That was a grueling win to watch. I know, that's a weird thing to say. Swansea are tough at home, of course, but they had to have had 3/4 of the possession for the game. What they DIDN'T have was Papisse Cisse. Man, what a striker. His second goal has to be one of the best of the season for any team in the Premiership.

Europe is in reach. A Champion's League spot is still in reach, but I don't think we'll manage to get it. We have a tough schedule on the run in. Fifth is within our grasp, though, IMO.

Man City really disappointed me. They were supposed to help by beating Arsenal! Nah, we have no shot of catching up Arsenal. Chelsea (level on points) and Tottenham, yes, but not Arsenal. Kudos to Sunderland for helping us out, but I wish they had beaten Spurs. Chelsea got a gifted cheat of a goal (offsides by about two yards), so should have only drawn. That was really disappointing, and massively unfair to Wigan, and it did hurt Newcastle as well. Wigan should have been 1-0 up when Chelsea scored in extra time.

Ah well. My team is in cracking form, we're level on points for fifth place, and we have Bolton tomorrow. Good stuff.

Norwich just beat Spurs at White Hart Lane. Did you guys a huge favor, and Arsenal too.

Yeah, Spurs are in a tailspin, and I hail the Canaries for their help. Arsenal is a lock for 3rd spot, IMO. I'd love to get 4th spot and the Champions League qualifying spot, but I'd definitely settle for 5th and the Europa. It'll be tough, though. As long as Spurs continue to stink, we'll get one of the two, but Chelsea aren't dropping many points.

Isn't the 4th spot a qualifying shot at the Champions League? I thought only the first 3 spots were a lock, and the 4th spot had to go into a qualifying tourney???

...I wish I'd said that :D It's still European football, and a step up from the Europa. I'm not certain, but those that don't qualify/get knocked out of the Champions league may fall down into the Europa league. I'm REALLY uncertain on that, though. As a fan, I just haven't had exposure to European football with my team lol

Yeah, it appears to be really convoluted....

UEFA said:
The teams who occupy the top three league places in the countries ranked 1 to 3 in UEFA competition gain automatic entry into the group stages for the following season’s Champions League competition. The first and second placed teams in the countries ranked 4 to 6 also gain automatic entry, as do the champions in the countries ranked 7 to 12. The Champions League holders automatically get the chance to defend their title in the following season’s competition.................

I do know that the 3rd place team of the Champions League group stage goes to the Europa League.

This is correct. Arsenal finished 4th last season and had to play a 2-leg qualifier against Udinese in August to get into the Champions League. Arsenal won and Udinese went to the Europa League.

Kinda figured it went like that, or that Champs League qualifying spot would be far less valuable.

After the results today you have a good chance at top 4. Spurs are imploding and Chelsea are running out of time.

Arsenal are 3 points ahead for 3rd but Newcastle have a game in hand. Arsenal have the easier run in on paper. It's going to be close.

Problem for us is that you guys have Stoke, Norwich and West Brom left. We have Wigan, Man City, Chelsea and Everton left. You have by far the easier schedule, although the loss of Arteta seems to be crucial. Newcastle really need Man U. to win that game next week, so Newcastle's game against Man City is pointless for them. If they're fighting for the title, I think they come out blazing. If Man City is already eliminated or functionally eliminated, I think they'll be flat.

Any way you slice it, it's going to be a great run-in.

Seems like it's all gone bad for us since last Tuesday. Chelsea miraculously win, we get blindsided by an in-form Wigan (striking the post twice in the 2nd), Spurs and Chelsea both win, and then Man City wins to go in pole position for the title. The last sucks because...guess who we play this weekend? Man City, raring to go and needing to win to help secure the title. Yikes!

Oh well. Go Toon! We're guaranteed European football one way or another, so I can't be anything but thrilled with the season we've had. And who knows? We play Man City at home, so we may just ruin their season!

What a win! What an incredible win! First victory for Pards in London, and it gives us something like 11 points in 12 matches against the top clubs (they said it on TV, I might have it wrong). Fantastic win! And Cisse's brace, with the second probably the best goal I've ever seen...ever...wow!!! Now Chelsea have to win in Munich to get to the Champions League.

Unfortunately and predictably, Spurs just won, so we're still in 5th. We probably won't beat them to the spot, since we have a much more difficult two games, but I just can't be done right now. Rock on Toon!!!

Tough, tough result, but Newcastle don't have a reason to complain. They lost the game to an incredible, beautiful shot that was well defended, but that was taken even better. Of course we gave up the second throwing everything but the kitchen sink forward. We played a great game and it just wasn't there for us--we lost to the Champions, after all. What are the chances they drop points to QPR anyway?

Still, a win at Everton may get us into the Champions league. A Newcastle victory combined with an Arsenal loss and a Tottenham loss or draw puts us in 3rd place. A Newcastle victory and a Tottenham loss or draw puts us in 4th, with a spot if Chelsea lose in Munich. Granted, Everton will be a tough match at Craven Cottage, and Arsenal only have West Brum away and Tottenham only have Fulham at home (though that fixture gives a bit of hope). Still, Newcastle can manage it, given the right results. Fight on, Toon!

Great opening to the season for the Magpies! Spurs really deserved a point from the game, to be fair, but a big, big goal from Demba Ba, and some of that football magic from Hatem Ben Arfa sealed the deal for us. Pardew had a real bonehead moment when he put his hand on a linesman and gave him a little shove after a horrendous non-call, but has immediately apologized and admitted his stupidity. He'll definitely be fined, but may pick up a touchline ban, which would really suck.

Anyway, first win over Spurs in quite some time, a massive start to the season, and a big step in the right direction in making our home pitch a fortress. Now lets go Greek and pound Atrimos (sp?) to get started in our European push.

First year in 6 above us and you think you have cracked it.

Come back when you have won the league as much as us, up until that point...mind the gap ;).

Great win for you, some goal by Ba, desevered the 3 points for that alone. Pardew really is classless by the way. See him leaping about against us and trying to fight MON for form. Bonehead is about right.

Hey, you're dragging comments from last season into this season! No fair...although there is a gap already ;) I can get back to you right now, too, because we have won as many Premier League titles as you lot...0 lol

Eh, I won't call Pardew classless overall. Hotheaded, yes, but not classless. And basically you can't blame either manager for what happens in a Newcastle-Sunderland derby lol

Held the home team to a 1-1 draw away in Greece, with a young side with 9 changes to the lineup. Works for me. With the Chelsea game tomorrow, we had to start a different squad. Handed a youngster some time--youngest player we've ever played in Europe. We get them next Thursday at home, and should seal the deal.
