Saw it last night. So, so, so good! A major improvement on The Force Awakens! See it soon, because the minute I left the theater, I got an azcentral alert with "Five Spoilers from Star Wars". It will be impossible to escape them, I think, because there are several moments people will be talking about! My non-spoilery thoughts:
1. I think it has the best space battle in any Star Wars movie (maybe nothing as iconic as the Death Star trench run in the original, but certainly the best overall battle).
2. It has the best lightsaber fight since Darth Maul/Obi Wan/Qui Gon in Episode I. It combines the speed of that battle with the exhilaration of seeing Yoda become a whirling dervish for the first time in The Clone Wars.
3. I am now sold on the new heroes as the focal point of this series. You don't need Han/Luke/Leia to carry the load and make you care. Torch successfully passed.
4. I can't decide if I am convinced of Kylo Ren being a big galactic threat. He wants to be Vader, but when he takes off his mask, all I see is the guy from Girls. Even though he is a hell of an actor, the mere fact that he has facial expressions takes away some of his mystique. He is a good character, but the Vader comparisons from the outset may not have been fair. He could have been his own thing without that shadow hanging over him.
5. The holes in Episode VII are really obvious now that we have Episode VIII. By that, I mean, Rian Johnson is a better storyteller and director than JJ Abrams, and even though I can't wait to see Episode IX, I am more excited about Johnson's new trilogy, whatever it is.
6. Some of the reviews I read say the 2 hr, 30 minute run time drags in the middle. I never once felt this way until the very end. I thought the movie was winding down, to an Empire-like cliffhanger, but then when they start gearing up for the climax, I was like, "hell yeah! I don't have to wait two more years to see how this turns out!" In my opinion, it ends perfectly. Perfectly. Perfectly!!!
7. The Last Jedi and Rogue One does something very interesting. They stretch the boundaries of Star Wars films to show the horrors of war and the agonizing decisions that test characters' faith. I really like this trend in storytelling, because Lucas' Star Wars was very much about black-and-white, good-and-evil. Decisions were easy and obvious. Here? Not so much.
8. Theepio had a red arm in the last movie, with no explanation given. Now it is gold again. No explanation given.
9. It has a subversive sight gag, one of the funniest moments in the entire saga, IMO.

Spoiler Thoughts
1. I had 2 childhood heroes: Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. Into adulthood, there was some comfort knowing these characters had uncertain futures and they were still out there. Now they are both dead.
2. I have no idea how they wrap up Leia's storyline with Carrie Fisher passing away. My hope is that they use a hologram similar to "Help me Obi Wan Kenobi..." so show she is still out there briefly, leading the Resistance from some far away location, but they don't try to kill her off screen or use CGI to recreate her intended scenes a la Rogue One.
3. Yoda!!!!
4. Admiral Ackbar dies an undignified death. They simply mention in passing that he was one of the casualties. Bummer.
5. Allies heard their distress call but didn't come? Sounds very Lando-ish to me!
6. They show Yoda destroying the Jedi books, but in the end, doesn't it look like Rey had them stashed aboard the Falcon?
7. So Jedi can astral project now? And these projections can physically touch things, but also avoid being touched? More than that, they can project inanimate objects (dice) and hand them to someone else. Then that person can drop those dice, only for a third person to pick them up before they disappear. Huh? Also, how can Threepio see Luke? As a droid, he is not a living thing. How can the Force be used to make droids see things that aren't really there?
8. Rey's parents were nobody? They have no role in this story? Was that a lie? Based on the final scene, I don't think so.
9. Does Luke become a Force Ghost to help Rey complete her training? Does she rebuild his lightsaber or make her own? Maybe one that takes the shape of her fighting staff?
10. Snoke is dead? Kylo Ren is the new Supreme Leader? Is there any doubt the Skywalker line has to die out at the end of the next movie?
11. Leia is space was a low point, though. Not executed well, and in retrospect, with some creative editing, could have been a way to address Fisher's death.
12. We got complaints that Rey is a a Mary Sue, that she can do anything perfectly. I think that complaint is more apt to be leveled at BB-8. That droid has all the answers at exactly the right time, every time!

Finn: We know he was taken from his family by the First Order. Presumably he was born in First Order controlled space. This is likely also space that was extremely loyal to the Emperor. Perhaps his home world of Naboo? Maybe his great grandfather knew Palpatine personally?
Captain Panaka went from protecting Queen Amidala to becoming a staunch supporter of the Empire. He eventually became a Moff. Would his lineage find it an honor to breed worthy soldiers for the First Order?
What about General Hux? Could his ancestry be steeped in Imperial lore? Maybe he had a grandfather that served at Vader's side and actually had the guts to openly question a Sith Lord's plan? "She'll die before she tells you anything!"

Also, with Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox, can we get the John Williams opening fanfare restored to the new Star Wars movies?

You'll be happy to know that the 2.5 hour movie is not distilled down into that 2.5 minute trailer. That being said, in retrospect, it captures the tone of the overall movie perfectly without giving too much away. I feel that is a difficult feat to pull off. Mostly, I feel like it has to do with John Williams' score. He is certainly at the top of his game this time around.

They said no CGI, but I imagine they meant no Tarkin "Rogue One" CGI. But could they use CGI to recreate a Princess Leia hologram projection (blue and grainy), showing her leading the Resistance from afar while the action focuses intimately on the newer characters? A throwaway scene here or there to show she is still engaged, but not physically present? I don't understand why she has to die at all in the crawl or anywhere else. I am absolutely convinced they have to do massive rewrites because Episode IX was clearly going to be her movie, from all accounts, but in a galaxy-spanning war, why does she have to be fighting on the same front as Finn, Rey, and Poe?
Her death impacted this film and the next one and I already read that it changed the story for the last one because she was suppose to be a major part of the last story.

Yeah. If you can't replace the actress and you can't CGI her, and there will be hell to pay if she dies offscreen, I am glad I am not the one trying to balance respect for Leia and respect for Carrie.
If they can pull off changes to the story that deviate from the original plan and still satisfy fans, give the writers an Academy Award. I do not envy trying to come up with a satisfactory way of handling the situation.

Buckle up for this one. Keep a close eye on Luke in the 3rd act.
I'll just come out and say it. This is the best Star Wars movie... ever. Yes, Empire had the greatest movie twist ever, but take that away and it's not even close.
Some absolute mind-blowing visual scenes that will drop your jaw. One in particular everyone will talk about.
The slap-stick comedy was awesome.
Disney did a spectacular job with the marketing and trailers for this.
I walked out of the theater and walked right in to another and watched again to start connecting the dots.
It's very easy to see why Disney handed the keys to Johnson for the next trilogy.
And, I have absolutely no confidence in Abrams being able to wrap this trilogy up. This should have been the 3rd movie.
I'll wait until more people have seen it before digging into it, but I'll ask this question, was this a Star Wars movie? Sure the characters are there. The force is there and many other recognizable elements, but the story was very, very deep relative to any other Star Wars movie.
There's one line that Kylo says several times that leads me to ask this question.

The torch is passed and it's a very transitional movie. It's kind of sad for me. Those of us who grew up with this franchise as a kid, it's sad so see that torch pass with how this movie plays out.

I rewatched the original trilogy last week... its amazing how poor it looks when I remember being in such awe of it when it was new. The spectacle that ILM created was so mesmerizing at the time that the obvious flaws in the movies just didnt matter. Now that amazing FX are even commonplace on daily television viewing Star Wars in its original form is disappointing. There is no flow, it is just a collection of scenes...much like reading a picture book. Huge gaps in story and flow, so many things unexplained, and it was spectacular in its simplicity.
If Star Wars were made new today it would completely flop in theaters and may not even survive TV unless it were on late night syfy bracketed between sharknado 4 and Attack of the Lava Spiders.
But I had to watch episode 7 three times to enjoy it. Not because it was bad but because when Chewie cried so did I... it was hard to watch Han Solo die...had me wondering what can they possibly do with Star Wars now? I knew going in that the original three had to die as thats the only way the universe can move forward. But it was still hard to see.
The worst part was... Han Solo died and it still did not make Kylo Ren a threatening villain. He is just the spoiled whiney little emo poo that shanked Han Solo.
Regardless of the fact that every time I see adam driver on tv I want to sock him in the face I am interested to see where they take it all once all ties to the past are gone.
