ASU is ranked 5th in AdjO, but 127 in AdjD.

The problem seems to be stopping, not scoring, the ball.

I think ASU has some very talented players, but the team as a whole is not as good as they led us to believe early in the year.

ASU is very much like the SSOL Suns. It gets up the court fast, looks for a lane to penetrate or kicks the the nearest open shooter. Those same Suns also struggled against teams with size and that could play in the mud and slow the game down.

Hurley needs to teach his team patience.

Yep... Hence, my points about their lack of legit/quality bigs... They get their clock cleaned down low on a routine basis...

Or - teach them to play on stilts!

Ugh... Love how Hurley coaches this team so hard. But they’re just not that good. Their guards are way too inconsistent. And their bigs are just not good...

Yeah, I really had hopes for a big season after that hot start, but they have really fallen off a cliff since the Arizona game. Maybe it's a case of all the early success and praise going to the players' heads, or maybe everyone just finally figured out how to shut them down, but it has been a disappointing last month.

On the plus side, they are still considerably improved from a year ago, and Hurley has the program going in the right direction overall. It's just going to take a few more recruiting classes to get over the hump to a consistent elite level, assuming he keeps it going.

Don't understand why Hurley did not have them foul before the 3-pointer at the end of regulation.

Nice win tonight against a pesky Colorado team...
However, the same problems persist for this team and show that against more balanced teams who have quality bigs, the Devils have no chance. They were out-rebounded again tonight and missed every 3 point attempt in the first half. Their defense kept it close and in the second half, they finally started to make their three’s...which shows that if they are hitting their bombs, they can hang. It if they’re not, they will lose.

Great news! Even with the recent leveling off, Hurley is doing a great job. The program is only going to get better under him.

The extension keeps Hurley's contract at five years, which is the maximum the board allows.

With the extension comes significant pay increases:

  • On July 1, Hurley will receive a $700,000 raise, a bump that pushes the coach's base salary to $2.1 million.
  • In addition, Hurley, will receive $100,000 salary bumps on July 1, 2019 and 2020,
  • Hurley is also set to receive a $200,000 raise on July 2, 2021.
Also per terms of the extension: Hurley will receive a $1 million retention bonus if he is ASU's coach on Jan. 1, 2022.

Hurley, 46, currently has a base salary of $1.4 million, which ranks near the bottom of his Pac-12 peers.

This is not a good basketball team. They played way above their ability in non conference. They have no defense in the paint and on the offensive end have nobody who can drive the ball into the paint. Also Mickey Mitchell screws something up every time he touches the ball. What a disappointment.

No quality bigs to speak of makes the Devils 1 dimensional. If they're not shooting lights out, then they're pretty much screwed. They can't compete on the boards or in the paint, so they have to hustle insanely hard to be consistently competitive. Fatigue is setting in, and settling for contested 3's isn't a recipe for success.

Good win vs USC tonight. We were down most of the night then we hit some big shots in the final 2 minutes. Very entertaining game!

Watched the whole game and still can’t figure out how we won... We were 6 of 23 from three point land and shot a horrendous 62% from the free-throw line!! Crazy!!

Man your guards just destroyed ours, in particular Justice killed Wilkes, and Evans destroyed Hands. Also did a great job doubling Holiday he got 20 but was only 5-15 and got really frustrated.

That is the problem with Freshmen guards sometimes, ours were more interested in trying to outscore yours than win the game and as a result, Welsh and GG spent the whole 2nd half wondering why they never saw the ball.

That's the pattern for Alford all 5 years, in the road trips win the first game, lose the second one.

Congrats
