The Das Boot thread got me thinking about this. What are your top 3 war movies of all time?

I'd say:

Saving Private Ryan
Das Boot
Glory

But, man, it's really tough to leave off GREAT films like Gallipoli, Apocalypse Now, The Longest Day, Full Metal Jacket and The Deer Hunter.

Yours?

I almost voted for Patton. Fantastic. Lots of great movies listed here.

Does anyone know when the Pacific Theatre Band of Brothers is going to be on?

Schindler's List? I am not so sure that really counts as a war movie strictly speaking.

Maybe it does. If we expand it, can I vote for The Spy for Came in From the Cold.

OT: For those of you who like Civil War stuff, make sure to read Killer Angels. A book about Gettysburg. Fantastic.

I don't think I can pick 3, there's a lot to choose from. As a kid I loved
The Big Red One, but I think today it would be low on the list.

I guess if I had to choose:

Platoon
Mash
Full Metal Jacket

I really like the Band of Brothers set and most of the older movies too.

In a van...down by the river.
My favorites:
1)Saving Private Ryan
Opening 30 minutes blew me away, then what followed was an amazing story capped by a gut wrenching finale. Fantastic movie all around.

2)Apocalypse Now
Surreal and epic. "Never get outta the boat, absolutely ******* right."
I prefer the full length version released in 2001.

3)Black Hawk Down
Ridley Scott nailed this.

Honorable mention
-U571
-Dirty Dozen
-Force 10 from Navarone
-Platoon
-Glory

Forgot about that one, great movie...it is sure tough to narrow it down to 3.

Definitely an underrated movie that is extremely well done. The war scenes are incredible.

Good call on "We Were Soldiers." A really, really great 5 star movie that is many times overlooked. I also agree on Saving Private Ryan. I think my 3rd favorite is "Gettysburg" (Sheen, Daniels, Berenger version), though. Long, but extremely powerful.

BTW. Bruce "Snake" Crandall, portrayed by Greg Kinear in We Were Soldiers, went on to work with the City of Mesa (AZ), in the planning department as I remember. I was lucky enough to meet him several times. He received a belated Medal of Honor for what we saw in the movie, I believe in 2006.

Black Hawk Down-Best portrayal of modern combat.

Longest Day-Just a great movie

Gettysburg-Again, great movie

Speaking of We Were Soldiers, I've met the SGM, he lived close to Fort Benning and we met Mel Gibson and Sam Elliot when they came down to Benning to do filming (Sam rules)

Too many to narrow it down to three. I'm surprised nobody mentioned All Quiet On The Western Front.
