I know they didn't want to lose Embiid but would teams have lined up to sign him as a restricted free agent? I don't even think Philly would need to put out word they'd match to scare suitors off, his injury history is enough. If he doesn't play more than 70 games this year I highly doubt another team would have offered him the max, which the 76'ers could have matched even if they did. This deal could kill their franchise for the next 5 years if he doesn't stay healthy. For their sake I hope they have team options involved.
It will probably get Brian Colangelo fired if it doesn't pan out. I wouldn't give them much credit for it, either way, it's easy to spend someone else's money. If Jerry owned the 76'ers I doubt he'd allow that extension at this point.
I wonder if they could even get the deal insured, Amare's last max deal couldn't be insured which is why the Suns didn't want to guarantee all the years. We saw how that played out in New York also. Of course the Knicks are one of the few teams in the league who wouldn't be hurt by having $25 million a year in dead money being paid out each year. Knicks and the Lakers are probably the only 2 teams in the league who could afford a deal like that going south without insurance.
