My buddy and I are in the formulative stages of one called "The Irish Vacation." Think Greg Kinnear meets Leaving Las Vegas. That's all I can say right now; I've already said to much.
Casinos in Ireland?

Is Elisabeth Shue involved? If so, I'll take a ticket.

Here are the all-time opening weekend records (source). I cut it off at $100M+;

Code:
[B]1 Spider-Man 3				$151,000,000[/B]
2 Pirates of the Caribbean: DMC $135,634,554
3 Spider-Man				$114,844,116
4 Star Wars: Episode III - ROTS $108,435,841
5 Shrek 2				$108,037,878
6 X-Men: The Last Stand			$102,750,665
7 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire	$102,685,961

Here all the all-time (domestic) figures;

Code:
1 Titanic			$600,788,188
2 Star Wars			$460,998,007
3 Shrek 2 			$441,226,247
4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial	$435,110,554
5 Star Wars: Episode I - TPM	$431,088,301

The next few months will see the following films open;

Spiderman 3
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Shrek The Third

Do you think any of these films will challenge the numbers above?

Well, that didnt take long.

edit: It looks like initial estimates were $3M short. Corrected.

just wait - I expect that record to fall within a month. You're looking at THREE potential 300 million dollar movies - all ofthem comingout before June. That's unprecedented. This week's boxoffice take was up 77% from last year. SEVENTY-SEVEN PERCENT! That's insane.

It'll be pretty close, but I think Shrek the Third and Harry Potter will be the two highest grossing films this year.

Family films have staying power.

Personally, I don't plan on seeing either one.

potters have been decreasing in box office returns since the first one. Spidey with a two week headstart is going to be tough to track down but the kiddie factor with Shrek and Pirates is gonna rake in a TON of loot.

It's wierd, I never considered the Pirates franchise to be have a "kiddie" factor. I'm sure that it is just me.

I agree with that.

I must admit that I have never seen Dead Man's Chest all the way through. The first one was only average IMO.

Sorceror's Stone: 317m
Chamber of Secrets: 261m
Prisoner of Azkaban: 249m
Goblet of Fire: 289m

I don't think Order of the Phoenix will approach Sorceror's Stone, since it was the first in the series, but if it holds true and make as much or more than Goblet of Fire, the dropoff isn't great, and your postulation that it's box office has been decreasing does not bear itself in the numbers.

Pirates is going to definitely compete, but it's hard for any movie geared for an older audience to out-do the family fare.

huh, didn't realize Goblet made 289 - guess I was wrong about the last one, even though the other three definitely dropped in gross SUBSTANTIALLY, ESPECIALLY the only one that came out in summer (taking in 250), where it can be and was canabalized from a heightened market place, whereas around Thanksgiving there's no pixar movie already out or another blockbuster just waiting to knock it from it's number one perch after one weekend. However, even with this being said, the Potter and WB camp was smart in positioning Potter 5 to be the last of the MEGA-sequels to come out, so it will probably do very good business, but 300? Nah, I'll be shocked if it makes that much.

and i think it's folly to think that Pirates is all that much different in the audience it's going for versus Potter. I mean, the first two Pirates movies both crossed the 300 million dollar mark, with the second nailing ridiculous levels above 400. Numbers like that tend to show they're not just hitting an older market - they're hitting EVERYONE - the same as Potter. I just think it's weird thinking that a series which is 2/2 at 300 and over, with a huge cliffhanger on the way to end the trilogy isn't going to continue in the trend of topping Potter at this point, which only crossed the 300 threshold once during it's entire run.

but i guess we'll see.

trust me, Pirates has what exec.'s in the business refer to as the "Four Quadrant-Film". It's a movie EVERYONE is going to see.

think about this, when you were a kid, didn't you or your friend ADORE the Sinbad movie or Clash of the Titans? I think it's the same thing here.

Well, you yourself named 5 sequels that will be good, and I would throw Rush Hour 3 into that mix as well. I can't think of a year that has had this many good sequels.

so far, out of the three sequels I've named, not one has been good - were supposed to be the LOCKS of the summer quality-wise based on the talent involved. Sure they're making BANK at the box office, but do you know anyone who actually loved Spidey or Shrek 3? And all i'm hearing/reading is that Pirates is gonna be just as big of a letdown as the other two.

basically, all of these movies were rushed into the theaters not because they were good (as you surmised) but because they would make money.

I miss original filmmaking and great popcorn flicks! The two aren't mutually exclusive. :(
