrected plenty (Luke/Leia relationship, Obi saying Luke's father was murdered by Vader in Star Wars, who was trained by Yoda but sort of fixed in the prequels, Leia's force powers not being sensed by Vader or the Emperor yet revealed in ROTJ).

None of that stuff bothers me because it's been present since the original trilogy.

There’s nothing to hate in this movie because everything played out exactly the way anyone expected. No risk, no fuss, but no reward, IMO.

That’s fair but having said that almost all of them described it as fun to me. I agree with a couple of my friends assessments that this felt more like a chapter in “Han Solo Adventures” verses a full blown stand alone movie. That’s a great way to describe it for me as well.

Finally got to see this last night. Went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I hated TLJ and was very disappointed when I saw it. I found Solo to be much more enjoyable. I'd call it middle of the pack as far as Star Wars movies go.

For me I had no problems with the actors. Felt they did a good job of capturing the overall characters. Hans girlfriend had me scratching my head for a while as I couldn't figure out how I knew her. Then I realized that she was Dani from GOT.

To rank my favorite Star Wars films:

  1. Empire
  2. Return of the Jedi
  3. TFA
  4. New Hope
  5. Rouge One
  6. Solo
  7. Revenge
  8. TLJ
  9. Clones
  10. Phantom

#2 and #5? Also, defeats the purpose until we know where you rank SOLO in the Solo thread. :)
