Kwame is the same guy he's always been: big, althletic head case with bad hands. Kwame has been in the league for a number of years and has lost his position to a HS guy who has no idea what he's doing.

I got to say Marion is my favorite Suns player and I still feel if anyone should get Traded it's KT still and I just started noticing this Thread lol (I've been sticking to reading the Draft Prospects board) and whichever Thread interests ME but:

With Luxury tax and my opinion of Sarver being a bit cheap and the constant rumors of Amare being Traded...

Shawn Marion
#24
#29
Future 1st Rounder (not Hawks Pick, so it's likely to be in 25-30)
3 Million Cash

for

Gerald Wallace (similar contract to Diaw's - $8-8.5 Million a year)
#8

I probably should look at Hoopshype to see all the Teams under the cap but I know I wouldn't want to Trade Marion to Hawks with the Pick moving here next year. Suns save a lot of cap space, and the Suns were willing to Trade 3 First Rounders for a Pick at end of Lottery last year, so the #8 and similar player to Marion, and cap space is fair IMO... Suns don't need that many players...

The Suns could then keep Banks for a year, just for injury issues and Draft their replacement at PG next year (in deep PG Draft) and Banks just isn't THAT bad for a 10th player with a Team going 9 deep.

Stoudemire
Diaw
Wallace
Bell
Nash

Barbosa
#8
Thomas
Jones
Banks
...

One more time: Boris Diaw is in a base year contract situation.

Which only means that the Suns can only take back 1/2 of Diaw's $9mil deal...

...not a problem if the trading team is under the cap enough to absorb the difference.

...or if a third team under the cap is involved...

...or if the total amount of salaries involved still satisfies the 125% + $100K rule while dealing with the BYC issue. He is still tradeable....the options are just limited.

There simply aren't many teams that are far enough under the cap to make a difference. According to Hoopshype, the projected salaries for next year are:

Atlanta $48.4 (under the cap, but not enough)
Boston $62.0
Charlotte $27.7
Chicago $46.8 (under the cap but not enough)
Cleveland $64.4
Dallas $81.5
Denver $77.2
Detroit $57.7
Golden State $61.1
Houston $62.6
Indiana $62.7
Clippers $58.8
Lakers $57.7
Memphis $42.4
Miami $64.6
Milwuake $41.7
Minnesota $69.4
New Jersey $65.5
New Orleans $53.0
New York $87.8
Orlando $39.1
Philadelphia $63.3
Portland $57.6
Sacramento $53.9
San Antonio $60.9
Seattle $50.0
Toronto $51.0
Utah $59.9

We don't know exactly where the cap line will be, but I'm guessing in the $52 to $54 million range. To absob Diaw's salary, this would men having tobe below $45 million. Considering the nature of the free agency market, it seems likely teams that are $9 million under the cap would prefer to take someone like Lewis than Diaw.

That's why I suggested trading Diaw to Memphis.

1. Works especially well if Iavaroni goes to Memphis because he still likes Diaw's talent, distributing skills, and matchup problems he can create...and it's doubtful they would go after Lewis with Gasol on their roster.

2. Stromile Swift and Mike Miller have been shopped before. Miller is obviously the better player, but I still think that Swift could play a role here. He's fast, athletic, and an excellent shot blocker.

Memphis will have a cap lock of $2.8 million due to their #4 pick, so they won't have quite as much cap room as it looks.

In any case, the Griz have several wing guys including Warrick, Gay, Kinsey, Miller, and Cardinal. It is not clear that Diaw would be a great fit for them.

But still enough to absorb Diaw's deal.

It would be a fit if Iavaroni became their coach....Cardinal really isn't a wing (he's a big who can shoot from the outside)...and Miller would be gone in the deal...Diaw would be the only one who could play the 2-5 positions...even the 1 in a pinch.

Anyway...just a thought.

Not if they send another player out as part of the trade. For instance, based only on the CBA, a straight-up trade of Diaw for Gadzuric ($5.7 million next season) works. The Suns are "adding" only $1.2 million, which fits into the 125% rule, and Milwaukee is far enough under the cap that they could absorb the extra $3.3 million to accommodate Diaw.

Also, the Stoudemire/Diaw package deals I've used to start threads, while perhaps not attractive from a basketball standpoint, work just fine under the CBA.

For a Gazuric/Diaw straightup trade to make sense, DA gotta change quite some of his approach to the game. Diaw underperformed. No doubt. But DA himself openly wondered after games 1 and 2 vs Spurs why we didn't play Diaw for exploiting mismatches more in the regular season.

(The answer is clear that's because DA didn't have the patience to live longer with the imperfection of Diaw and Amare's learning how to be the ball handler in the new environment. Nash make everything so easy, why do you have to live with lesser performance?)

Anyway, with all the mental weakness and whatever threw Diaw's way as critism, he is a fundamentally sound player, while Gazuric might be just a slightly better version of Hunter.

I was mentioning it only as a CBA possibility to show how deals with BYC players work, not as something that would make basketball sense for either side.

Using the team salary info provided earlier (btw, early estimates have next year's salary cap somwhere between 54.5-57 million).

I don't see Memphis or Milwaukee interested in Diaw because they both are already loaded with young frontcourt talent which leaves Orlando and Charlotte.

Orlando:
  • Pat Garrity + Travis Diener + #39 pick for Boris Diaw and a future 1st rounder.
Charlotte:
  • Brevin Knight + conditional 1st rounder for Diaw

Diener is free agent.

I'm not convinced that bailing on Diaw makes basketball sense. It might make financial sense, but trading an expensive guy after a down season is not likely to get much in return - especially with so few teams in a position to make a deal.

Diaw would only be traded if Sarver demanded the team to cut payroll. With both Marion and KT more important to the Suns system and Banks having even worse trade value it would most likely be Diaw being the one to go. From a basketball sense D'Antoni is still a big fan of Diaw's and isn't likely to move him unless someone above him forces his hand.

Suns trade:
Marion/Diaw/Banks
Suns get:

Jazz trade:
AK
Jazz get:
Diaw/Banks

Celts trade:
Ratliff/Green/#5
Celts get:

Jazz trade AK for Diaw and Banks? Gimme a break

Without getting AK, the Celtics part of the deal makes no sense. Marion for a #5 does not get the Suns closer to the finals.

Well, AK had a more disappointing season than Diaw and Banks combined, that's not really a far-fetched
idea .

AK is not well suited for the Sloan offense because he's not much of an outside shooter (career 3 point shooter of 30% and only 21.3% this season). With Boozer getting most of the inside stuff, he's a poor fit.

Put AK on a team where he played PF (like last year when Boozer was not playing much) and I suspect he'd quickly return to stats like 2005-06 where he averaged 15.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg, and 3.2 blocks per game.

At $13.7 million AK is certainly overpaid for this year's stats and he's got a long contract, but I don't think they are anxious to dump him.

Raja Bell for Brendan Haywood and #16.

Would you do it?

Haywood was supposedly on the market some times last season as they still have Etan Thomas and both don't get along well.

I wouldn't. Haywood is a stiff.

But would you do Marion for Gay and Swift? Saves the Suns $8.2 million, and maybe Iavaroni likes Marion.
