Thanks for the video links by the way. I know there was speculation that Brown would be the RB that the Cardinals would take because of how the draft was predicted to play out but watching the highlight reel that was also on the Wells YouTube page, made me even more excited about Wells.
Wells seemed to be breaking tackles and in general running in what looked like NFL-like situations. Obviously no NCAA team is going to compare to an NFL team but his reel looked like what would be seen in the NFL. And the stiff-arms! He wasn't just keeping players at bay, he was de-cleating them and then rumbling down the field. Wow. His game certainly looks like it will translate into solid production in the NFL. And that was the 2008 clip that I saw that stuff.
Brown was running against Buffalo and had some nice long runs but it didn't look like anything he would ever see in the NFL. He wasn't being touched for 8+ yards and went down on first contact quite a bit. He certainly looks fast but even in the highlight reel he had an untouched burst into the secondary and got caught from behind. I guess there's always someone faster but if his game is speed it seems like an indictment to be caught from behind like that in a clear footrace situation. In the NFL, every db is going to be faster than whoever that Buffalo college defender was.
I really don't know much about Brown but he looks like a speed guy so please correct me if I'm wrong. He certainly doesn't look like a power guy to me but in either case, he didn't seem to make many defenders miss in that highlight reel. It's a small sample size of course but that cuts both ways. If he isn't making guys miss in these plays that are highlights, it makes me wonder about the rest of the time. Even in the 2008 reel of Wells, where he clearly isn't planting his feet as well as in 2007, he's still not being stopped by the first defender.
It seemed pretty clear to me that there is a noticeable difference between Wells and Brown and I think the Cardinals got a very Peterson-like steal because Wells was dinged in 2008 and operating with a less than stellar supporting cast. If anything, it seems to have given us a look at what he might actually do against NFL type competition. Being somewhat slowed and having a line that wasn't USC-esque in terms of completely outclassing the competition, not to mention a relatively predictable offense that defenses stacked against the run make this a, IMO, safe pick if nothing else.
