Right now, I really (*1000) doubt that. Unless Marion has nowhere 2 go by the time the season starts...and from our FO perspective they would love to retain Hill first, maybe grab Frye and then THINK about him......

I would love Marion back. We could sign him to a 3 year deal, let Clark and Dudley develop. Clark would be excellent off the bench and our depth would really improve.

A lineup of

Nash/Dragic/Barbosa
Richardson/Barbosa/Tucker
Marion/Dudley/Clark
Amare/Amudson/Frye/Clark
Chandler/Lopez/Stoudemire

That is extremely deep.

If the Suns are indeed interested in bringing back Marion (though I doubt they could afford him any more than Odom), wouldn't that be finally admitting that the moves over the last two seasons have been a mistake? It seems that Kerr is trying to put the same team together we've had two years ago, albeit two years older. Then again, he could just as well tear it all down tomorrow and that wouldn't surprise me either.

No. The only way it would be a mistake is if you think the Suns were going to win a title with Marion. Our record was great except against the elite teams over the last season and a half with Marion. It was a good risk trade no matter what IMO.

Also saying that Cleavland might be interested.

Cavs beat writers are agreeing with that. The cavs can offer the full MLE, same as the Suns. I assume he'd take Cleveland's offer first as they have a good shot at winning the title.

True, but the Shaq trade made us worse in all actuality. Our pick and roll defense became much worse, we had chemistry problems(even if there was growing chemistry problems with Marion on the team, at least we won games), and we declined much faster. Now that Shaq is gone, the Suns must get a defensive center. I still would rather have a Marion/Amare/Chandler front court than a Dudley/Amare/Fropez frontcourt.

I don't think he will go to the Suns though. He will probably end up in Cleveland.

Depth is useless unless it's quality depth. Counting Amundson and Lopez among your second-stringers, or counting Tucker at all, isn't quality depth. You can make very long lists at each position with names separated by slash marks, but that doesn't indicate depth.

Amudson is a great hustler who plays defense and can finish around the rim(though his free throw shooting is horrible). If we get Frye, it only bolsters our depth. Lopez showed great improvement near the end of the season. He is a good shot blocker and will only get better. He will probably never be a starter, but he can become a great energy guy of the bench. Dudley is also a great defender who hit the three well near the end of the season. I can't wait to see how our bench contributes this season.

Agree except on the Amundson point. I think he is a good bench guy. Maybe not a good every night bench guy but better then alot of the crap we have had on our bench over the years. You need guys like Amundson that you can go a few games, not play the guy and he won't get upset yet still contribute every once in a while.

Huh? It was a horrible trade, IMO. By bringing Marion back mgmt is pretty much confirming this fact; only problem is that it's 2 years later and we can't go back in time.

I would love to have Shawn back in Phoenix.

Huh?? How does keeping a guy that would not have brought you a title a bad trade? You can't win unless you take risk. There was no risk involved in keeping Marion unless you count taking the risk he would destroy your locker room more then he had at the time. Plus this team had a horrible record with Marion against the elite.

Bringing back Marion would just be to bring some depth back to the team. It's not like the Suns think bringing back Marion means title. They didn't then and they don't now.

The only problem with Marion was his high salary and some occasional complaining because he thought he deserved more credit. Both of these issues should be resolved now. Marion should know where he stands around the league. I'd like to have him back.

Love Matrix back but trying to see into Marion's thoughts: why would he come back to the team that tried on multiple occasions to trade his ass? There will be plenty of other teams interested in him and I'll be surprised if he chooses us over other teams if the money is the same.

:biglaugh: Truth

If we could some how sign Marion to a low risk deal and bring Chandler on they could make one final run this up coming year. You would think he is comfortable with the fan base, system, and area so I am not sure he would want to go to Cleveland to play with Shaq in what assuredly will be a defensive first team. Maybe he would even do it on a one year basis to get his value back up. He doesn't seem like a guy that "needs" to geta ring. I think its more important to him he validates his self worth.

I like Dragic in year 2 and hopefully Earl Clark is skilled to bring along something. Then we could roll out a starting unit next year of Nash, Richardson, Marion, STAT, and Chandler. That would be the best defensive, rebounding unit we could put out and would be tailor made for up and down action. A motivated Amare and Nash could make or break the year.

Then if it doesn't work you go after a big name guy once Amare and Nash leave (or re-up Amare and let Nash walk) and only really have Chandler and Richardson hogging up the books.

Right now not having out 2010 pick its smart to roll the dice and take one last chance next year as you can then say you exhausted the Nash era and still be in a position to reshape the team with only Chandler being the hold over contractually and only at one more year IIRC. The west should be weaker next year too with Houston being done, Utah likely losing Boozer at some point, and if New Orleans is going to lose Chandler.

Its all about timing. Why blow it up this year if we aren't getting the pick? It sounds like we aren't going to get fair return for a trade anyway.

Because even if you get the pick, it's not like that pick makes or breaks your season anyway. Blowing it up this season or next season will still have the same result. No title. I get the argument for trading away pieces now so you can load up on talent or future picks. That makes more sense to me than rolling out a "competitive" team that won't make the playoffs or get bounced in the first round.

It didn't make them worse, at least not the year it happened. While pick and roll defense may have gotten worse, the team's ability to rebound and play straight up defense improved dramatically.

As for chemistry problems, there really weren't any once Marion was shipped out, and the decline was already in motion before the trade happened.

Do you all forget that Marion pretty much tanked the season he was traded anyway? He hasn't been the player he was even three years ago.

My contention is that if you know the team is needing a makeover at some point then why can't you hold off a year? Answer me this - What are we going to get for Amare or Nash now and sucking all next year with Lopez starting at Center? You lose millions in your product, still lose those name players, and Don't have a legit draft pick to help brign in some youth.

IMO the West will be down. Taking low risk flyers on a 1.9M Marion and a couple years of Chandler is not going to significantly hinder the rebuilding process. If a FA is going to come next year the money is going to be close to the same. Might as well see if Nash with a guy who can defend and rebound is what the team needed opposed to Shaq.

Its worth the risk IMO and not hurting your long term rebuilding plan either. Thats the only way you wouldn't make that move is if you were bringing in longer terms contracts for mediocre players (see Biedreins, Andres) and keep trying to put bandages on gaping wounds. With Chandler and Marion you can still blow it up next year and get similar results.

And maybe even a playoff run.

What if he just isn't that good anymore? His numbers have been pretty average since he last left Phoenix and I doubt he's gotten any better since then.
