Disagree with much of what everybody is saying here. Sounds like you all had heightened expectations, but the reality is that NONE of you would have been satisfied with anything he did because the original trilogy is so ingrained in your minds -- that explains the fan grades being significantly lower than critics.

The single biggest issue I had with the movie was a minor plot hole at the end, where Rey apparently escapes from Snoke's ship in some sort of stolen transport (not seen, but I believe Hux tells Kylo that) and then ends up on the Falcon. Gotta be a deleted scene somewhere that explains that.

I also thought the directing was quite good--not sure why all the Rian Johnson hate.

As far as Luke goes, it is painfully obvious that Luke is not happy, not even a little bit. He basically WANTS to die and feels he is beyond redemption. Except he isn't beyond redemption, as proven in the final showdown between he and Kylo, which was very well done, and in hindsight made sense. Did nobody notice that his force projection was basically the same Luke in appearance as he was several years earlier at the Jedi Temple? That decidedly major difference in appearance, even though the time hasn't been THAT long also shows just how used up Luke is. He almost certainly will appear as a force ghost in IX.

I loved it and even though I agree with a lot that is said about Snoke and the Emperor, I thought it was interesting that they killed him off so soon. And I thought the fact that Ren did it but did NOT turn back to the Light Side was a nice touch and made the story veer off in an unexpected way. I will say, the fight against Snoke's red guard was my favorite in the movie.

Also, did anyone else notice the music playing in the casino was a variation of the music played in the Mos Eisley Cantina? It was a nice touch.

Funny thing was my first thought when Rose and Finn looked at the horse races or whatever they were, I thought for sure it was going to be pod racers. My mistake. (Rose was great casting as well)

Nice to see at least a small part of Gwendolyn Christie. I hope she has a bigger role in IX, as it appears she is officially Finn's main rival.

Likely, but her armor did seem to be incredibly resistant to damage. I guess she could have potentially survived off screen, but I am pretty sure it was heavily implied we won't be seeing her again.

Yeah not true IMO for me. The original trilogy is ingrained in everybody’s mind but that had nothing to do with it for me. I’m a big fan of the TFA. Probably more so than others here and I have stated multiple times I love all the new characters. I still liked this movie but some of RJs choices were bad ones story wise IMO.

Had no issues with his directing or many of the other sequences outside of handling Luke and Snoke. Many of them were epic.

Disagree again. There was nothing definitive about her “death”.

Disagree again. There was nothing definitive about her “death”.

Falling several stories into a pit of fire, which should quickly consume all of the oxygen the ship had left in the vacuum of space, should be considered definitive. But then again, JJ might have other ideas.

If she was a Force user, I think it would be up for more debate, since Vader survived worse through tapping into the Dark Side.

wha? She dead. And if she's not, it's pretty freaking stupid considering how pointless her character seems to be. She's the new trilogy's version of Boba Fett... all style, no substance who keeps getting disposed of almost immediately.

We don't disagree about her character, but if you don't see her melt/disappear/get impaled by a lightsaber/shot by a blaster, there is not guarantee she died. They spent both movies making her Finn's main foil, it seemed pretty lame for her to go out like that.

That’s the funny thing about this movie. Unlike TFA which appeared to be at least liked by most, this movie is feast or famine. It has split my friends right down the middle.

what's funny for me is that movie itself is feast or famine. There were some things I loved and some I loathed. A total mixed bag, IMO.

I am not sure I laughed at any of the humor - it seemed so forced. Maybe once chuckled, but pretty much rolled my eyes at most of it. No "laugh it up, fuzzball" here, for me.
Rose and Finn were pretty much pointless - they did nothing at any point except leave a ring on the casino planet that perhaps plant some far future seeds.

Now that it came out Mark Hamill is not shying away from the fact he hated how Luke was handled just like a ton of the fans did. So even though I disagree he came off like a coward, I do 100% agree with Hamill that Luke was never the kind of character to "give up".

I will say this for TFA. Not for one second did I ever believe that Han wasn't Han or Leia wasn't Leia. That's not the case with Luke in this movie.

In a previous statement Hamill was upset at the treatment of the character and felt "I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you've made for this character," and said he was upset that this is all they think about his character. Now there is more.

“He’s not my Luke Skywalker,” Hamill.

“I said to Rian, I said ‘Jedis don’t give up.’ I mean, even if he had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup, but if he made a mistake he would try and right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference, but, it’s not my story anymore,”

"Hamill added: “I almost had to think of Luke as another character. Maybe he’s Jake Skywalker, he’s not my Luke Skywalker.”

that's my biggest issue also. It was Mark Hammil on screen, but that dude wasn't Luke Skywalker. Even a bruised and battered Luke Skywalker... he felt like a weird mash up of Yoda/Han Solo.

Even his last line to Kylo: "See you around, kid" didn't feel like Luke.

I don't have a problem with Luke giving up and retreating from the world. I just didn't buy that he seemed like an older defeated version of Luke. I bought that with Han in TFA... playing the broken hearted, but still smart-mouth. But even when legend Luke showed up, I still didn't feel like he was Luke again. Maybe a touch of it in the scene with Leia, but not in the duel with Kylo.

Gonna see it again at a screening after the New Year. Maybe it'll change my mind... or harden. time will tell.

Mark Hamill may share your opinion...saw an article from him today in which he states...that was not my Luke Skywalker

If so and that was supposed to be a callback, it didn’t work. Calling back a line like that to the originator’s kid would make no sense to him... which is usually the point of a callback.

pretty sure it was right around the beginning of the rebel attack on the death star,...when Luke says "take care of yourself...guess thats what you best at aint it"

That is NOT what Obi or Yoda did.

Obi was charged with protecting Luke. So even though he decided to become a hermit of sorts he was doing it to hide from the Empire and watch over Luke.

Yoda also was hiding from the Empire buying his time for Luke or Leila to come of age or for other Jedi to emerge to rebuild the order.

This version of Luke just gave up with no intention to do anything but waste away and die. Total crap! Like Hamill said, Luke might have done that for a short time but fought back like he always did.

A lot of that is presumption. Especially Yoda.

It’s not at all. Between the prequels, novelizations and Clone Wars it’s clear Obi and Yoda planned to wait it out in hiding to see if other Jedi survived or wait until the twins came of age.

Degobah according to canon is one of the purist planets with the force and the Dark cave was so strong with the dark side it’s able to hide Yoda. It in fact gave Yoda a vision of events to come. Qui Gon reveals the cave to Yoda. Not to mention when Obi and Yoda signal any surviving Jedi speculation is that Yoda either erased the planet from the archives or it was already erased. Yoda already knew he could hide from the Empire there.

continuing to bring up stuff that wasn't in the movies is really silly, IMO.
