Some people are already speculating that Star Wars IX, under the direction of JJ Abrams, will swing back toward original canon, including showing Kylo to have lied about Rey's origins and making her either a Kenobi or a Skywalker (which would be just fine with me)

I actually think they heavily went in the direction of making her Ren's sister. I mean, they laid that on really, really thick, so I think that's where they, inexplicably, go. Which makes no sense, because why wouldn't Han and/or Leia have known her, but whatever.

I’m waiting for that moment where they almost kiss and the big moment is stolen/curbed from Soapdish: “No!!! Don’t kiss her... she’s your sister!!!”

I really want to like this movie. But I absolutely hate what they did with Luke. I have never been pissed off after watching a movie. This was the first time. After what happened to Luke I just threw my hands up in the air.

This is the same Luke who risked everything to save Vader because he saw a glimpse of good still in him. And we are to buy that he turns into a coward and let Kylo and Snoke take over the galaxy and destroy his friends and the rebels? The character deserved so much better than what happened here.

Also a side note, Rian just gave a big FU to Abrams in this film.

So I am not alone on this. Honestly, you know what I hope happens? I hope Abrams pulls a Singer. No I don't mean sexual harassment Singer. I mean pulls off a sort of middle finger reset with Luke in the next film a little like X-Men.

I mean even bringing back Luke as a Force Ghost will diminish what RJ did in this film. It would be oh....there is this ending I gave to Luke....uh...no big deal he is back in the next one.

yeahhhhh.... this is the inherent problem with making a trilogy without a singular voice.

Yep. I am shocked, with the amount of control Disney exerts over Directors (Hello, Solo: A Star Wars Story), that Kathleen Kennedy would let this happen in the first place. I mean, you know there’ll be a callback to the dice in the Han Solo movie, but with the same trilogy, they wing it?

The dice never existed in the OT, did they?

Yes. They are in A New Hope when they are on board the Falcon. You can see them near the top of the screen between Luke and Obi Wan's heads when they are all in the cockpit.

yeah I don’t think like becane a coward. He became dissallisioned with power. I liked his comment but hat the force didn’t belong to anybody much less the Jedi. It made sense that bc Luke became a Jedi outside the “old way” (as a padawan in a temple, with multiple Jedi leaders, etc) it made sense that he would view all the fighting as a senseless evil outcome of an ancient disagreement of religions. See the crusades, fundamental Islam, and inquisition, etc

Yeah, no.
Hey Empire had mixed reviews when it originally came out too. I think this one will be debated for years as to where it ranks. The reason I think it's the greatest is not necessarily because of the movie itself, but what is happening outside the movie.

Half the fans are frustrated or hate it.
After 7 movies we had certain expectations or ideas of how it was going to play out and we whiffed.
A lot of fans were excited for Johnson to helm this. Maybe not so much anymore.
And, Disney doing what a lot of people feared when they bought Lucasfilm; turning it into their own and possibly destroying the franchise with a movie like this or saturating the franchise with too many movies.
Disney kills off canon and then pulls from it..

Like i said earlier this would have been a better 3rd movie of the trilogy than #2 and Abrams has his work cut out for him to try to close this out.

This.

Regarding Lukes death. I'm a little mixed on it too, but look at how Obi wan and Yoda died. Neither overly spectacular. Some speculation is that Luke ascended rather than died. Which is why Rey sensed peace with him.

When Luke says to Kylo, "See you around kid" and then he dies, I figured that mean he'd come back to haunt Kylo as a force ghost. Haunt him for turning on Luke. Haunt him for killing Solo and just haunt him about the force overall.

I’d be surprised if they went American Werewolf in London with that character.

And worse, Johnson started writing Last Jedi before Abrams was done and says he didn't really pay attention to that movie when writing. Why???

It's one thing to put your own style or ideas on a movie. It's a whole different thing to make significant characters of a franchise like this irrelevant.

Snoke is the one that really bugged me. Just seems like such a waste of a character now.

Why? Because he had a hard premiere date 2 years later he needed to hit.

And because story at this point isn’t as important to Lucasfilm and Disney as $$$ is.

I think people forget that these movies used to have three years between them. Two years is a super short amount of time to break, write, shoot, edit, do reshoots and edit and finish FX.

So I’m guessing he knew big brushes of a basic outline, but remember, apparently Awakens went through a solid amount of reshoots and was shut down for a while because of Ford’s injury.

I really didn't want to hate this movie, but I absolutely do. This is the first time I ever remember being mad after seeing a movie. Who was this director, and why was he allowed to do this? Why did nobody from Disney step in and stop this disaster?

They seemed to LOVE what he did considering based of this movie they gave him his own Star Wars trilogy to write and direct next.

I e said it and I’ll keep saying it . . . without the prequels how much would we have known about darth sidious? The same we know about Snoke.

Yeah, but who actually cares about Sidious... or the prequels for that matter?

In all fairness they did so before the fan reaction.
