Cardinals First Round Pick - Chris "Beanie" Wells

WOW.... Amazing that he was still there.

Overview Wells' size, strength, vision, balance and acceleration provides a very rare combination. Talent, however, does not necessarily translate into production, which is the dilemma facing every NFL team with an opportunity to draft Wells this April.

The top prep running back in the country, Wells signed with Ohio State and enjoyed immediate success despite sharing the workload, rushing for 576 yards and seven touchdowns despite no starts. He emerged as a dominant force a year later, earning All-American and consensus first-team All-Big Ten honors with an eye-popping 1,609 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in his first season as a starter.

A foot injury against Youngstown State robbed Wells of a chance for greater success in 2008, but he still earned second-team accolades after rushing for another 1,197 yards in only 10 games. Had an arm span of 33 5/8 inches and a hand span of 10 inches at the combine.

High School 2006 Parade All-American and named the nation's top running back ... Rushed for 2,134 yards and 27 touchdowns on 223 carries as a senior (9.6 avg.) ... Rushed for 1,939 yards and scored 20 touchdowns as a junior ... Named the 2005 National Player of the Year and the No. 1 prospect in the nation by several publications ... Scored three TDs on his way to being selected Most Valuable Player of the U.S. Army All-America Bowl, a game in which his East squad and coach Ted Ginn Sr. won 27-16.

Analysis
Positives: Extraordinary combination of size and natural running ability. Downhill runner who attacks the line of scrimmage when running inside. Shows the patience to pick and slide laterally. Good burst to and through the hole. Despite his height, generally runs with good pad level, giving defenders little to target other than his knees and shoulder pads. Rare size and leg drive to move the pile. Rare vision and lateral quickness for a back of his size. Anticipates the cutback lanes before they appear and capitalizes on them. Surprising acceleration to break through the first wave of the defense and get to the second level. Brutal stiff-arm when in the open field to bat away defenders attempting to drag him down. Despite his size, shows good breakaway speed. Final nine touchdowns against BCS opponents traveled an average of 32 yards. Good size and strength as a pass blocker. Despite his struggles with durability, some close to the program characterize him as being a tough player willing to play through pain.

Negatives: Primary concern -- and the only one that will keep him from being a top 10 pick -- is Wells' struggles with durability. Fought nagging injuries throughout much of his career at Ohio State and some have questioned whether he knows the difference between pain and injury. Sat out three full games and parts of several others (including the 2009 Fiesta Bowl -- his final game in a Buckeye uniform) with foot, hamstring and head (concussion) injuries. May lack natural hands for the reception. Has only caught 15 passes for 84 career yards and too often double-clutches. Inconsistent effort as a blocker.

NFL Network says he's exactly like Hightower, which makes it too redundant.

WAY better than Hightower.

But in the end.... I will be watching Maualuga closely. I love that guys game.

If Pittsburgh takes him I might cry.

It is inconceivable he was still on the board. Ignore all the stuff about durability and "can't catch the ball." This was a great pick.

Nice. I like this pick.

But I refuse to call him.......Beanie. Chris Wells.

He has the measurables to be the end of the game, run down the clock type guy we are looking for.

I cannot wait to hear the debate on this board about this guy since I don't know too much about him besides your general draft knowledge.

I hope we go pass rush in the 2nd. Clint Sintim or Connor Barwin ?

Nothing against Hightower, but he was 4th round talent at best. Wells is early to mid 1st round talent. There is no comparison here, other than whether Wells can stay relatively healthy. Wells is special!!!!!!!!!!!

Solid pick. Will play behind Tim. May take a year to get going. His only draw back is injuries which he seams to have overcome. Best yet Q is here!

His drawback is that he's soft.

I could not believe he fell to us thought he would go earlier. I think he will be the opening day starter. Great pick.
