If any of you can give me a list of things Rick Welt did that negatively impacted the product on the floor, I'll worry about this hire. Otherwise, I think this position is not much more than "corporate handler." It's not like he can do hiring/firing in basketball ops without Sarver's permission. Sarver's still in charge there. He was hired to make sure Sarver doesn't have to make day-to-day decisions on non-basketball ops.

Well put. Much ado about very little.

I could just as easily ask you to provide a list of things Rick Welt did do that didn't impact the product negatively on the floor.

I don't think any of us can assume what happens behind closed doors but considering how little Sarver knows about basketball, I can see him doing what most business people do. They sit around a big table and ask each other opinions. Sarver might have the final say but I find it hard to believe he is not asking everybody in his inner circle their opinions on things he doesn't know......like basketball.

Precisely my point.

Here is a perfect example:

We want to trade Steve Nash because it is better for basketball operations to get something of value for hm before he retires. However, the president of business operations speaks out heavily against this move because it will negatively impact the business aspect of the company.

Any acquisition or loss of corporate assets (AKA Players) is going to involve him since corporate assets affect the corporate outlook. It is common sense.

Now this I could see happening. I'm not sure why it would matter if he had a basketball background though. Unless he has carte blanche to just make this kind of decision I don't see it as a problem.

Well ideally you want people who have input into your business decisions to have a strong grasp of your business. For instance, we wouldn't hire the manager of McDonalds to manage a hospice DME site. Same type of role, but the knowledge base to be successful at the position is critical.

I have no idea what Rick Welt did, and I'm not sure anyone else outside the organization does, either. Which was my point.
