Lol I read the Newcastle social media feed. Some Fans were loving the lineup others hating his lineup. A couple fans were glad to see yedlin out because he goes forward too much. They must enjoy winning the championship table....

I wonder why anyone would have hated the lineup, unless they wanted to field a weak team in the cup? They have a whole week to recover, though, so I'm good with it. Losing this cup tie at home would have been disastrous for team and fan morale heading into a home game with Swansea, so I'm glad Rafa went for (and won) it.

For the game, I believe he had four free and clear shots in the penalty area: 3 free headers from 5 yards and a free strike from just beyond the spot. The results: one weak header for a save, one howler miss of an open net, one idiotic offside that struck a goal from the board, and one shot pulled wide of the post. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

And I'll point the finger at Rafa Benitez for the second half. That was gutless managing there. Swans totally deserved the three points. Aside from a surge in response to the goal, and a truly lucky bounce/fluky equalizing goal, they 100 percent outplayed Newcastle. Rafa in negative tactics, pulling back, refusing to unleash the team to attack Swansea, NOT GOING FOR IT AT HOME AGAINST THE BOTTOM EFFING TEAM! Gutless, unforgivable, and he should effing well be ashamed and apologize for not going for it at home. That's a disgrace, and a big middle finger to the home fans.

No reason Newcastle shouldn't have won, even with Gayle sucking so badly, if Benitez had just been willing to go for it. Thank Christ there are still buffer teams between Newcastle and the bottom 3.

I agree it should have been over at the half. I noticed the same issues about Gayle. I guess no need to repeat his failed chances. Diame and Perez also had clear chances if I recall. And when Swansea scores first on what initially looked to be a prayer kicked into the box...that’s always a bad sign.

Major bad news. Jabba the Ashley has walked away from the table in the takeover talks. Rafa still has no transfer budget, halfway through the window. Glued to the bottom of the table. What a crap show.

Well, results went pretty good for the Mags. I kind of won't mind if--okay, when--Rafa parks the bus here. They have a -10 goal difference, which is sterling, compared to other relegation rivals. Another point, if you will. Brighton and Palace learned some hard lessons today that sometimes playing positive soccer against the big teams really hurts you. I absolutely hate, hate, HATE to say this, but a 1-0 loss isn't a bad result here. It isn't a positive result, but it won't blow up the goal difference.

God, does the Premier League ever need something to level the playing field financially. Financial fair play is a joke. And God, does Jabba the Ashley need to go.

It's so weird to be proud of your team when they lose 3-1, but if either Manquillo doesn't make that stupid penalty foul, or Newcastle punishes the keeper by scoring, they manage to grab a point out of an all but unwinnable game. Great goal by Murphy. HUGE defensive resolve in a situation that could get disheartening so very fast. Would have liked to hold it to only a -1 on goal differential, but -2 doesn't kill GD, or morale. I mean, if you (a team with a Championship squad like Newcastle) do anything but try to hit on the counter, you're going to get SHREDDED against Man City. The quality of their passing was insane, and they were on their game. Disconcerted them in the 2nd half through some pressing, but that opened up gaps in the defense. Glad Rafa allowed them to go attack, even down 3-1.

My only negative is this question: What the hell does Merino need to do to get on the pitch? Why is he in the dog house all of a sudden?

They want to sell him but they had an absurd 35M price on him. A couple places said they wanted him on a loan, but those are falling through. Apparently L'Pool want 1M and the team to cover his $130k in wages or whatever it is. They have an 18M evaluation on him now. They appear pretty desperate to let him go.

Oh, trust me, it's HORRIFIC for Newcastle. The relegation squad has added Kenedy on loan. That's IT. He should help a bit in defense and on the wing, but the #1 problem is a STRIKER. Jabba the Ashley was said to have 'sanctioned a club-record fee' for a top striker. What a freaking joke. One week on and two absolutely derisory (and non-record breaking) bids later, they were given a 6pm Monday deadline to sign Jorgenson from Feyenoord. Failed. The Ashley PR machine strikes again!

They lost Sturridge to ALAN freaking PARDEW and West Brom at the last second--because the kid has family in Birmingham. Alan freaking Pardew, a craptastic coach, on a relegation rival, stole a striker, OUR MOST DESPERATE NEED, out from under us. Not only could that see Newcastle relegated, it is a massive punch to the collective fan base's nuts.

The only other two deals that even sound remotely possible is a loan for that failed Man City center back (WTF kind of deal is that? NOT the area of need!) and a deal for some Eastern-European keeper I've never heard of. NEITHER are positions of great need; we have CBs, and Elliot and Darlow are adequate for purposes. While it would be nice to send Woodman out on loan to help him develop, he can sit his ass on the bench and provide 3rd-string cover for them. The relegation fight comes first, above everything else. Who gives a damn that we lost to Chelsea in the FA cup? It's no surprise, we didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning it, and it saves this paper-thin Championship squad having to play extra games.

With what the teams around them in the table are doing, and the absolute shambles Newcastle are at scoring goals, if Jabba the Asshat Ashley doesn't open the ********* pocket book in the next few days, Newcastle will 100 freaking percent be back in the Championship next season. Because, if Kenedy is the only incoming in January, and if we don't get a decent striker in, Benitez is freaking GONE. And who in the hell would blame him?

Jabba the Ashley promised backing, after winning the Championship, that Benitez would get every penny of profit generated. He walked before a TV camera and made the verbal promise LIVE. He just can't freaking help himself from being a big fat liar, in the limelight, no less (and the British press ignore it completely, or lap up his ********--EVERY TIME). We've thus far, in TWO windows, had a net spend of 17 million. SEVENTEEN freaking MILLION!!!

LIES, freaking LIES!!! And now his lies and parsimony are going to fudge up any hope of a sale, because who wants to buy a Championship team for 350 million pounds?

Sorry, I had to get that out. Outside of one soccer buddy I haven't seen in a while, this is my only place to vent. And it is absolute hell being a Newcastle fan under that freaking oxygen thief Jabba the Ashley.

The only way Newcastle stay up (unless three of the other bottom dwellers also implode) is, if Benitez is finally forced to turn to Mitrovic, he becomes a revelation. Because, let's face it--neither Gayle or Joselu are getting it done. Okay, maybe if Kenedy turns out to be a goal machine too lol But, seriously, given how unlikely any of that is...there they go, back to the Championship.

Well, what a day it's been (and what a day it'll end up, too, I'm sure). Kenedy is electric. Hit the post, won a penalty (thanks a LOT, Joselu, you effing suckwad!), and put in the corner that Lascelles smashed home. Of course, useless Joselu cost us the victory twice over, missing the penalty and missing a gimme late, so of course Burnley scored an 85th-minute equalizer. Still an important point, but JESUS JOSELU!!!

Sounds like the Mags have reinforcements coming in, but I'm not jinxing ANYTHING!

Possibly the best thing I've seen all day is the sign setup before the game at SJP. Classy, classy fan gesture.

Slimani in is HUGE. If he plays just decent as a striker, Newcastle probably stay up, given the Kenedy addition as well. That's two excellent offensive additions, which is where the team are lacking. With Lascelles in the lineup, they have a solid defensive record--and Kenedy helps a bit there, too, as wing back.

Dubravka in allows Woodman to go out on loan, which is crucial for his development. And it gives us a keeper who can supposedly distribute the frickin' ball. Darlow and Elliot are fine at saves, but this side is crying out for good keeper distribution.

Mitrovic's loan move to Anderlecth fell through, but Fulham somehow swooped to get him on loan at the eleventh hour. Good business for both clubs.

And Colback is finally out of here, at least for the rest of the season! Loaned to Forest, I think it was. God, do I hope his contract is up after this season! What an albatross he's been.

So, considering this business, I think Newcastle did enough...BARELY...to give Benitez what he needs to keep them up in the Premier League. And, just as good, it looks like Ashley is still looking to sell. Everything was a loan move, which points to that.

So...whew! Newcastle actually did okay on deadline day for once.
