Drafting Rajon Rondo and dealing him to the Celtics.

Mark my words on this one. The Suns' surreal aversion to actually selecting players with draft picks is going to ruin them in the long run.

No way any trade can be worse than the Googs + 2 1sts + money for Keon Clark and another scrub.

I dont think that I can be convinced otherwise.

Rondo? isn't he the guy who can't shoot to save his life? even struggles at the line? hell he struggles everywhere on the court?

Someone just read Bill Simmons. He's mysteriously high on Rondo as well.

looking at the two Celtics boxscores from pre-season you would see otherwise:

11-20 FG- 55% from the field
16-18 FT- 89% from the line

20ppg
6.5apg
5.5rpg
3.5spg

37mpg
1 TO pg

i know its only 2 games, but hell those are some pretty nice stats

Very odd considering I thought he was garbage at Kentucky.

Pre-season stats can be mis-leading so I will wait before I pass judgement.

Marcus Banks > Rondo right now, and since we're aiming for a championship right now I think it was the right decision. Besides, didn't we get a first rounder from the Celts in this deal? Next year's draft class is supposed to be much deeper.

This is the same thing we said last year about Nate Robinson.

All the best wishes to Rajon Rondo in Boston, but I'm more than pleased with Banks.

Lets see who we get with Cleveland's pick next year before we declare it the worst trade ever. If we don't sell it for cash.

Rondo will learn to shoot, I am not worried about that. And he will have a very successful career.

But I don't think he was going to turn into our PG of the future. With that said I would rather have gotten Banks and the Cleveland pick next season. Right now we have 3 picks in the 2007 first round, that could open up a ton of options in one of the best draft classes in recent history.

Why is every pick we give up the worst trade ever? IF he was that good why was he the 21st pick. Cant believe he will be a better player than Marcus Banks will be for the Suns.

Agree. Also, the Suns got Banks without giving up a pick, received a first round pick from Boston in 2007 for giving up the Rondo selection and also got rid of Brian Grants's contract. IMO, pretty slick.

Now selling that second first round draft pick is what makes me sick.

Just my observation. I'm beginning to think that D'Antoni would rather trade for a polished product (whether it be a particular college player or in a trade with another team) than wait on an unpolished player to develop. Thus, I think D'Antoni will gladly forfeit a draft pick(s) to move up in the draft if he likes a particular player or use them in a trade for a player he likes.

Barbosa is the only noticeable exception that I can think of, where D'Antoni is willing to wait for a player to develop. Of course, I think D'Antoni recognized early on that Barbosa was an outstanding talent.

Yeah, there was no excuse on that second 1st rounder. At least get a future pick in exchange for it. And that Barbosa is scary fast. If his defense and decision making can improve, we'll have a steal of a deal on his contract.

I love the position we're in for the draft. If Atlanta can somehow stay out of the top 3 in the draft, (I'm hoping for 4 or 5 spot) we'll have an excellent shot at either staying put or trading up a spot or two and snagging someone who can have a bright future in this league.

Even if it does turn out that we get hosed in that Rondo trade, at least we know that we fleeced them when we traded Rogers and Delk for JJ a few years back. We owe them one.

And Simmons is high on Rondo because he's a Celtic. I like Simmons' columns, but he is clearly a Celtic homer.

The second pick was a roster slot issue. D'Antoni wanted veterans on the deep bench rather than projects. That may be short sighted, but hardly irrational.

Exactly. And i strangely trust Simmons judgement. But even if Rondo does turn out to be special, like everyone else, I'll take my chances with Marcus Banks (who is really a only slightly lesser skilled athlete with a few years more experience) and that Cleveland draft pick. Suffice to say i like our odds.

I think you guys are underrating Rondo. He's a good point guard, can play D and shooting can improve, especially if he was on the Suns. The Celtics fans I have talked to are very impressed with him so far, I think he's been shooting the ball well too so I don't really see that hurting his career.

With that said though, I think Banks is better for RIGHT NOW and probably for the next 2 years after that. And Banks would help us much more on our championship run. So while I think Rondo could have been our point guard of the future, I think they made the right move. There will be other good point guards in the draft later on.

I can see where your coming from on this, however, I do not think the roster filler veterans on the Suns team (Burke, EP and Marks) are going to help the Suns much more than a rookie. I think the Suns just wanted to save some salary by not giving a first round draft pick a guaranteed salary for more than one year and also the Suns probably liked the idea of having the league subsidize one or more of the veteran minimum type salaries.

I hardly think the elite veterans mentioned above are going to help the Suns win a Championship. However, I do think Jumaine Jones can help the Suns if healthy.

Just another thought. If all the money the Suns saved by not signing TT went for signing Banks, where did the 3 million go from selling the latter draft pick? I mean the Suns have to carry a full roster and Jumaine Jones signed for the minimum.

Maybe the Suns saved it to help extend Diaw. I think the extra 3 million would help make up for the 10 million the Suns and Diaw are reportedly apart on contract negotiations... especially if they split the difference. If splitting the difference would get it done, all the Suns would need to kick in is only 2 million more (3+2=5). :sarcasm:
