...Here's a question - if it's not a clone storyline or just a different character completely, and he is going to replace Maguire - how would they pull that off?

Here's one plot direction (wild guess):

A clone is made in the movie - they fight - one dies in the explosion caused by bad guy - cliff hanger till the 4th to see who the next spiderman is...who gets on with his life marrying mary jane and battling venom, carnage, etc...

Yup, the Scarlet Spider. The only one of the clone stories that was actually pretty damn good IMO.

It could actually be done well in the movie

oic...this movie is certainly getting built for some twists and turns.

He could be the Chameleon...

In his first appearance, the Chameleon went around committing crimes AS Spidey.

Even Marvel isn't dumb enough to revisit one of their (admitedly) darkest moments in the clone saga.

It's not worth even talking about. Ain't gonna happen.

Probably not but you never know. There are quite a few Spiderman fans (including me) that actually liked the Scarlet Spider storyline. Yes the rest of the clone stories were a train wreck (doppelganger, Kane ... :barf: )but the Scarlet storyline had plenty of good elements to it (and a few bad ones too).

In fact, the storyline has already been relived in the Fox Cartoon when it was still on the air. The final two episodes of the series was entitled "I really, really hate clones" and had you guessed it the Scarlet Spider involved.

Then again the majority of the comic book villains before they became "changed" were nerdy little guys that looked like Parker. For all we know he could be Quentin(sp?) Beck.

*** Comic Book spoilers****

Of course the one thing that they would have to do in the Scarlet Spider storyline is change it so that Green Goblin 2 kills Ben instead of his father because he's "dead". However thats shouldn't be a problem

An article on CNN says that Grace will play "one of two villains", but doesn't say which one.

That's interesting. We know Church is playing the Sandman, and it was presumed that the other Villain would be some incarnation of the Green Goblin (because of the ending in 2). So, I wonder if Franco isn't coming back and Grace is replacing him as Harry? Or if the Goblin won't be in this one, but rather will be further set up for a future film?

I think Raimi is going to do the Green Goblin 2 storyline like in the comics meaning Harry is going to be fighting his own sanity to decide whether or not to don the Green Goblin costume. In the comics he fights over it for quite a while.

Now the question is who would Grace play? Mysterio? Shocker? Electro? Hydroman (that would be an interesting combo ... maybe they'll make it like in the comics where they breifly combine to become Mudman)

Topher Grace Joins Cast of 'Spider-Man 3'
Friday, May 20, 2005

NEW YORK — Topher Grace, who starred in "That '70s Show," has joined the cast of "Spider-Man 3."

Although his character wasn't revealed, director Sam Raimi said Grace "will be perfect for the complexities of the role we are developing."

"Topher Grace is an extraordinarily talented actor," Raimi said in a statement Thursday. "I couldn't be more excited about the direction we are taking the continuing adventures of Peter Parker."

The 26-year-old actor will join franchise stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco. "Sideways" star Thomas Haden Church also has been announced as a cast member in the film, which is set for release in May 2007.

Shooting on "Spider-Man 3" is expected to begin next year.

Grace's screen credits include "In Good Company," "Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!" and "Mona Lisa Smile."

Topher Grace IS Venom...

FDM Exclusive: 'Spiderman 3' Villains Revealed!!
Posted by: vaporrub September 7th 11:56pm

Sony has been taunting us for quite sometime now and have only given us clues as to who we might see in Spiderman 3, which hits theaters May 4th, 2007. What we know is only that Thomas Haden Church, Topher Grace and James Franco will be in the film and that two out of the three of them are conformed villains. The truth can be found below and it's pretty black and white...

FDM has learned that Topher Grace of That 70s Show will play the immortal VENOM in Sam Raimi's third Spiderman adaptation. We told you guys a few months back that "someone" has snagged the rights to the character of Venom off of New Line Cinema and it was reported a few days ago that Grace had been "bulking up"- so we decided it was time to put the pressure on. So there you have it VENOM! Now as for the other two stars listed above we've been told that Thomas Haden Church will in fact play SANDMAN and that James Franco will play HOBGOBLIN and not the Green Goblin II (like in the comics). No more info can be given at this time, but I've confirmed this with various sources and apparently it's quite well known.

Freeze Dried Moves - Spider-Man 3 Casting Notes

Not sure if this is REALLY confirmed, since it's "learned" by this website, which as far as I can tell, isn't exactly Entertainment Tonight...

didn't toby beef up to play spiderman?

Yeah...and he does a decent job of portraying the comics... but while spiderman is supposed to look athletic (gymnists body)...venom is supposed to be body builder status...sorta like this dude:
