Gwen is pivotal in Spider-Man lore as Peter's high school crush, his first girlfriend and his first love. She ended up being kidnapped by the Green Goblin and died during a bridgetop battle in "Amazing Spider-Man" issue 121.

Columbia is keeping a tight lid on the third movie's story line, though it is known that Gwen is the third part of a love triangle that includes Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson.
Huh? Wasn't Peter in love with Mary Jane while they were in high school in the first Spiderman? Does the story really need another Peter Parker love interest?

Gwen Stacy was the first love interest. Then she died (killed by the Green Goblin in a scene that was sorta re-enacted in SM1).

Yes, Felicia Hardy aka the Black Cat to make things really interesting

I keep wondering when they are going to put her in the storyline. She was supposed to be in part 2 originally.

I thought Topher Grace signed on to be Venom...

Maybe they saw his cameo in Oceans 12 and took it back

Theresa Russell Joins Spider-Man 3
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
January 24, 2006

One-time "Black Widow" star Theresa Russell has become ensnared in Spidey's web. The actress has joined the cast of Spider-Man 3 for Columbia Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Russell will play Mrs. Marko, the wife of Flint Marko, aka the Sandman (Thomas Haden Church). Plot details from Alvin Sargent's screenplay are scarce, though the trade says it is known that the villainous couple has a daughter.

James Cromwell Joins Spider-Man 3
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
February 5, 2006

James Cromwell has joined the cast of Columbia Pictures' Spider-Man 3 as Captain Stacy, the father of Bryce Dallas Howard's character, Gwen.

In the "Amazing Spider-Man" comic books, Stacy dies a heroic death as he saves a child during a battle between Spider-Man and another supervillain. Peter Parker love interest Gwen Stacy (Howard) ends up blaming Spider-Man for her father's death.

Cromwell joins returning cast members Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco as well as Topher Grace, Thomas Haden Church and Theresa Russell. Sam Raimi is directing.

Cromwell is best known for starring in the "Babe" movies, the first of which earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor, and as a villain in L.A. Confidential. His recent role on Six Feet Under earned him an Emmy mention in 2003.

--------------------------------------------------------

I really wish they had stayed true to the comics from the beginning. They could have had Peter and Gwen, the Goblin storyline, then Peter and MJ, etc. Seems strange that they're going back and adding these characters in out of place.

If I remember my Spiderman history correctly.....

He got the suit while fighting secret wars on another planet. He came across the costume/ symbiote, and found that it had an endless supply of webbing, so he took it back to Earth with him.

The costume was trying to permantly graft(??) itself to Peter, so he removed it with sonic waves.

The suit joins up with whatever the prisoner's name (Eddie Brock??) to become Venom. They both share an equal hatred for Spiderman/Peter Parker.
Later a part of that suit spins off and forms up with a mass murderer to become Carnage.

I noticed the last movie poster has "reflections" of certain scenes through the mask's eyes - I don't see any on this one.

But I figured to post a pic of a close up to see if anyone else might notice anything.

Avi Arad on the Spider-Man 3 Effects
Source: Mercury News
March 13, 2006

Marvel Studios' Avi Arad appeared at San Jose's Cinequest and talked about the Spider-Man 3 visual effects, says Mercury News:

He boasted that director Sam Raimi would be using innovative tech in "Spider-Man 3" to bring to life one of the villians, Sandman. "It's all new technology. It's like nothing you've ever seen before," he said, comparing it to the breakthrough CGI effects used in "Jurassic Park" and "The Perfect Storm."

Official Spider-Man 3 Site
Source: Sony Pictures
April 7, 2006

Sony Pictures has launched the official website for Spider-Man 3, in theaters on May 4, 2007.

http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/spiderman3/site/

There, you'll find a new Flash animation of Spidey in the black suit with rain falling (even water pooling up and dripping off his costume), and you can download a screensaver and wallpaper.

Also, who is taking pictures of Spidey? Why is it raining? Why does Spidey look so downtrodden? What is in the reflection in his eye?

I understand the other questions, but why ask this one? :doi:

Church on Sandman and Confirms Venom
Source: MSN Movies
April 11, 2006

MSN Movies chatted with Thomas Haden Church about playing Sandman in Spider-Man 3, an interview in which he talked about the story and confirmed Venom is in the film:

"[Director Sam Raimi] and I started having really involved sessions about who the guy was," Church says. "Clearly, it's taken from the fourth issue of 'Spider-Man,' which was when Sandman was introduced and which I now have framed on my wall."

Church is still sworn to secrecy regarding plot details (he might want to consider moonlighting as a CIA agent), but he wants to let fans know they won't be disappointed.

"I'm overwhelmed every time I'm around Sam," Church says. "He's been showing me [stuff] since the beginning of last summer. 'This is what we are going to be doing in this sequence, this is what Spider-Man is going to be doing and this is what Venom is going to be doing.' It is a massive, massive process."

From IMDB.com;

Escalating special effects costs have boosted the budget of Sony's Spider-Man 3, scheduled for release on May 4, 2007, to between $250 million and $300 million, the Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend, citing people close to the studio. The newspaper also said that at least three other films relying heavily on special effects will see their budgets exceed $200 million. They include 20th Century Fox's X-Men sequel ($210 million), Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($225 million) and Warner Bros.' Superman Returns ($261 million). Commented the Journal: "The price tags underscore that effects, not stars, sell big movies these days." It also noted that the skyrocketing costs have result in increased tensions between the studios, trying to keep costs down, and the effects houses.

Four Spider-Man 3 Villains
Source: websguy
June 1, 2006

http://www.ifmagazine.com/new.asp?article=3028

Former Marvel Studios CEO Avi Arad may have let a big one out of the bag when talking to IFMagazine.com. He says there are four villains in Spider-Man 3!

iF: There are four villains this time, Venom, Sandman, and Green Goblin and when is the fourth going to be revealed?

ARAD: Right we have four villains. Pretty soon [we'll reveal the fourth villain] I believe. Maybe around Comic Con we'll reveal something and the madness will begin.
