I'm sorry guys but IMO it's not worth the flyer when you know he has concussion issues & he never even makes a training camp practice, given the way this league is treating concussions today & lawsuits filed by players because of injury!

This could've been a Brady, Novacek, Matt Birk, Terrell Davis, Al Harris, etc.

It does happen...and IMO a team coming off a 5-11 record shouldn't be throwing away picks.

And 2 of those guys are Aggies...go figure :D At least some of the Horns kids have contributed to the Cards program.

Hell, never draft one again cause they mostly have sucked for the Cards led by Lectric Leland ;)

John David Crow was a tough hombre' back in the day for the Big Red Bucky! Matter of fact I would put him in at least the top 5 RB's in Cardinal history!

Yes I remember watching John David Crow play for the St Louis Football Cardinals. I really am that young!:)

But it wasn't taking a chance. It was wasting a pick.

I'm not too worried about it or waling, but it was a wasted pick.

For the record one last time. I specifically texted my scouting friend during the draft around round 3 about Swope. He replied, great kid, good player, but his brains are scrambled eggs from concussions. So, it's not like the info wasn't out there.

Again, not a huge deal but still a worthless pick.

I thought you had said your friend said he had soup for brains...

Or Lindley, Calvin, Sturdivant, etc.

Let's not catastrophize this situation as anything more than a low risk pick that crapped out. It does suck, but at the end of the day, the team isn't going to be impacted much, if anything. Read my earlier post regarding taking chances like these. It's not like we're going to ruminate after losses going, "Gee, I bet Swope would have made that catch."

In addition, we had two 6th round picks (and two 4th rounders). We had picks to spare, and IMO, not every draft pick was going to make the roster anyway. Moreover, we have a good group of UDFA WRs who are ready to fill the void left behind.

I don't think it was a throw-away at all. It was a hit or miss gamble and looks like they missed.

Rather miss on a 6th rounder than a 1-3.

Hope the kid gets healthy and does whatever he wants (football or otherwise).

Ok, limit the odds of failure. Don't draft a guy you know has a pretty bad history of head injuries given the league new policies. Would you draft a skill position player who tore his ACL 4 times? Not me

I understand your point, but I don't agree with it. If we are talking rounds 1-3, I'm with you. But round six? Roll the dice. The odds are really strongly against a healthy six-rounder making the roster.

Yet, I suspect this place would be vey upset if Andre Ellington was cut tomorrow.

Odds are against making as a 6th rounder but you still take guys that have a chance to make the roster. If the Cards wanted to take someone out of Texas(the state), they should have just drafted Duckjake. He had as good a chance of playing for the Cards as Swope.

David Carter and Reggie Wells have had nice careers as 6th round players. Nobody is arguing the point that odds are against 6th rounders making an impact, but it does happen. The point is taking a guy that had no chance of playing is not very smart and it was pretty clear that Swope had no chance of playing.

When I said in an earlier post the following comment below, I hope it was obvious I did not mean to use the word "first." It should have read "late round draft picks." Like picks in the 6th and 7th rounds.

Agree 100%. Late first round picks and undrafted FAs should not be considered as throwaways. There are some that are going to help teams.

Carry on. :)

Ding ding ding, this drives home the point perfectly! If a fans name was called out on ESPN & the Cards didn't it as a joke, this board would be in total meltdown mode. I would've drafted Buck instead of Duck if it came down to a Texas boy. :D

Ellington has to really screw up to not make the roster. The Cards are really RB thin. That was a value pick, IMO.

Yup, and Kurt Warner was undrafted and Pat Tillman was a 7th.

But the Cowboys spent a pick on Herschel Walker when they knew he was going to the USFL. In the NBA, the Spurs drafted David Robinson when they knew he had a Navy commitment. Cards drafted Tyrann Mathieu with a 3rd when he has a history of drug problems. Eric Swann didn't even play in college.

With an extra 6th, roll the dice. Still have zero problem with it.

Which brings up a question, how long do draft rights last? Is it just one year or more? Could he re-enter if he gets healthy?

While I agree that I don't like wasting draft picks this was a gamble that didn't pay off.

These are WR's that were drafted after Swope.
Justin Brown - Steelers
Alan Bonner - Texans
Cobi Hamilton - Bengals
Brice Butler - Raiders
Charles Johnson - Packers
Kevin Dorsey - Packers
Marquess Wilson - Bears
Aaron Mellette - Ravens

RB's drafted after Swopes and before Ellington:
Latavius Murray - Raiders
Kenjon Barner - Panthers

So if either of these turn out better than Ellington and the Cards had them rated higher and should have drafted one of them instead of Swopes.....

I do think that a speed demon WR was on BASK's shopping list so I doubt they would have taken another position. Maybe they would have taken a TE at Swopes slot and waited until the 7th rd to take a WR or another RB.

This 'waste of a pick' crap is asinine

Whos the better pick:

2nd round talent in the 6th who might not work out

6th round talent in the 6th who might not work out

Worth the risk. Grow a pair and stop being so frightened of stealing a great player. Doesnt panout? Aw well, looks Robert Gill is killing it and we used no picks on him. So keep crying about it like it matters

Yeah, if you use the THESMEL talent rating system.

Which gives tons of points for the Aggies blowing out Oklahoma, and subtracts tons of points for getting your butts handed to you by Oklahoma and it's terrible Big 12 defense. :p

Wide Receivers play defense? That's new and different.

Who has the most recent BCS title? Oklahoma, ASU, Arizona or Texas? A&M is irrelevant because they've never won anything.

:p

None of the above. Alabama, who only lost to A&M. :p

Ellington has to really screw up to not make the roster. The Cards are really RB thin. That was a value pick, IMO.

Since Arians doesn't carry a FB on the roster, that leaves an extra space for either another running back or tight end. The belief is there will be four RBs on the roster. You're right, Ellington would have to either screw up or get injured.

That being said, the depth chart, IMO, will be 1) Mendenhall 2) Williams 3) Ellington 4) Taylor

I keep hearing too much about Ellington's explosiveness and ability to get to the corner that there's no way that he gets cut or put on the PS.

Not necessarily. Once you already know that a gamble didn't pay off, of course you can think of better ways you could've spent the money. But that still doesn't mean it was wrong to gamble in the first place. That depends on the odds and whether you can spare the initial stake. Those are matters for debate, but you can't judge the rationality of the bet based on the outcome or the outcomes of alternative choices, all of which were unknown at the time.

This thinking makes no sense.

Following this theory, if a guy has 2nd round talent but suffers a spinal cord injury and is never going to be able to play in the NFL, the Cards should go ahead and take a chance on him in round 6 just because he was a 2nd round talent before the injury rather than taking a healthy guy with 6th round talent.

To me, that's pretty asinine.

Well if either of those two RB's go Alfred Morris on the league then I will be disappointed in the bet on Swopes. Well unless Ellington turns into Sproles.
This of course is also dependent on whether.....

OK, I see your point. :)

He got married over the weekend. I have friends who work at A&M, tutoring the athletes, so they were invited. Here was his groom's cake:

^ That's awesome he had 2 groom's cakes! The first being a great representation of his time with the Aggies, and the second being a great representation of his time with the Cardinals.
