Bocanegra downgrades clubs for €500,000 transfer fee

Saint-Etienne has completed the signing of US defender Carlos Bocanegra from fellow French club Stade Rennais.

Neither the length of the contract nor the transfer fee has been disclosed yet, but France Football reports that an amount in the region of €500,000 has been exchanged between the two clubs.

That sucks

Not a downgrade so far. Saint-Etienne in first place after 7 matches.

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea is set to join Manchester United, with Sir Alex Ferguson confirming that the young Spaniard will be Edwin van der Sar's replacement.
De Gea, 20, has been Atletico's first-choice custodian for the past two years after progressing through the club's youth team and has starred for the Rojiblancos since making his debut in 2009.

Juventus have confirmed that they have completed the signing of AC Milan playmaker Andrea Pirlo on a free transfer.

Pirlo, 32, has been one of Milan's most consistent performers for the past decade, helping them win two Champions League titles. He also won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, playing a key role in the Azzurri's triumph.

Good stuff on all the info, Shzm. How do you embed stories like that?

Hey, does anyone know anything about Lens midfielder Mehdi Abeid? A couple of big teams in Europe were chasing him, and Newcastle managed to sign him. It sounds like a really positive signing, but I personally haven't heard of him. Thoughts?

Also, I was very discouraged that Barton will not get a new deal. He'll be with us for the coming season, unless he's sold, but after talks with his agent it was decided not to offer him a new deal. I think they were probably asking for the moon.

The Magpies did lose out on signing a young striker this week, Juan Albin:

"We are talking with Barcelona and Rossi would love to play for the club," he told AS. "His price-tag is between €25 million and €30 million. We are now waiting for news from Barca."

Has a US-born player, played for Barcelona before?

I am pretty sure the answer is no, as far as I know the first US born player to play in Spain was Tab Ramos with Real Betis and we didn't see another there until Altidore.

This one's on Nolan, IMO. The team didn't want him for forever--he has 2 years left on his contract, and they offered him a 2-year extension. He wanted a 5-year extension--7 more years. I sure in the heck wouldn't have given it to him! Sad to see him go, but we seem to be chasing a lot of quality midfielders, and already have Cabaye in the bag.

The Daily Star claim that United will tempt Spurs with an offer of around £18 million, plus Premier League topscorer Dimitar Berbatov, in the hope of striking a deal.

This has to be the steal of the summer. Ba scored 7 goals in 13 games for the relegated Hammers. That's an incredible pace for a striker on a team that went down, and it sure isn't his fault they did. And, thanks to an out clause in his contract with West Ham, we got him for free because they were relegated.

I know a couple of other Premiership teams really wanted him (I think Sunderland were among them, but I haven't really kept track. We just got a great deal for a quality striker. Now go and get more reinforcements!

Newcastle have completed the signing of former West Ham frontman Demba Ba on a three-year deal.

The 26-year-old's move to St James' Park on a free transfer was rubber-stamped this afternoon, the Premier League club have confirmed.

The arrival of Ba, who scored seven times in 13 appearances for the Hammers during the second half of last season, comes 24 hours after Magpies skipper Kevin Nolan headed for Upton Park in a deal believed to be worth in the region of £4million.

Manager Alan Pardew told Newcastle's official website: "Demba made a great impression with West Ham last season and is a great signing for this club.

"He has pace, excellent technical ability, is good in the air and, it goes without saying, has the ability to consistently find the back of the net.

"Moreover, he has a great passion to play for Newcastle United."

Toon Beat Liverpool, Sign Sylviain Marveaux

I don't really know much about this French midfielder, but Liverpool wanted him, we stole him, and it was on a Bosman Free Transfer. Can't go wrong there, eh?

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11678_6994869,00.html

Newcastle United have beaten Liverpool to the signing of French midfielder Sylvain Marveaux.

The 25-year-old had appeared on course to sign for the Anfield club on a Bosman free transfer.

But now Newcastle have nipped in to poach Marveaux and offer him a five-year deal, which he has accepted.

The left-sided midfielder has been on Tyneside to finalise the move, which will shock Liverpool, who had presumed they had his signature in the bag.

Newcastle looked at Marveaux earlier in the year, but it was presumed they had given up when Liverpool made their move.

Marveaux is now set to become Newcastle's third signing of the summer, and he is the third French-born player to join following on from Yohan Cabaye and Demba Ba.
Delight

"It's a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs," said Toon chief Alan Pardew.

"He may not be well known to many of our fans but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time.

"It's been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front."

Reports emerged on Friday that Marveaux had failed his medical at Anfield, but he confirmed this was not the case.

"I do not want to go into details, but I did not sign for Liverpool because there was a contractual disagreement between the parties Thursday night," he confirmed to L'Equipe.

The mags are basicall getting shot of their older higher earners and replacing them with cheap or free youngsters/players who can't pass a medical. Very risky but if it pays off will be building a good young squad for years to come.

We are yet to dip our toe. It also looks like uncle Ellis wants us to be self sufficient. Can't see many big names coming in but some some solid squad players.

The can't pass a medical knock is rubbish. Ba supposedly couldn't pass a medical in January, but he did pass one for the Hammers, and scored like gangbusters. Marveaux has completely rubbished talk that he didn't pass a medical, and it sounds like the big club that lost out on him has some sour grapes. It was a contract snag that caused him to turn to Newcastle, and we say, thanks! Also, Cabaye has no medical concerns.

Nolan was angry because he basically wanted SEVEN years...already had two, and wanted a 5-yr extension. Nagannahappen! Barton's already making an obscene amount of money, wants more, and wants a longer contract than we want to give. Just no sense in locking down older players.

The good thing is, we brought in three quality players, and it cost us 5 million pounds thus far. Ba and Marveaux came in on free transfers. We got 4 for Nolan. We could still spend 34 million pounds, and still not be dipping any further than what we sold Nolan and Carroll for. Nice!

You didnt steal him at all, he failed his medical and we refused to sign him for the money he wanted, go ahead and check his previous injury history, you will be lucky if he plays 15 games a season.

Which has been vehemently refuted...contract issues, not a failed medical. Last year he had problems...the year before, a good tally of goals for a midfielder.

Nolan wanted a 5 year contrac not 5 tacked on. Ba failed a medical at Stoke last year and ended up at the Hammers as they had to take a risk to try and stay up. Re Marv I only know what I rea and that is that he failed a medical at Liverpool and hasn't played since November. Like I say risky plan. Nolan will be loss no matter what you say. It's a tough league and he got stuck in when needed.

The other lad looks like a quality player the bits I have seen.

Liverpool Doc Admits Newcastle Signing Marveaux Passed Medical

http://www.tribalfootball.com/artic...astle-signing-marveaux-passed-medical-1711021

Liverpool medical chief Dr Peter Brukner says Sylvain Marveaux did not fail his medical last week.

Newcastle United swooped in for the former Rennes winger after Liverpool pulled the plug on talks over fitness concerns.

Brukner, speaking on Melbourne radio, confirmed Marveaux's comments that he did not fail his medical with the Reds.

Newcastle No2 John Carver has also rubbished claims of concerns over the midfielder's long-term fitness.
