This isn't true. Russell Wilson had legit concerns. His size is a statistical outlier. Dak got a DUI prior to the draft. Tom was benched his senior year. Carr had his older brother David who failed as a starter (not all his fault). Guys who fall, fall for a reason. You are drafting the 5th or 6th QB in a draft for a reason. It doesn't mean that he can't succeed, but there are more road blocks in the way.

You may have a point with Russell but not with the others. If they had top rated talent they would have been drafted higher regardless. Talent trumps everything.

You may have a point with Russell but not with the others. If they had top rated talent they would have been drafted higher regardless. Talent trumps everything.

Derek Carr was drafted after Manziel even thought he was a much more polished and ready QB.

Dak was viewed as an option for Denver in round 1, but dropped.

Tom Brady was viewed as deficient by his college coach. Not a shock that the NFL viewed him the same way which is why he dropped.

You are correct Sir!

So we are 2 for 13..
This is great perspective, and I think relevant to the QB discussion at hand. As fans we like to talk in absolutes then use anecdotal evidence to support our claims. "Never trade up in round 1 for a QB, look at Christian Ponder" ... "Always trade up on round 1 for a QB, look at Wentz/Goff!"

For me, I look at our first round picks and since PP21, most have been ok players, but nobody that would alter our win/loss column like even a marginal upgrade at QB would. Look at salaries: Bradford, who is not a top 15, probably not a top 20 QB in this league, got an annual average higher than the highest WR. I think you have to look at the draft similarly, it's very possible that the 5th QB, as long as he's even a marginal upgrade from what you have or project to have, is more valuable than a really good positional player.

Looking at these 1st round picks is why I'm ok selling the farm to move up and get a QB if we are really sold on him. This franchise has never had a franchise QB under the age of 35. I'd personally be willing to sell a ton of draft capital to solidy that position for the next 10-12 yrs. Assuming, of course, that we know how to evaluate QB talent which is of course a question mark at this point.
