In any case, I have a sneaking feeling that Gordan's agent wants to wait until 2010 when both Shaq and Nash come off contract and the Suns have the money to give Dragic a big contract.

What makes you think that? The Suns can just offer him a 2-year contract for 5 million if they are looking for a big payday in 2010. He is a 2nd round pick, after all. We're certainly not going to give him a big salary sight unseen in 2 years, that's for sure.

goran's agent would be an idiot to be holding him off the nba for money purposes. if dragic is as good as the suns expect him to be, he could sign a 2 year deal for around 4 million now. Then when shaq and nash are gone, he could definitely make some more money (especially if the suns plan to make him a starter).

I don't know. What are the limits on the salary you can pay a second round player? My guess is that the limit is more the LT than the some contract issue but I don't know that for sure.

What do you call Kerr moving KT and two first round draft picks to get rid of his contract. No matter how you spin it, it amounts to selling draft picks. I think two first round draft picks converts into 6 million dollars plus the value of KT. Then KT gets turned into another first round draft pick for Seattle.

I call it cap management. Because of the bad contracts handed out by his predecessors, Kerr was forced to trim salary. Unfortunately we were pretty desperate to get rid of KT's contract, so we had to give away a lot.

Kerr gave away a little more than I would have liked, but that one bad trade doesn't make him a terrible GM

arwillan, I dont know who Mike Taylor is or how good he is. So my "bridge jumping" comment wasn't for your post.

I'm frustrated like nashman is, but I like what Kerr has done. It seems to make sense to me.

I really hope Dragic is just posturing to get the last bit of $$$ before he says "OK, I'm ready to play for Phx."

Then we can see how successful Kerr's moves were. All totalled, Dragic is the final piece to an excellent summer. (looks excellent on paper, to me anyway) He addressed all our weaknesses in one summer.

Defense
Youth mixed
Stronger bench
Coaching change
Small forward depth
Center depth

Dragic or a backup point is all that is left.

I think we all can agree that if the Suns drafted a quality center and a quality PG in the same draft, it would be a great draft.

Oh, if it can only be true.

I think I'm indulging in kool-aid too much.

I understood that there were no limits on 2nd rounders--it's common sense that a team isn't going to break the bank for a 2nd, so what's the point of setting a cap?

2nd rounders to me have always been like free agents, the only difference is that a specific team has the first right to sign him, that's all.

From a price standpoint that confirms what I thought. I think the real issue has usually been their RFA status. They generally get shorter deals, so their become free agents earlier.

I'd guess any contract they get will have a player opti out after two years as a RFA, but a longer deal with some up front bonus money so his salary after paying Tau would be better but not not count on this year's LT.

basically he went after dragic in the draft to an eastern team iirc. he's a super athletic point guard with good defensive ability.

Second-round draft picks are subject to the same salary restrictions as all "normal" players. Unless a team has cap room, their only options are to offer the minimum or dip into one of their exceptions. The Suns could offer any portion of their MLE to Dragic. (That said, it would be an extremely silly idea to offer him big money sight-unseen.)

I guess the same holds true to top five picks because they havne't played in the NBA either. In any case, IMHO the luxury tax certainly comes into play well before the MLE limit NEEDS to be considered.
