And school records mean little in college. Chris Rix and Chris Weinke broke school records and led their teams to good records at Florida State, Zack Mills broke all sorts of records at Penn State, etc. etc. The fact remians that Navarre is a rookie 7th round draft pick, had a terrible combine, and was mercilessly booed by his own fans in college. Sorry if I'm not optimistic about his future in the NFL.

Could have been a fluke Mao. Afterall any Qb from Michigan is Tom Brady waiting to happen.

He was nicknamed "Small Game" Navarre for a reason. If you have a survey of 100 Michigan fans, I'm guessing somewhere between 85-90 of them will have something bad to say about Navarre. I hope Navarre sets the league on fire as Green vowed McCown would do, but I have a hard time seeing it happening.

That's true of any position. But, more often, guys who have good numbers in college are better pros than guys who have poor numbers in college.

No one knows how the guy is going to do obviously. But, out of Chris Greisen, Preston Parsons or Navarre, which one had the best chance of success in the NFL coming out of college? Realistically?

Which of them had any success in the NFL, period? I'm not convinced that any of them would have been on an NFL roster save for Arizona's. Greisen was Tobin's boy from back in the day. Parsons was a local kid who Walter still thinks could make the Pro Bowl, and Navarre... well, his story has yet to be told, but who else were the Cards going to take in the 7th?

Glad you knew that one

Russ! Makes me feel like I'm not alone(funny how he alwsys screamed that). LOL.
My point is we can't change what we have now. The off-season will be what it will be.
The pee'ers and moaners about who we took until they work out.
Those that will be happy with a couple of FA's.
Those that will be kool-aided out and over the top.
If last year is any indication we're in good hands. Right now, we just have to find a way to win.

And we all know how important the combine is in measuring how well someone will do in the NFL.

That and the Wunderlich are the key.

That's all good. I'm fully aware the odds are against Navarre actually being a decent, NFL starter. I just think they are a little bit better than the other two. College results and competition are not entirely worthless.

the insanity! Anyone know the serenity prayer? You can't change what we have. Hopefully, maybe miraculously, some of these guys GET IT! Maybe they don't.
Boldin's umble was all boldin. and, forhget the crap about taping his fingers. He already made the catch. He dropped one right to him the series before that.
The InT. was all McCown, he should have run and gone out of bounds.
Anyway you want to look at it, Navarre starts next week with Croom,. I think both of them are better than you all think. Let's see. But please stop the McCown stuff. It's like beating a dead horse.

I totally agree Dvl and hope you're right about Navarre and Croom - but I won't hold my breath on them. Better to be pleasantly surprised than crushed and demoralized (which is what I felt like after seeing Shaun King throw the worst INT in NFL History yesterday).

True, one of my biggest objections to McCown was how he handled a situation nowhere near as bad as the one Navarre faced at Michigan.

I like the kid, I just don't think he's ready to play. He was thrown in too early against Michigan and I think it "set him back" there.

Here it may not, fans are so frustrated with King and some fans Green that they may give Navarre a lot of slack.

I just know this, Detroit is 7th in the NFL in sacks, we have a rookie RB, a porous OL and a QB who was sacked 9 times in the Rose Bowl the last time he faced a real pass rush in a game. I think the over under on sacks if Navarre lasts the game is probably 10.

Now, come on, cheese. The worst INT in NFL History was Aaron Brooks' shovel pass to Al Wilson last week. Hopefully, he'll be our starting QB next season. Ugh.

I can see Cheese's point. Fitz is WIDE OPEN, King has time to step up and fire it in there, and instead he tries to loft in the ball without stepping into the throw. I gotta be honest, as much as I wanted to see King get to play, the second Vilma caught that ball I yelled "pull King right now" . That was brutal.

At least Brooks had a pass rush on his pick.

Russ, I might agree with you if Navarre were say a 2nd round pick with obvious talent that the Cards were gonna groom to be the eventual starter. But that isnt this situation. Fact is, Navarre is a long shot to even get drafted (most had him a UDFA) and even more of a long shot to see any playing time this year. This in no way, shape, or form will 'set back' Navarre b/c frankly what is there to set back? Give him a look and see what he has in a live game situation.

exactly. It wasn't just bone-head play. I can deal with that. That pick was King with all the time in the world with a gift TD in front of him and he throws the ball 7 YARDS short - That's 21 FEET short.

But why now? Why not end of the season. If you think he has no obvious talent to groom for the future(Green I mean) why in the world start him in the 12th game when Josh and King are healthy?

Maybe Green thinks that things on the offensive side of the ball can't get much worse. I'm sure that if things go absolutely wrong then the plan would be to bring McCown back in seeing that he's the current backup. I honestly don't see things being more inept than they already have.

If the combines were totally worthless, then why would they even have them?

Like I said before, I hope Navarre comes in and "sets the NFL on fire." I hope he goes back to the state he played his college ball in with a chip on his shoulder and pays back all those fans who made his collegiate life hell. But after watching him in college and talking to UM fans I just don't see it happening. But if he does succeed (and I'll be rooting for him to do so), I'll gladly come back here, eat my crow and continue rooting for him, just as I have rooted for every Cardinal QB to put on the uniform.

EDIT - And I agree with you on Navarre starting. We've seen what little we have in McCown and King and Navarre should get a start or two now when there's something on the line as opposed to a no-pressure situation later in the season. I'm just not very optimistic on him being a successful NFL QB.

Because obviously a couple of games isnt enough to judge the talent level. Look at McCown, he got the last-what-3 games last year as a 'try out'? And he was annointed the starter this year and he has shown nothing to deserve that. Let Navarre come in and see what he has, and stick with him. We know what King and McCown have already, lets see if Navarre can show any flashes during the last half of the season.

I dont know if he has any 'obivous talent' to grrom for the future, thats what letting him start is all about

The obvious talent and grooming thing was a direct quote from your post, you said it's not like he was a 2nd rounder that had obvious talent we were grooming for the future.

The fact is the only reason Josh started this year is Green said he was the guy, I guarantee you if we'd hired another coach, Josh wasn't going to start we'd have started someone else.

I guess my point is Navarre isn't a kid you can evaluate now he's very likely not ready to play he'll need a couple of years of coaching and watching before he is. If you judge him now, you'll say no chance and bury him.

At the combine they put him through the standard throwing drills, he was bad on shorter passes and touch passes that scouts dropped him several rounds on their boards.

Given how our offense has looked, and our OL, we're going to be asking him to throw the very routes he struggled so badly with in college.
