I'm kinda hoping that Dragic and Wes wake up this morning with the flu and can't play tonight against the Jazz.

This a must lose situation. Can't be like that Rockets game.

The Jazz are all but extinct but the Mavs have a chance to overtake the Lakers if they can beat them in LAtown next Tuesday. Whoever wins has the tiebreaker. If Dallas wins that game they probably nose them out by going 5-5 in their other ten games but if they lose they probably have to go 8-2 in their other ten remaining.
It doesn't seem like one game could create that much swing but if you assume for example that the Lakers go 5-5 in their other ten games left. If they beat the Mavs they finish with 42 wins and Mavs need to get to 43 to beat them out. They have 35 now so that means 8 more wins needed. On the other hand if Dallas wins that game, the Lakers end with 41 wins so Dallas needs to reach 41. Current 35 + 1 from Lakers + 5 gives them that.
The general rule is: if Mavs win the head to head they need to match Lakers wins in the other ten; if they lose they need Lakers wins + 3.

Utah has been horrible but despite themselves they're right in the mix. A game out and with probably the easiest remaining schedule of the group. Hopefully a game against us is exactly what they need to fully restore their confidence. Also worth noting, they already have the tiebreaker with LA locked down.

Metta World War has a torn MCL. Not sure if that helps or hurts the Lakers.

Whatever defensive skills they had are now gone.

Dallas beat the Clips last night. That was a big game. Keeps them right in the mix too.

Is a "cartilage tear in the lateral meniscus" the same as a torn MCL? I am no medical doctor, and neither is Metta obviously as he said he would only be out a week and a half "hopefully".

This may really help our draft position. :fingers crossed:

torn mcl is not the same thing as torn meniscus.

some players play on, some require surgery. but if you mcl goes, then you'll need surgery for sure.

Torn meniscus should be scoped and cleaned. That requires a two week recovery at least. He could play on it but it really hampers mobility.

LA currently has the tie-breaker over Dallas, but they play eachother one more time, if Dallas wins they will be 2-2 vs eachother and the tiebreaker becomes their conference records, which we wont know until the end of the year.

If the season were to end today, we'd have just our lottery pick, right? Anyone know what the % chance of it being a top pick is? We currently have the 4th worst record in the NBA.

Our own pick would be our only lottery pick, but we'd also have Miamis pick, last of the 1st round.

Here's the table of the odds of getting the #1 pick based on your positioning (top of the chart is worst record, bottom is the best)

250 combinations, 25.0% chance of receiving the #1 pick
199 combinations, 19.9% chance
156 combinations, 15.6% chance
119 combinations, 11.9% chance
88 combinations, 8.8% chance
63 combinations, 6.3% chance
43 combinations, 4.3% chance
28 combinations, 2.8% chance
17 combinations, 1.7% chance
11 combinations, 1.1% chance
8 combinations, 0.8% chance
7 combinations, 0.7% chance
6 combinations, 0.6% chance
5 combinations, 0.5% chance

So right now its a 11.9% chance if the Suns are in 4th from the bottom. I'm really hoping they can catch Cleveland for that 3rd worst record. They obviously won't have the 1st or 2nd worst record, but getting another 4% chance would be nice.

that's insane to me.. 4th worst record and only a 11% chance. does the NBA do it like this to avoid teams tanking on purpose? why don't they do it like the NFL? in theory you could be the worst team for 5 years in a row and never see the top pick.

Thank the Spurs, who shamelessly tanked in order to get David Robinson.

man... i wonder if this helps the Lakers more then it hurts.

Its what we expected--the result of DAntoni's short substitution patterns. Eventually older players break down. I can't see it helping unless Jodie Meeks suddenly blows up.

Pau is not back to full strength. Both Kobe and Dwight are still hurting. Eventually it has to unravel.

Kobe is going to move to SF on defense. That should be a little more physical pounding on him.

It still might not be enough though.

If we win this game tonight, our mgmt team has no brains.

Didn't they tank to get Duncan? Or at least, sat out Robinson with some kind of phantom injury during the strike year?

The way I recall it, Robinson had a legit injury and missed most (all?) of the season and as a result they performed far below expectations. By the time he was perhaps able to play again they were a non-factor in the league and the season was winding down. I'm not sure if he was fully healthy or if he was still trying to recover but they opted to shut him down and I think they rested Sean around the same time although I could be wrong there.

The biggest tank job in recent years was the Cavaliers to get James. Unfortunately, even though it had only a 25% chance of working, the tank paid off, and so now other teams are more likely to consider it when there's a potential franchise player coming out.

Im not big on conspiracy theories, but it does strike me as slightly fishy that the year that a huge potential star player comes out of Ohio, Cleveland gets the #1 pick (James). The year a huge star player comes out of Chicago, the Bulls get the #1 pick (Rose). Especially considering the Bulls had to overcome extremely long odds in the lottery to win it and get Derrick Rose.

If the Raptors get the #1 pick next year and the right to draft Toronto native Andrew Wiggins, Im officially going to have my tinfoil hat on.

Yes, they did tank that season with Robinson "hurt"

You make it seem like his back injuries were complete BS, but the reality is that Robinson actually had back surgery and movibg forward, continued to have back problems which plagued him the rest of his career and ultimately led to his retirement. Bringing him back after back surgery to a team that was already awful that season was more smart management of a player then anything else.
