I like Rondo and he could help the Pelicans a lot. I know Cousins endorsed his signing so that should help in terms of chemistry. He's a great passer who should help Davis and Cousins score but who knows if that'll be enough for them to win. If they had a couple of knock down shooters then they could be contenders but in the 5 years that Davis has been there the shooters they've had have struggled to stay healthy and then they traded the best shooter they had left in Buddy Hield to bring in Cousins.
I think it's interesting that Houston hired D'Antoni and achieved some regular season success right away with 2 key players from New Orleans that played with Davis in Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson. They had Alvin Gentry take over as coach for the 2015-16 season and he's very familiar with the 7 Seconds Or Less D'Antoni system since he ran a similar version of that here after D'Antoni went to New York. I don't think it's something that would work with both Davis and Cousins but it could have worked with the team they had in his first year if they could stay healthy. No starter played more than 64 games in 2015-16 season and that was Omar Asik, Jrue Holiday played in 65 but only started 23, Tyreke Evans played in 25 games, Eric Gordon played in 45 games while starting 44 of them, and Davis played and started in just 61 games.
They had 42 different starting lineups throughout that season utilizing 20 different players, that's got to be close to an NBA record, heres a link to view them. It wasn't a situation like the Suns or 76'ers where they're really young or tanking either but that they've just can't stay healthy. His second year there wasn't much better but at least they had the Cousins trade to account for some of the lineup changes,
they had 13 different starters and 28 different starting lineups. If they don't make the playoffs this year then Gentry will be out of a job for sure.
I'm not sure if Gentry would be a good fit for this Suns team or not but I wouldn't be against giving him a look in the offseason. That is if he has any interest in returning to Phoenix. His firing was overshadowed by the hiring of Lindsey Hunter and Majerle's departure so I don't know if there is any bad blood. He was fired by the Blanks/Babby front office though and with McD in place that might open the door for a return. I know he hasn't succeeded in New Orleans but I can't blame him after looking over their roster, it's poorly constructed and plagued with injuries. If Majerle is hired as head coach though I'd like to see Gentry come with to help him as a rookie head coach for his first year. Watson had Bob Hill for his first year as head coach, or half season, when he took over for Hornacek. Hill was brought in as an experienced head coach to help Watson find his way being an NBA head coach and ultimately helped him get the job full time instead of just being the interim head coach. Hill was brought in after Hornacek was fired also so his hiring was specifically to help Watson and I think any rookie head coach needs an experienced vet that can show them the ropes. Once Hill left after that half season is when Watson started looking worse and worse. I'm not for hiring Majerle but I'm not against it either, with Gentry as an assistant I could be convinced it was the best move available though.
