Davis is a middle tier DT, AT BEST. Step has a LOOOOONNNNNGGGGGG way to go.

Middle tier?? Davis is THE most underrated player on the defense. At least half of the tackles credited to McKinnon were actually made by Russell. McKinnon simply jumped on as the ball carrier was on the way to the ground and since ronnie mac's number was easier to see the MLB got credit for the tackles.

Well thats a questionable statement. Wislon, McKinnon, Thompson, Hill or Wakefield might all be better candidates for most underrated.

I watched Davis closely all season, and believe me, at least for 2003, he was middle tier at best.

He had exactly one sack in 15 games, and 37 tackles, against mostly single team blocking.

With that said, he's still an interesting player, because of his ability to hold his ground in the middle of the line. He doesn't seem to get of blocks real well, but does clog up the area between the tackles.

Bell tried to get upfield, and was often out of position. But I remember Davis hanging in the middle, occasionally wrapping up a RB, and, occasionally, getting to the sideline or a little ways downfield to make a play.

Good stuff Shane!!! Did you notice Josh Rue at tailback by chance? I found that intriguing from Skorp's post. I wonder if he will be able to make the change? Is he gonna stay at tailback or is this just a look-see?

I went to my first Flagstaff practice in a few years today. I'll echo Shane's comments about the defensive speed and comraderie. They looked sharp.

Play of the day was during 7-on-7 when Fitz pulled down a pass with the DB all over him. I was sitting on the front row of the bleachers, and heard the DB (didn't catch the number) say to a teammate, "holy f***, that guy is for real."

What?!?!? Most of the guys you mention are candidates for most overrated. Except for Wakefield who is only a candidate for car sales.

Davis was not schemed to get sacks. His job was to clog up the middle and trip up the ball carrier so McKinnon and Thompson wouldn't look so bad.

Notice that you don't hear DG dissin' RD.

There it is. I hope this proves true all season. Our season is based on it.

At the scrimage, I didn't see Fritz getting much separation from the DBs. Is he getting open? Is he creating any room?

Granted things are different in the NFL but... Someone on here made a good point (FitzFan1, I think) regarding Fitzgerald's abilities. Fitz doesn't necessasarily need that much separation in order to come down with the ball. He has good leaping ability, great body control, and excellent hands. Josh needs to learn to trust in Fitz, throw him the ball and let him do his thing, which is getting to the ball, making the extraordinary catch, even when well covered.

In the two practices I have seen he is not getting much separation especially when hes llined up with Wilson.
