Not saying it was easy but I cut ties with half my family for basically the same reasons. It can be done. Sometimes you just gotta do it.

It was a necessary risk. The topic least discussed was our lack of overall talent on the d-line past Campbell. After him, it's fairly average. RK has top-5 talent and can take a lot of pressure off of Campbell along with Jones.

At #29, you're either playing it same with a late 1st-2nd round graded player or taking a risk on someone who's slipping. AZ is getting elite talent at a heavily discounted rate.

Spot on. We have to get to the QB this year. CC needs help. At 29 it was IMO a great pick.

He's apparently one of those guys who is just freakishly strong, no extra fat on him, he's not weight room strong he's just naturally strong you can't move him, he's got strong hands and a very powerful lower body.

LOL all this talk about other men's physiques.

One draft commentator last night compared his body type to that of a 290 lb running back. He said he had the best butt and thighs he's ever seen on a defensive lineman. Not kidding, I heard that last night...

I haven't watched the Alabama tape yet, but these left me feeling pretty good much of the time. Against Auburn, he was double-teamed almost constantly, which means that opposing coaches took him VERY seriously. against Ole Miss, he had 3 sacks.

I think the character stuff is a little overrated on this guy (compared to a prickly ******* like Connor Cook). A fight on campus when he was in high school (jumped in to help his brother, IIRC) and his boys had some pot in a hotel room?

Clearly there was a lack of institutional control at Miss. St., but if you're going to take a risk on a character concern, you're better off with a pot guy.

You can see his strength in those videos. However it appears he uses his strength to bull rush most of the time with a not very effective spin move that he throws in occasionally. If he is to become a pass rusher he'll need to develop another move in the NFL.

Still I like his strength and ability to shed block and make a tackle. I also like how he stays low and usually wins the leverage battle. I guess it comes down to is this kid coachable and will he be on the field to be coached or will he be one of those guys who is constantly suspended and absent from the field.

The one thing that I see that I don't like about him is that he often jogs during plays to the ball carrier. His effort needs to pick up a bit. I've heard this comment from analysts; it's not that he dogs it, it's that he dogs it at times. He's come out of his stance hard, but when the pass is complete, he doesn't sprint to the ball carrier like he should.

My issue is this group as a collective, not as individuals. It could be very good, but it could become toxic.

Robert Nkemdiche
Chandler Jones
Alex Okafor
Tyrann Mathieu

and with adding Ed Stinson and Markus Golden's tantrums in the playoffs.

That is my only concern with the pick. When do you have too many character issues?

That's a fair concern but Okafor doesn't belong on that list IMO. HB has earned his way off the list IMO. Pretty much the entire team had crappy moments during the Panthers beat down.

I do agree with your premise and think we are close to our maximum for problem children.

Keim swings for the fences... a perfect time to do so late in the first round.

this definitely is a valid point. will be interesting to see how this unit meshes both on and off the field. I'm really hoping they still get Freeney back during training camp. A vet like him could be a key piece to keep everyone in line and focussed, not to mention add one more weapon to kill QBs.

This to me just shows how legit the Cards are now. You wouldn't see this excitement out of him if he went to the Browns. Bird Gang! He's excited for the season to start and so am I!

totally. when coleman was being interviewed about the browns he didn't sound overly joyed about it. he was just excited to be in the nfl, kinda felt bad for him.

OKafor was arrested last March for evading arrest. Then he gets injured during a playoff bye week. He belongs.

Mathieu is only a few years from significant substance abuse issues.

It is a fine line between managing people and giving them chances vs being the Bengals or Cowboys..

They didn't take him with a top 10 pick; they took him at the bottom of the first. He wasn't going to last until #92, and someone would probably have taken him in the second tonight and considered it a steal. Heck, the Panthers drafted a DT with the very next pick... We'll see how it plays out, but the team did the research and I like their confidence.

true. it's all a matter of perspective. you list that group together and put them on the cowboys and most everyone here would be ripping them for character concerns. But I'm okay with it for now. Going with "good guys" for decades before BASK got us nowhere except for one brief two year run.

Didn't know about the arrest so thanks for the info. As I said I do agree with your premise so maybe we have met our threshold of "character" guys.

Doug Frantz asked SK about this today and here is the link to that interview (about 9 minutes in) http://arizonasports.com/player/?a=321237

In this interview, Keim said there were about 15-20 guys who were taken off their board for character issues. He said MB, as a former federal prosecutor, has an uncanny knack for reading people and can tell if they are telling teams what they want to hear or if they are truly contrite. In fact, Keim went so far as to say that RN was still beating himself up and he was like, "Dude, let it go!"

Was listening to Keim's radio interview on the drive to work.

He said mgmt. has changed their philosophy a bit about high risk draft picks - they now believe in giving "some" a 2nd chance, depending on the individual. They spent a lot of time with him, and Michael Bidwill said he leans on his prosecutor background to assess character. If they have doubt about someone, Bidwill meets with him, and he makes the final call.

This is a great pick for a team like the Cardinals.

Love this pick.

First of all he's top 10 pick talent at 29 in the draft you always like that!

The entire reason you build a culture like the Cardinals have is to use it to get maximum benefit out of players like this.

Because he has a good home this has a much better chance than on other teams. I am not worried about him disappearing in games he will be taught how to beat a double team when he has to, Docket could do that and Docket was not as good as this kid will be.

When he's not doubled he will terrorize people.

Love the pick given where we are.

All in baby!

My buddy called him a defensive Ricky Williams. Your
Mileage will vary on how good or bad that is.

I kid you not, this is EXACTLY what I was thinking last night. He's a different type of cat. His whole philosopher shtick falls right in line with that. If can stay focused amazing pick. If not we've got a loon on our hands.

this is exactly what this pick... and the Chandler Jones trade are. We're THIS close to being a Super Bowl team. sometimes you need a little nasty to get you over the top. Just have to hope the nasty is contained on the field and doesn't hurt you off it, but it's a risk you have to take when you're this close, especially if we're not talking about domestic violence or other really gnarly transgressions.

His press conference is on right now on 98.7.

He says he knew he was meant to be a Cardinal.

Mentioned that Matthieu inspired him by going through the same thing. Glad he is here. Can't wait to play with him.
