Celebrate the 4th at Hohokam

The Mesa Miners have partnered up with the “Packages from Home” program to celebrate Independence Day and help our troops overseas. This will be one part of the Miners July 4th game that also includes a post-game FIREWORKS extravaganza and an American Flag give-a-way.

The “Packages from Home” program is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping our men and women in the military by providing them with many items such as non-perishable food, personal toiletries, books, CD’s, and DVD’s. All items are donated by local citizens to the organization who then sends them out to the U.S. servicemen and servicewomen overseas.

On July 4th, any fan that brings a non-perishable item to the Mesa Miners game at HoHoKam Park will receive $4.00 off any priced ticket. All the items donated by the fans will be collected by “Packages from Home” to be shipped to our troops.

In addition to the fireworks extravaganza, all fans entering the game will receive a free American flag courtesy of ABC Plumbing & Rooter Co., Inc.

For those wanting to find out more on the “Packages from Home” program, their website at www.packagesfromhome.org provides detailed information on donation needs, donation centers, and how to volunteer.

Recap from the 4th - it was a blast, as always:

The Mesa Miners (24-13) had a lot to celebrate on Independence Day. Not only did their 6-3 victory of the Yuma Scorpions (20-16) increase their division lead to a season high 3.5 games, they also turned the Golden Baseball League’s first triple play.

The triple play occurred in the top of the fifth inning when the Scorpions loaded the bases off of Mesa starter Manny Ayala. Jason Dewey hit a deep fly ball to right center that was caught by Adam Bonner on the run. Bonner made a perfect throw to second base to Cleatus Davidson who tagged the base for the second out. Davidson then threw the ball to third base where Michael Done completed the triple play.

Dewey earlier hit a solo home run in the first inning to give the Scorpions a 1-0 lead. The Miners came right back in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1 when they scored a run on no hits. Done was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Davidson. The Miners scored three more runs in the second with a 2-run double by Paul Powell and an RBI single by Caleb Maher. Maher later added a 2-run home run in the seventh to extend the lead to 6-2. Maher continues to lead the GBL in home runs with 8.

20-year old Ayala (6-2) earned the win by giving up two runs on nine hits in eight innings. Starting pitcher for Yuma, Dane DeLaRosa (1-1), took the loss.

The Miners will continue their four game series against the Scorpions Tuesday at 6:35 pm at HoHoKam Park. The scheduled starters are Jon Uhl (3-10) for Mesa and Rusty Meacham (2-2) for Yuma.

:fans:

Great game with an awesome fireworks show !!

Wow, first really ugly loss.

A 10-run 3rd inning for Yuma, which was prolonged by a terrible call at first base. Paul Powell had to reach for a ball, taking his foot off the bag, but he got his foot on the bag well before the runner got there - but the ump motioned safe, and the other ump refused to get involved. I thought Les was going to get tossed, because the same ump had called one of our players out at 2nd when he clearly touched the base before the Yuma player made the tag. The same ump (#50) ended one of our innings prematurely and then extended theirs by a bad call at first.

Had the ump made the correct call at first base, we'd have ended the inning down only 3-0. That call kept the inning going and it got ugly...10 runs before it was over. :bang:

We're 5-5 vs. Yuma, but we're still in first place of the Az Division and just behind San Diego overall.

We wrap up the series against Yuma tomorrow night and then it's Friday night - Rickey Henderson bobbleheads, $1 hot dogs, and people bringing their dogs to the park!!

Go Miners !!!

Friday is gonna be great. I just gave my schnauzer the worst haircut ever. Picture Ivan Drago, but a dog. He could win the ugliest dog contest, unfortunately. Rickey Henderson. Wouldn't miss it for the world.

Tough loss to the Dawgs last night, 7-3.

Hopefully we'll get them back tonight.

Rickey worshippers were everywhere last night. He had what - two walks, no steals, and 2 or 3 pop-ups for outs? :D

It was cool to have all of the dogs at the park. Nice promotion.

C'mon Miners !!!

Sunday night is Faith Night at the park.

A local congregation is holding their church service at the stadium before the game, having Les Lancaster speak, etc. Their 30 member choir is going to do the national anthem, someone from the church will throw the first pitch, etc.

We beat Long Beach tonight.

Next game - Tuesday ... 12 noon ...

BIM's going to represent !!

Can't wait to hear what the temp is at first pitch. It was 111 tonight. Good thing the heat doesn't get to BIM and Mrs. BIM like it does some people. (If you can't stand the heat - move. This is Az. :D )

Yeah, I've been thinking of moving to Mesa (my sister-in-law lives there) just to get out of this Yuma heat! It feels so much cooler in Mesa. :D

Great game!

Miners won 11-9 in a 3.5 hour shootout which had 28 hits between the
two teams.

BIM drank water and stayed in the front row, near first base, the entire game.

Shade? HA! I laugh at shade. :D

After the game I had the entire team sign a ball for my wife (she had to work and couldn't go to the game).

Go Miners !!
