"2002 first-round pick Sergio Santos is expected to be the prospect included in the Troy Glaus deal with the Blue Jays.
That makes a lot of sense, as the Diamondbacks want to commit at Chad Tracy at third base and also have Stephen Drew, and hopefully Justin Upton, at shortstop. Santos hit just .239/.288/.367 in a disappointing first year in Triple-A, but he only turned 22 in July. He could become a quality regular after another year or two in the minors. "

No way. No fing way. I hate this deal. We can get so much more if we are looking to trade Santos!! Now if we don't get League in this deal I will personally go and burn down Brynes' new office. What a POS deal!

Also, there are other reports that state that Toronto might not be willing to pay Glaus' whole salary. If we send them Santos and Glaus for Hudson and Batista we better have two players to be named later who go by McGowan and League.

Glaus career batting average is .253!!!! TWO FIFTY THREE!!! He is not very good. Also, he isn't clutch, is injured a lot, and is a poor defender, Im glad to see him go. Like others have said, we are building for the future and clearing out money to sign young studs like Upton. This upcoming year will suck, but the future looks bright.

Good trade. These moves all see a clear direction, something Joe G's rarely did. Byrnes recognizes the strength of the team is in the farm system, and is building a nice foundation for them, ala the Indians.

First, the argument of what the Dbacks get exchange for Glaus compared to what their respective teams net for Manny Ramirez and Miguel Tejada is an extremely invalid one.... Let's compare their output for the past few seasons, shall we?:

Also, let's take into account all the other player's accolades/accomplishments along with the fact that they're relatively more respectable defensively compared to Glaus (who the Blue Jays are debating whether or not if he's a liability at 3B).... Do you honestly beleive that another organization would give-up talent of the calibre you're requesting strictly for just Glaus? Absolutely not... They would immediately demand that the Dbacks would have to include Connor Jackson or Carlos Quentin in the deal.... Then, you ask about the short-solution in CF when Jeff DaVanon still could be had along with some other fairly decent and cheap stopgaps......

That all being said....I'm very mixed on this deal.... True, the Dbacks will finally clear 3B so Tracy could become the regular there...also clears-up more money to sign him a guaranteed long-term deal (which was rumored the Dbacks were in the middle of negotiations to solve that matter).... Also, it might free-up money to acquire some of the mid-tier starters that are available.... Hudson did show some power last season, however, I'm questioning why the Dbacks need a 2B when they just added Easley to share middle infield duties w/Cintron and Counsell until Drew is fully capable to be a full-time Major Leaguer himself... However, we cannot forget that Hudson also was the AL Gold Glover winner last season and appears to improve with age.... The Dbacks already have a Batista clone at this time and his name obviously is Claudio Vargas.... Although, at least Batista has proven himself as a good quality starter and could flourish in the role as a closer if needed....

I hope though that these leaked reports were part of a ploy by Byrnes and co. to force the Red Sox and Orioles to both up their ante in who they're willing to part with for Glaus (assuming that Santos would be included in any package).... The Red Sox are still reeling from losing Damon to their hated rivals and wouldnt be able to withstand the idea that Glaus would be a decent upgrade to their other inner-division foes..... If the Red Sox and Orioles drove-up the bargaining price for Glaus, then that might force the Blue Jays to be so inclined to sacrifice even more than what is rumored... So, it's all in Byrnes and co. hand to capitalize on this....

If this trade did indeed materialize... I would expect for Cintron to be finally dealt to the White Sox for some lower prospect... also.... Eric Byrnes is still available, so the Dbacks could invest the money they gain by trading Glaus to give Eric Byrnes an offer he cannot refuse.... Then, perhaps that money can be earmarked to obtain Josh Fogg or perhaps Ryan Franklin to be a back-end of the rotation starter.....

Perhaps it isnt realistic, but I hope the Red Sox are the team that Glaus ended-up because it could bring them either Clement or Arroyo with some quality prospects... The Orioles still want to deal both Bedard and perhaps Jorge Julio, however, it seems the Dbacks arent in the market for a closer.... Also, if the Blue Jays trade did transpire, this could give the Dbacks more money to be willing to acquire Tavarez (the best reliever still on the open market).... So, perhaps the other advantage of this trade is that it provides the Dbacks more flexibility to afford players within their own $65 mil payroll projection.... Then, we all know that next offseason's FA market is a lot stronger than this one.....

So, essentially for an injury prone..horrid defensively 3B (whose work ethic has been severly questioned also) the Dbacks are netting a Gold Glove up-and-coming 2B and a veteran savvy pitcher who's excelled as both a starter and closer.... However, I honestly hope that the Red Sox counter with a better offer of their own... Stay tuned.....

So, essentially he's making progress each and every year and could prove to make a long-term impact as well... Even if the Dbacks did immediately sign Upton..he'd still be at least 2-3 years away from making it to the Majors....

Edit: The stats appear more satisfactory on IE than FireFox

Is the proposed Glaus trade satisfactory?

I can't believe we will trade a top prospect and a proven homerun/RBI guy for a 34 year old pitcher and a middle infielder and then to boot throw in a top prospect and cash???????? Are we f'n nuts? People complained about Garagiola but Mr. Byrnes has not impressed me so far. This is paying premiums in players to dump payroll. I don't see how it improves the team unless you buy the addition by subtraction theory. In my view these are giveaway deals just like the Vasquez deal.

I think you guys are all overreacting to this. Byrnes is trying to build this team right so they can win. His goal is to make this a stable organization where you can win for the next 10 years not just a single season. Glaus is overrated and over paid and Santos doesn't have a spot in this organization. Byrnes is trying to clean up the mess Joe G left him with.

I think it's safe to say, should this deal go down, Toronto will be pretty well set at the Corner IF position. Overbay, Glaus, Hillenbrand (sounds like the Ex-Diamondback Alumni Corner), Koskie and Hinske. Funny thing, Glaus's signing ultimately led to Shea's trade from Arizona, now it looks like his acquisition is going to force Shea's trade from Toronto. Don't think the Hillenbrands will be sending Troy Glaus too many Kwanzaa, Chaunaka or Christmas cards anytime soon :p

We have been fleeced twice this off season if the Glaus trade goes down as is. We get older w/ Hernandez and Batista, Vizciano is 31, and we don't get any immediate help (Chris Young, CF of future). We should have went for young pitchers like McCarthy, Chacin, and Towers. Glaus may not be mobile but he gets paid to hit and drive in runs not run bases. Vazquez will have an all star year w/ Chicago mark my words. There aren't any CF available now and we have no interest in trading or signing any good pitchers. Our offseason earns a "F" grade, season outlook 100 losses next year.

Although some points, I agreed with (Glaus gets paid to hit and drive in runs, should have gone after McCarthy, Chacin or Towers), I think your assessment is a few pages off the mark.

First, regarding Vazquez and the "immediate help" comment, sometimes the net return in exchange for the veteran is worth making the gamble. Think the Astros regretted trading a pretty decent, albeit older pitcher in Larry Anderson for a young unknown in Jeff Bagwell? Think the Braves regret trading Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz? More recently, think the Pirates regret trading Brian Giles, who was without question their best (and only) offensive bat in exchange for Bay and Perez?

Sometimes you have to make calcluated risks and make gambles for the future. Was this the White Sox deal the best one Arizona could have gotten? Probably not. To be truthful, if you ask me 100 times if I'd rather have Joel Zumaya and Curtis Granderson or Chris Young, El Duque Hernandez and Luis Vizcaino, I'd pick the Detroit deal 100 times.

However, here are the facts about the Vazquez deal.. He had a no-trade clause, which made it very difficult to find the proper match. The afforementioned Detroit deal was a done deal, and Javy blocked it. The list of teams he could be traded to was essentially limited, and Arizona had a small window of teams to work with. Getting one of Chicago's top prospects out of the deal made a potential messy situation stomachable.

As for the Glaus deal, I really don't know what to think at this point. On one hand, Miggy can immediately improve Arizona's closer position and allows another one or two years for Valverde to grow comfort in the role. He also can step in as the #3, #4 or #5 role in the rotation. Hudson has a tremendous glove, and the Middle IF defense should be solid. It also allows them to start Drew off in Tucson, see how he adjusts to AAA pitching, before rushing him up to the bigs.

I hate losing Glaus without getting a long term net return however. He is a routine 35 HR a year guy, and you can do far worse than Glaus in your 4 spot. Throwing Santos in makes me like it less.

However, the main thing to keep in mind is that Glaus still has the ability to block this deal. Im kind of hoping he does.

I gotta feeling Byrnes probably feels the same way but supposedly Vasquez invoked his limited trade clause to squash the deal, then Detroit denied even offering the deal. So who knows what really happened.

I'll give Byrnes and his gang the benefit of the doubt that they did go out and get the best deal possible that filled the needs they were looking to fill.

What? They are relatively better defensively? I'll give you Tejada but Manny!! His work ethic and defensive skills are highly more publicized than Glaus'. He is older and still will net Boston two high level prospects.

The overpaying Glaus part. We knew Glaus was a .250 hitter but the guy averages 30 HR's and like 80 RBI's a year. Everyone was happy to get him hello G Force, remember. Why did we sign him?

Develop a farm system ala the Indians. We only got one prospect in both deals not to mention we would be giving up one of our top ten prospects so it is a wash. A top ten prospect and a power hitting 3B for an average 2B and an aging P who we gave up on two years ago, WOW.

We could have had McCarthy because the Sox are rumored to be interested in moving Garland or McCarthy for prospects, imagine that. The guy we got (El Duque) had major shoulder problems the last two years, so he might not last a whole year.

We got the best deals. We did not have to trade Glaus or Vazquez so soon. So we don't know if we got the best deals.

It was said that the pirates made an effort to get Glaus but the deal was not better than Toronto's offer. I don't know what they offered, but it must have been something awful for the D'Backs to reject it so quickly.

Glaus Official-Press Conference 10 a.m. Tuesday

The Toronto Blue Jays have called a 10am et news conference for Tuesday where the team is expected to announce the acquisition of slugger Troy Glaus.

The Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks worked on a deal over the holidays that would send Glaus and a prospect to Toronto for Gold Glove second baseman Orlando Hudson and right-hander Miguel Batista.

The remaining work was believed to centre around financial considerations in Glaus's contract, as well as a physical for the 29-year-old third baseman. He has $32 million US and three years left on the $45-million, four-year deal he signed with Arizona last winter.

The Diamondbacks are due to save money in the trade as Batista is set to make $4.75 million in the final year of his deal while Hudson is expected to command about $2 million in salary arbitration. Glaus' contract also included a no-trade clause, which he had to waive, and reimbursements of up to $250,000 annually for personal business expenses.

The Glaus deal gives the Blue Jays the power threat they have been working feverishly to obtain this off-season, to complement the earlier acquisitions of starter A.J. Burnett, closer B.J. Ryan and first baseman Lyle Overbay.

Glaus hit .258 with 37 homers and 97 RBIs in 149 games for Arizona and has hit 29 or more homers five times during his eight major league seasons.

I am not too thrilled with this deal. I do not think it is horrible, but the players we recieve do not seem to fit in long term. We give up our best bargaining chip (along with another solid one in Sergio Santos) without filling either of our largest needs, which is a top of the rotation starter and solid pitching prospects. Toronto fans love Hudson, but I am not really sure why. He is obviously excellent defensively, but not much of a hitter. He is a decent player to have, but not really one that fits in long term with this team, especially considering the emergence of Drew and Upton. Im a Miguel Batista fan, but considering how much money he makes and how horrible of a second half he had last year, I do not think his trade value is very high at the moment. He is also 34 and an impending UFA, so he is not going to be around here for very long. Once again, a decent player (assuming he rebounds) but one that does not seem to fit in long term (nor does he seem to fit in with our "mid term" plans, meaning 2007ish). My biggest complaint is not with the quality of the players recieved in the deal, but that they will not contribute much after a year or two. We had much bigger holes to fill both long term and short term (the aforementioned top of the rotation starter and a solid pitching prospect), and we will not fill either while giving up our best bargaining chip. I am very disappointed that we were not able to come to a deal with Boston, which almost certainly been able to fill at least one of those holes.

Since this deal became official so quickly (press conference tomorrow), I am guessing that the Diamondbacks are not sending any cash as part of the deal, as that would require approval of the commissioners's office.

Well I don't know about this deal. I certainly don't like Glaus very much, and apparently most MLB GMs agree w/ me. Im sure its the best deal Byrnes could've got...maybe we shouldve waited until mid season when a few teams were desperate for some power.

I wish we would've recieved prospects in this trade instead of the "2 birds" we got, ah well.

Dumping salary and going after a better infield defensively. Are they going after Weaver? 2 ground ball pitchers would be nice, but I think he want's mega dough with Boras as his agent.

He's been in 2 great pitchers parks and stunk in both of them.

Please stay away, stay far far away from that guy.

I'd avoid Weaver. SP's this season are getting WAY to much. Burnett 11 million a season. Now Millwood 5 year/$60 million. COME ON!

Perhaps it isnt realistic, but I hope the Red Sox are the team that Glaus ended-up because it could bring them either Clement or Arroyo with some quality prospects...

There's NO WAY Boston is going to let go of Arroyo especially since the Damon fiasco...

Santos

I guess his stock has fallen. It seems like just a year ago he was one of our top 3 prospects.

Orlando Hudson Will Be Awesome For D-Backs

Toronto fans are going to miss him especially. This guy is a show-stopper and a half...he'll make his presence in the dugout known. You guys should be very happy you got O-Dawg. That's Orlando Hudson's nickname. THA O-DAWG, given by Jays fans, and more famously Harold Reynolds. Enjoy him while you can. We'll certainly enjoy Glaus.
