Offensive Minded Candidates:

Would make sense if the priority is developing a QBOF and an offense designed around RB David Johnson.

1. Pat Shurmur (MIN OC)---has past HC experience---is arguably the OC of the year, with his clever weekly wrinkles. Could bring UFA QB Case Keenam with him while he grooms a QBOF. Who would his choice for DC be?

2. Todd Haley (PIT OC)---wants another chance to prove himself as a HC and was highly successful as an OC with the Cardinals. Has been highly productive in PIT, but reports of the continued tension between him and Big Ben are troublesome. The Cardinals would want to know what veteran QB Haley would want as his 2018 starter and who his choice for DC would be. Mike Pettine, the former CLE HC, could be hot choice for DC for a number of the offensive minded candidates. Would Haley be amenable to keeping James Bettcher as DC? Typically it is best for a new HC to hire his own staff.

3. Josh McDaniels (NE OC)---currently looks like one of the top candidates for the Giants' HC spot. It looks like this is the year that McDaniels will take a HC job. In Arizona, who would he want as his veteran QB? The Giants' situation with Eli returning for one more year and a chance to draft one of the top QBs would seem a better scenario for McDaniels. If not there, working with Matt Stafford or Mitchell Trubisky in the NFC North would seem attractive.

4. John DeFilippo (PHI QBC)---can he make the leap from QB coach to HC? Would bring a lot of knowledge and energy to the position from an offensive standpoint. He would need a veteran DC to take care of that side of the ball, the way McVay does in LA. Which veteran DC could JDF bring with him?

5. Frank Reich (PHI OC)---was a QB coach in Arizona. MB and SK know him well. Would seem to have the gravitas and attention to detail to be a good HC. Who would be his choice for QB and DC?

6. Pete Carmicheal (NO OC)---has been one of the more unsung coaches with the Saints, but sure knows how to focus an offense around a pair of dynamic RBs.

Defensive Minded Candidates:

Would make sense if the priority is to finish building a dominant defense which the team could lean on while it develops a QBOF.

1. Matt Patricia (NE DC)---talk about attention to detail, Patricia brings an engineer's approach and rare work ethic to coaching---he even got BB and his staff updated on the latest film study technologies. Is a genius at detecting another team's offensive tendencies. Who would his QB and OC be?

2. Steve Wilks (CAR DC)---super aggressive approach to coaching defense---would expect all his players to play hard and physical. Excellent background as DB coach. Who would his QB and OC be?

3. Mike Vrabel (HOU DC)---has only one year of DC experience (with mixed results), but has the charisma and the pedigree to be an excellent HC. Much would depend on the kind of staff he could bring with him.

4. Teryl Austin (DET DC)---this guy could be the diamond in the rough. Like Wilks, his defenses play hard and very physical. Players love him and his style of coaching. Could he bring Jim Bob Cooter with him as OC? Cooter has his QBs make calls at the l.o.s. This approach was effective for Matt Stafford.

I like Shurmur anyways, but I really like that Shurmur could bring along a QB with him. I’ll take any of their 3 QB’s over what we currently have on our roster. I would still draft a QB in 1st or 2nd round.

And now there's 6 candidates

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...nterview-with-patriots-lb-coach-brian-flores/

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the team has also requested an interview with Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores. Both Patricia and Flores could interview with Arizona this week.

Flores joined the Patriots as a scouting assistant in 2004 and moved to the coaching staff in 2008 as a special teams assistant. He was the safeties coach for four years before moving to linebackers in 2016. It’s the first known head coaching interest in Flores, who will turn 37 next month.

IMHO - We're looking for a well-rounded individual who, in addition to knowing X's & O's, is a great leader, knows how to delegate, understands the big picture, is innovative, can teach/develop and can install/incorporate or keep our existing winning team culture.

While some of the young guys sound brilliant, are they well-rounded enough? Or could they be one-trick ponies?

Also (& I'm already ducking rocks being thrown) what's wrong with keeping Bettcher as DC and sign an offense-minded HC? All Bettcher did was keep our defense in the top 5).

It would have to be the HC’s decision to keep Bettcher, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he were retained. Again, it HAS to be the HC’s decision though.

Matt Patricia seems like the exact type of guy Steve Keim would want to hire.

Pat Shurmur..... Not so much.

Technically, all 3 guys are free agents and can sign with us anyway.

I thought about that too, even though I have ran out of rocks to throw at him in the second halves for adjustments but the guy is young and will get better with experience. Ironically, Bettcher actually might be more ready now than anytime in the past and his best years are ahead of him because he has the knowledge now while on the job

i personally have no problem with this. The new HC may have a problem if Betch is "force fed" to him though.

Todd Haley doesn't seem to be a candidate. I wonder if he didn't get along with Keim while he was here, although Keim was not the GM at that time. I thought that MB reached out to him at the time that Whisenhunt was let go. Maybe MB has soured on him.

The real deal to me with these "young minds" is who do they bring with them. Do they have the respect around the league to pull in top notch coaches? So in their interviews they need to show a plan and have it laid out as to whom they can bring with them to see it to MB and SK.

NO MORE BASK...

I seem to recall that too, didn't we ask permission from Pitt to interview him when BA was hired?

Is this job an A+ landing spot compared to other openings? I hope so.

Shurmur, DeFilippo, and Patricia would make me happy out of the listed candidates.

Unlike some others, I really hold Keim in high esteem and think he's got a good pulse on the league. I'm especially inspired by the fact that we had a plan and we're executing so quickly on what's a holiday for many of us.

The top candidates are going to NY and Chicago respectively first Because of a higher pic, Eli and Trubisky to build around. I’d take Chicago over here because of a qb already drafted in Trubisky. Someone young would have to start completely from scratch and there is little glamor in this job. But it’s still better then the Browns lol

Why do you say?

Keim is a blood and guts scout who exudes passion attitude and energy. I feel like there is a volcano burbling just below the surface every time he speaks.

Patricia just seems like the exact same type of fella. Do you remember the Goodell clown shirt he wore? I loved it.

Shurmur is more of an analytical personality type. Low energy and attitude. I just don't think Keim will want to invest is someone so diametrically opposed to his own personality.

I think Mike Bidwill is the same way actually. How in the heck do you choose Arians (with his bombastic personality) if it isn't something you are actively looking for?

As I have mentioned too. They are going to want someone who is a unique, alpha male, personality
