I know he's disappointed, but is that in part due to his draft position? Take the fact that he was the overall 6th pick out of the equation, and isn't he still a decent starter in the NFL as a 3-4 OLB?

Zero sacks in 3 years.

I guess he'd be a camp body at best, but he really has had zero impact at any level.
During the combine it was pointed out there are players who exceed standards because they are natural standouts and then there are those who are thought of as exceeding because coaches scheme them to be in the right place doing the right thing.
They mentioned that between the later and the combine Golston (by name specifically) was a late riser.

Still, bring him in. He can be our Calvin Pace...
wait...

All he had to do was get 1 sack and he would have banked a 9 million dollar bonus.

Biggest draft bust during the 2000 to 2009 draft era?

Are you serious?!

No joke. It is one of those incentives to help get around the salary cap. You wouldn't believe how many players get a bonus for stupid stuff such as a workout bonus for showing up to at least 1 offseason workout, or at least one special teams tackle, or to play in 10% of the snaps.

Agents play the game as well, to get the over inflated contract even higher and get the "total value" look great in the media they will work in bonuses that a player will never get just so the team will sign off on it but still look like a great contract in the media to prospective clients. Things such as an OL gets 1 mill for catching 5 passes in one season, or a safety that has to kick a field goal to get a bonus, or some other outlandish stuff like that. Bonuses they will never get but looks great when you tell the media the deal is worth 5 years 50 million.

Agents also use such clauses to force a new contract. 9M for 1 sack was a way to force Jets to deal again. Didn't the CARDS have something similar with Fitz that forced them to deal with him :D

He did trigger enough incentives to be paid $16mil a year, though I don't remember exactly what the incentives were.

I think that any team that brings in Gholston could be happily surprised. Once he gets that first sack, he might finally clear the mental hurdle that's keeping him from pulling it off. I'd consider the guy for the minimum and give him a chance to compete in camp. If he still sucks, axe him, but there's just this weird inkling that I have that he'll be a good player at some point.

Jamarcus who? Heyward Bey? Charles Rogers? Courtney Brown?

Courtney Brown at least recorded 11 sacks his first 3 years.
Bey actually improved with someone else throwing him the ball last year.
Rogers at least scored some TD's.

Forgot about Jamarcus.

He wasn't part of the Jet releases, yesterday, from what I gather.

Probably a coincidence but what do Brown, Gholston and Rogers have in common? ;)
