The Cardinals ran a scheme specifically for Vick and the Eagles. They were able to get it down in just one week. So what is up with this comment by Horton?

I just don't understand how a scheme can be so complex that it supposedly takes months of practice and half a season of games for players to get it yet the team can put in a special defense and have it work well in just one week.

Would like to hear from anyone who has coached football comment on this.

I think it has more to do with Acho and Scho replacing Porter.

It's because it is an assignment specific scheme that allows for adjustments to be made as a result of what the offense shows. In my understanding, the scheme is like NFL wide receivers routes where they are varied depending on what the defense shows. So we may start out in one defense, but if the offense shows something else, the defense will adjust to that and change all while showing the QB an entirely different look.

Special defenses are generally easier to install because they are simpler in design because they are focused on doing one specific thing rather than a bunch of different things.

Not me. The defense just need(s/ed) a catalyic playmaker that opposing coordinators need(ed) to worry about. It's possible that Daryl Washington is growing into that role, along with support from Acho and Schofield. Horton thinks that Paris Lenon is having a special year; I disagree with him, but he knows what Lenon is supposed to be doing, I suppose.

I'd probably add TE to that list of needs, and I'd probably take off WR2 if the TE position gets fixed and we get a legit QB.

This is a defense that you can win games with--maybe one you could win a division with. The offense is flat-out awful, and that's supposed to be the specialty of the coaching staff. How embarrassing.

I think that if we upgrade both the offensive line and WR2 positions that QB becomes less of a need. I think Kolb will be able to execute given time and weapons, what I'm not sure about is his ability to execute without those things (which top QB's can do).

He has time. Skelton's tenure under center has illustrated that. Kolb can't succeed because he's too busy locating the defensive pass rush and scrambling directly toward it.

You could just as easily say the same thing about Skelton if he has the weapons. The offensive philosophy remains the biggest problem, even ahead of personnel.

Look around the NFL, and it's becoming more and more apparent that having a good TE obviates the need for the 80 reception, 850 yard #2 WR in the T.J. Houshmanzadeh role.

I meant time in the pocket. So protect Kolb and give him weapons, and I think that he can win games. I'm not that Skelton can do that as he seems to air mail too many passes when he is standing clean in the pocket.

I think that Housler has enough ability to fill that role, but what I don't see is a vertical threat that can keep the safeties back. Even New England is finding out that a TE can't really do that. We need to find WRs to pressure defenses vertically so we can create space for our TEs and Fitz. I would like to take an OL in the first because I believe in the need to protect your QB, but if Kalil is gone and we don't trade back, I can see why we would take a guy like Blackmon.

Knowing the Cards they'll take the ILB from Arizona State to make up for not taking Suggs.

All I know about him is that he has an unusual name. We could really use an upgrade at ILB. Does the ASU kid project to Lenons spot?

Speaking of kids. With Schofield and Acho instead of Haggans and Porter the Cards defense becomes 21 years younger. Look at all the Bad Boy Baby Birds:

Calais Cambell 25, Dan Williams 24, Carter 24, DWash 25, PPi 21, AJeff 23,Toler 26, Rashad 25, Acho 23, and Schofield 24.

Cards are 23 out of 32. If Chefs give up more than 18 tonight Cards can move up one. If Pats give up more than 36, Cards can also move up.

Note: Bye weeks are over now. All teams have played 10 games after tonight.

New England doesn't have a WR of Larry Fitzgerald's caliber. In combination with a developed Housler, will keep safeties back.

But if Whis keeps calling passes when D is playing 7 in the box, it won't matter.

Vontaze is his name, and he'd be much better served staying another year in college. Considering the expectations and hype, he's had an awful year and is definitely not worth a first round pick.

After tonight Cards probably move up to 21st in points allowed

22nd. -4 on the Broncos -9 on the Chiefs

Current ranking of our remaining opponents in points scored:

Dallas 8, SF 9th, Cleveland 28th, Bengals 12, and Seattle 28th.

So the Cards will hold Dallas,SF, and Cincy to 17 points or less and let Browns and Seahawks score 30.

;)

What a great defense this is turning into. It doesnt get easier with the 9er's coming to town after winning the division and Gore running like he is.. But this would be a good win coming up to see if we are ready to take the west back. Great Defense though.

I recall tackling being an issue earlier in the year. But over the last several games, its seems this defense, especially the front seven, has been doing a good job of limiting yards after contact.

So why didn't the Cowboys run another play to get their kicker in range? Well according to their HC, he was scared of losing yards on another play.

You see so many situations where you have negative plays in those situations.

That is the highest compliment I can think for for Ray Horton's defense. He thought the risk of running another play against us outweighed the potential reward.

Bottom line, our D was in Jason Garrett's head.

I'm a little bit down off of the high I was on yesterday after the win, and though I'm still really pumped about the young playmakers we have on defense, we do need more. IMO, we still need two linebackers and a strong safety to make this a great defense. We need an incredible thumper to start in the middle and make Lenon a really good rotational guy. We need an elite pass-rusher to make Schofield and Acho incredible complements on the other side, as well as rotational pass rushers. And we need that SS to replace Wilson, who cannot have much longer.

This defense has stepped up in the past couple of weeks and Ive been very impressed. But we still need a number of guys to really step into the elite realm of the Packers, Broncos, 49ers.

First and foremost, and what is no secret to us, we need a pass rsuher. Not just any, a stud. Packers have Clay, 49ers have Aldon and Smith, Broncos have Elvis and Von Miller. Problem is, they dont comes around very often. Guys like Demarcus Ware are unique. Von Miller is 1 in a million, a rookie who can come in and immediatley dominate his rookie year.

Not only that, but we need 2 pass rushers. 1 isnt enough anymore. 1 elite guy, Acho/OBS will be the #2 guy, and CC will be supplemental. We need guys who put up 12-14 sacks. As a 3-4 DE, CC will never come close. Still, we keep him for ability on the line. Theres a few good prospects in the draft. Whitney Mercilius who most of you know of by now would be the #1 option. He will be a stud. I dont think he'll fall to hus in the teens. After him, a guy like Zach Brown wouldnt be a bad choice. Hes very undersized (only in the 220s), but hes very fast and flexible around the Tackles. Be really cool to have Him and Washington. 2 sideline-to-sideline speed LBs would make us a very dynamic defense. But again, Whitney is the real prize.

We need ADubs replacement. Hes been playing very well this year. Incredible turnaround from last year. His hangup has always been coverage, but hes dont great this season. Kind of feel like id like to switch it up and go after more of a ballhawk SS, rather than a 5th lnebacker, as ADub is now basically. Slightly smaller guy than Adub who can still hit guys and make plays at the line, but strikes fear into QBs more in coverage. With a SS,FS, and 2 stud CB's, our pass D would become elite.

On that note, we need a #2 CB. Practically need 2 #1's nowadays. Jefferson, while I never believed in him in the first place, just cant hang. Marshall and Adams are simply too small. Toler is a career #2-3 guy. Guys act like this season wouldve been different had we had Toler but forget if we still had DRC, Toler would be #3 behind PP. I look to the draft for one. IMO, if we cant get the OLB we want in the 1st, and I rather not reach on a LT, Id like to spend our 1st round pick on one of the CBs available this year. Its a consideraly deep class. While of course everyone wants Claiborne (and a Claiborne/PP LSU connection would be sick), theres still guys ranked as the 3rd/4th best CB who would come here and be an upgrade.

I think we're solid otherwise. Bradley will someday be a great MLB for us, though I dont know when. Once we get that elite OLB, we'll be solid there. Entire O line stays. All of them. DD,CC,DW,Eason,Carter,Vonnie. Great crew. They all make plays.
