Wow, this really sucks. The Cards need to find a way to replace him. We HAVE to sign another player or work out a trade for someone. I don't have any suggestions as to who, but I hope the front office does.

This seems to happen every year in the Green era. Management seem to think the O-line will be OK and declines to pursue help. It inevitably blows up in our face.

How about BJ and "whatever it takes" to philly for Winston Justice.

Can Justice even be traded at his point in the process????

Impossible. There's no way Philly could absorb the cap hit. If you are looking for a trade possibility, you have to find a vet in the last year of his deal who his current team is not set on keeping. Almost certainly a backup on his current team.

Let's see who fits that criteria....

Anthony Clement! :)

Any others?:D

I am not happy that Ross is hurt, but this is better for the team in the short term and long term. Guys go back and watch some game film ... I thought Anthony Cement was bad, but Ross upped him last year like no other.

This is actually a blessing in disguise if you ask me and I never wanted Ross as a starter anyways. I was really hoping Philly would not have jumped in front of us and taken Justice, but it happened. Now time to move on and move Wells to RT and Lutui to LG. I even believed it needed to happen to have our five best on the OL right now. I know Lutui is a RC and will make a few mistakes, but him and BIG are going to be maulers on the left side.

We still have Step, Bridges, Wakefield, and hopefully Ross as a backup. This is not great, but unless someone becomes available I want these guys to start gelling NOW.

If Wayne Hunter is still an FA then he is the best option. I would like to see Wells moved to RT and then give Lutui a shot at LG. We aren't in severe trouble, we have pieces that the coaches can work with. Milford Brown can play either Guard spot and either E. Brown, Wells, Wakefield, or Lutui can play RT.

There is no point in even worrying about Ross now. We have to move forward with the current group of guys and hope they come together.

I think Elton Brown will eventually end up at RT. But I hope Wakefield can prove me wrong.

Exactly! We have to look forward. I'm not sure this is a huge overall blow to the team. Losing Ross hurts the run game, BUT Wakefield was a better pass-blocker than Ross last season.

Why not?

(I ask for technical reasons,, not because I think the y would even consider any realistic trade offers)

Because his entire signing bonus would accelerate onto the cap this season. Then, they would have to absorb Johnson's salary as well. While they might be able to do that (I'm not sure how much space Philly has left.), that's why trades are so rare in the NFL.

I see. So it's not that thet can't trade him, they won't.

Yeah, I understand about accelertaed signing bonuses--but the mantra that "trades don't happen in the NFL" is not as rock-solid as it used to be. Trades are happening with more and more frequency. (again, I don't mention this because I think we're going to trade for a starting waulity RT, I just mention it as part of the larger discussion).

That makes it highly unlikely, but as soon Justice signed his contract the Eagles were able to trade him.

They could trade him before he signed his contract, too. See Manning/Rivers.

Can't trade rookies....would have to wait until the 2nd year of his contract.I asked this question earlier myself.....thinking that Philly could really use BJ.joeshmo, I believe (perhaps Russ Smith, I can't recall) set me straight on this.

Yeah, they could've. That's why you'd have to be extremely leery of trading for a rookie after he signed his contract. Why would a team make a big investment in a guy and then turn around and trade him? If they really liked him, they would go with the much more usual trade offer of draft picks.

I'd never heard of that. Interesting.

Different Angle

An optimistic aspect of the aftermath of the Ross injury appears to be Loney's approach to Oliver's replacement.

Last season, each time a guy would go down, there would be a wholesale shuffling of the O-line (presumably to "get the best 5 guys on the field.") Unfortunately "Five Best Guys" doesn't always = "Best Unit" on the Field. So many linemen were shuffled from one spot to another that no one ever got comfortable playing their position and the line never jelled.

By moving Wakefield and Bridges over to RT, Loney caused minimal impact to the other four positions - those dudes remain where they are.

From Calvisi's piece today, the emphasis seems to be on (a) getting the O-line to play as a unit and (b) getting the timing down between the line and the RB's. By keeping 4/5 of the line intact after Ross's injury, I think Loney is keeping his eye on the ball and that - barring any more bizarre stuff - the O-line should show improvement.

Of course, that said, the O-line's GOTTA perform better than they did in yesterday's drills. But the reality is that improvement won't come because we were able to add any new players. It will have to come from individual improvement and playing better together as a unit.

I am afraid that this offensive line is going to cost Green his job in the end. I dont want that to happen because he runs the draft so well for us. I have nightmares about our next coach picking players such as Wendell Bryant and Tom Knight

"Finally, there will be more injuries. It's a fact of pro football. Just hope we have backups who can step up to replace anyone who goes down."

as usual a logical post from jeff g. just to echo his thought....injuries are like death and taxes....and as he said we just have to hope that the guys filling in can do a commendable job....if this was later in the year after everything was in place and the available waiver prospects were picked clean...then it is more of an issue...........looks like jeff bridges (maybe) is back again!!! we will see a few bodies coming and going from camp the next few days.

Jeff, I'm hoping the reason they look so bad is because our DL is so good.

My hope too. But, in this era of "accountability", that kind of thinking is what get coaches fired. The O-line has to step up to the challenge.

When talking about players that could have been brought in during the off-season......

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/peter_king/08/03/postcard.jaguars/index.html

3. I think Mike Williams, the refugee Buffalo offensive tackle, won't make the team. He had to lose 37 pounds for Del Rio to even allow him to come to training camp (because he was so overweight in the offseason), and now he's not practicing because of a sore back. The third tackle seems more likely to be another failed first-rounder, ex-Lion Stockar McDougle.
