I don't 'hate' Q - but I don't think he's worth $1.75 M, and I'll be vexed if they sign him to a multi-year contract or an extension at anything remotely near that amount.

It just seems like a real inconsistency to me. If we are having tryouts - why not just have tryouts? If we know DeVore isn't in the future then send the guy to Tucson, and bring up Varner for a shot, but then let the kid play, not sit on the bench.

And while I agree Good is much better as a reliever (like ERA over 17 as a starter and around 3.5 as a reliever - but only started two games) his overall numbers are better than Fossum, Cormier, and Gonzalez in terms of BB:K, homers, ERA. I mean, it's a lost cause anyhow, so I guess it doesn't matter.

There were many who were very vocal when they signed Q. They did not want him. Why do you keep talking about sending guys down to Tucson. The season is almost over and they will be bring guys up in September?

As for Good, he has had his chances the last 2 years. He has shown nothing as a starter. He has absolutely no fastball and his junk pitches don't fool major league hitters the second time around. I would give Gosling a shot over Good, Randolph and Dessens. Dessens has shown he is a better pitcher coming out of the bullpen.

RJ, Webb, Dessens, Fossum, Good

As has been pointed out earlier, Good is absolutely atrocious as a starter. He needs to get better at long relief if he's going to stick in the bigs, which I find doubtful.

I can see the whole Dessens starting thing because if he does well over the next few starts, he may get more value in a waiver trade. Although out of the 'pen his ERA since the A.S. Break has been 2.87, so someone might want him if we were willing to pay the rest of his contract. Getting lit up as a starter will obviously prevent any sort of trade.

Fossum is not great, but he's also definitely this bad. I don't know if he's tipping pitches or his velocity is way down, but he's getting rocked. Whether he figures it out in Tucson or up here doesn't matter as long as he figures it out.

Like I said earlier, Randolph leads the team in batting average allowed at .191. What's the harm in giving him a shot? If he keeps walking guys as a starter, then he's as good as gone in '05 when Moorad goes Jamesian. If he doesn't, maybe we have a cheap #5 on our hands. I know Kelvim Escobar among others have had control problems as a reliever due to overthrowing that they have reigned in as a starter.

Personally, I'm hesitant to throw Gosling to the wolves and to a new coaching staff when he's probably going to be hearing different things from his pithcing coaches in a few months. Especially after we have essentially thrown Cormeir and Gonzalez into the fire knowing that they would struggle. Randolph is 30 and if he gets ruined, who cares?
