The Phoenix Suns finally showed they can beat one of the Western Conference's top teams. Now they'd like to do it for a second consecutive game.
Though their franchise-record winning streak ended earlier this week, the Suns still have a lengthy streak at home on the line as they try to take advantage of Carlos Boozer's absence in a matchup with the Utah Jazz.
Phoenix (37-9) is only a half-game behind Dallas for the league's best record after beating San Antonio 103-87 on Thursday. It was the team's first game since having its record run of 17 straight wins snapped with a 121-112 loss to Minnesota on Monday.

"The playoffs are going to tell it all, and we know that," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We're just trying to win as many games as we can to get the homecourt seed, and if we're good enough, we'll see in the playoffs."

Before Thursday's victory, the Suns had been 0-6 against the other top teams in the West record-wise -- the Mavericks, Spurs, Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers.
Two of those losses came to Utah in November during Phoenix's 3-6 start. The team has since lost only three of 37 games.
"The team that played those guys in early November is not even close to being the same team today," D'Antoni said of his Suns, referring to a 111-106 overtime loss at San Antonio on Nov. 8.
That game marked the first start of the season for Amare Stoudemire, who missed most of last season following microfracture knee surgery. He had 24 points and a career-high 23 rebounds Thursday, hours after being selected as an All-Star reserve along with teammates Steve Nash and Shawn Marion.

A knee problem now has sidelined Boozer, who has missed the last two games and is expected to sit out at least a few more weeks with a hairline fracture. Utah's only All-Star selection, Boozer averaged 21.5 points and 14.0 rebounds in the two meetings with Phoenix.
The Jazz (30-17) handed the Suns one of their only three home losses all season, but Phoenix has won 19 of its last 20 home games. That run includes 10 wins in a row since a 144-139 overtime loss to Washington on Dec. 22.
Utah, meanwhile, overcame Boozer's absence to beat the Spurs 97-93 on Wednesday in its most recent outing.
"It was a must-win game for us, especially without Carlos," said Mehmet Okur, who had 31 points and 11 rebounds. "That's how we've got to play night in, night out. Without Boozer, everybody's got to step up."
In Boozer's absence, two of Utah's offseason acquisitions are being asked to step up. Rafael Araujo had seven points and five rebounds against San Antonio while playing aggressive defense on Tim Duncan, and rookie Paul Millsap had 15 points and eight boards after posting consecutive double-doubles earlier in the week.
"The encouraging thing was that Rafa played well and Millsap keeps getting better every day," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "That's a tremendous thing for this franchise."

A lock? Bite your tongue. Jerry Sloan's system and players have always given us fits.

Suns may have a few problems as well.

"Bell will be a game-day decision for tonight's game after leaving Thursday's game because of a tight left knee, which had inflammation this week. Bell's range of motion improved Friday but he said it felt the same ...... Nash is expected to play tonight despite waking up with a sore right shoulder that bothered him in Thursday's win."

Might be we'll see some of the bench time everyone's been looking for.

I'd rather the Suns rest Bell than risk anything. LB is better than Bell for the most part anyway, and it would maybe even give Banks and Jumaine a crack at some minutes. I hope the Suns are very careful with their important players and don't push them too hard.

Heck, if Nash is sore enough, and I was the coach, I'd be open to sitting him, or at least playing dramatically reduced minutes.

The Suns will want to win this game and will not set anybody. They lost twice to the Jazz and had a chance to win both games. The Suns may set someone later on, but not in this game. If Bell does not play, it will be because he is hurting.

Here are the next two games. These are the games where Bell or Nash will rest if they need to.

It will be interesting to see if Rafael plays against the suns and plays well. Toronto gave up on him, but he played decent against the Spurs the last game. He is big and strong and seems to move well.

A charge on Amare that should have been a blocking foul (looked like the defender's foot was in the restricted area) and then two charges by Utah that were called blocking fouls. I thought both Nash and Marion were set.

Refs are killing us. Refusing to call illegal defences against the Jazz, allowing the Jazz to hack and slap to force turnovers, especially when we drive into the lane. Offensive 3 seconds should be called on the Jazz a lot also. Over the back calls against the Jazz would be nice too.

Also, dirty players have a new offensive move - jump knees 1st into the defender and you'll get the call every time. Tonight, Harpring did it to Barbosa.

We are giving up too many offensive rebounds yet again. The Suns got a few of their own, but that was mostly early on when they were leading. Also, need to cut down on turnovers. 12 at half-time is unacceptable.

If it's the play I'm thinking of, LB's foot was inside the restricted area. The two blocking fouls on Nash and Marion were horrible though

The majority of those were due to the refs allowing the Jazz to play as physically as they wanted to without calling fouls. I don't know how the refs can decide to call a game in a manner that clearly favors one team over another all the time (like everytime we play the Jazz & Spurs).

His foot might have been on the line, but I was just referring to the player leading with the knees when jumping towards the basket when he sees a defender in front of him.

Utah's just got 5 guys standing in the paint on defense with no calls against them........

Shawn & LB both have 4 fouls....

Now Marion has 5 fouls........wish the damn refs would blow the whistle on both ends

When you play Utah, you have to rely on your fundamentals. That's why Small Game Shawn is a liability. I'm not surprised the Suns have picked it up now that he's out.

Amare just got denied.
AK got the block with one hand and had his other hand on Amare's hip. He gives him a little shove on the hip to thrown off his balance a little and mess up his elevation. It's a trick the good shot blockers use and the refs almost always miss it.

LB gets his 5th foul on a broken play

Utah is getting a lot of lucky bounces and is converting on possessions they shouldn't have scored on.

Yup, we block a shot and the rebound goes right to another Azz player for a layup or the ball bounces off the underside of the backboard and they get a layup and a foul during a scramble for the loose ball.
