Ua Football??

Has anybody heard anything about the DL ( junior college transfers) that are going to join the team this year ?

Last i heard. Long wouldnt qualify and will go somewhere else. Buut Holmes is looking good to make it to Ua and has an apartment in Tuscon and needs 1 more credit to get in by fall semester. he has to get one more credit if he doesnt he aint gonna make it.

Basically the same thing as it has been for awhile. Long has a lot of work still left to do while Holmes will be fine. UA's defense should be fine next year regardless.

Apparently, Long did not qualify...good luck on Holmes qualifying...ASU lost 2 also...although they weren't 5* players...

I heard from and insider that Holmes will be ok and at be with the team.. Long still needs to get some more credits approved by the clearinghouse.. the Uof A is trying to help him with that.

Holmes will be in and will be there for the start of camp. Long still might get in, but if he does it will be after camp starts.

Holmes is in. He is finishing up an internet class at Pima this week. He said he will be at the first practice next Thursady. Long is not a definite but he is in Tucson taking summer classes at Pima. Time will only tell but if Long becomes eligible, that is a plus. I am just glad Holmes will be playing. The guy is going to help the Cats immediately.

Five-star defensive end Louis Holmes says he will be among the newcomers who report to the University of Arizona football team next week.

"That is definite," Holmes said Wednesday in a brief phone interview.

But there still is no official word from UA whether he and five-star defensive tackle Gabe Long are enrolled. Coaches are not allowed to comment on the junior college transfers because they were declared recruitable athletes after failing to qualify academically at UA for the spring semester.

"It's a never-ending process," Arizona coach Mike Stoops said about his recruiting class' status. "We will not know until the first week (of practice) on some of those guys."

The Wildcats begin workouts at the Rincon Vista Complex on Thursday. Newcomers are to report Tuesday with veterans checking in Aug. 2.

Even if Holmes and Long have not cleared all their academic hurdles, the general rule of thumb is they have until the 12th day of school to enroll.
That would mean missed practice time during fall camp, but if they gain enrollment status, they could be eligible for the Sept. 2 opener against BYU.
The majority of UA's 2006 recruiting class, which was ranked 19th nationally by Scout.com, has been taking part in voluntary workouts and attending summer school.

Holmes and Long are considered the crown jewels of the class, and both have been seen around UA's campus often this summer.

Holmes, a 6-foot-6, 270-pound end, was the No. 1- ranked junior college player in the nation out of Scottsdale Community College last year. He has been named one of the top five newcomers nationally by several preseason publications.

Long (6-4, 280) was the top JC defensive tackle in the 2004 season. He is out of Fullerton (Calif.) College. The Citizen has been unable to be reach the tackle for comment.

The Wildcats' top 20 ranking was based largely on signing seven four-star Scout.com recruits, but also for the two five-star junior college recruits Holmes and Long.

Not sure how you base a recruiting class around JUCO's...

A recruiting class is for the future, JUCO's are to help the team win that season.

I dont know where you are getting, "they have no chance to step foot on campus", when the only one who is even close to not qualifying is Long. Classes are not finished, therefore he doesnt have his final grades. Even if he doesnt make it, which is more likely then him qualifying, Holmes will be on the team.

Holmes cleared to play; starts practice Friday

Finally, UA football fans can relax a little now that junior college transfer Louis Holmes, has enrolled at the University of Arizona, clearing him to play for the 2006 season. Holmes is at practice and in pads for Friday's practice. This ends a long speculation among fans as to what the star defensive ends academic status truly was and if he would ever suit up for the Wildcats.

Both could re-sign with ASU after two years or go elsewhere.

ASU will begin practice on Aug. 4 without three of its 24 signees from the 2006 recruiting class. Wide receiver Angelo Richardson remains paralyzed from injuries suffered in a shooting.
