Lots of talk on various pass rushers who arent (currently) UFAs, but might be a trade target--

Trey Hendrickson of the Bengals was mentioned by Harry
Maxx Crosby of the Raiders was rumored in a SI.com post

Ill add a target to think about:

Bradley Chubb of the Dolphins.

Why would the Dolphins trade him? They are currently $18mm over the effective cap. Further, they have younger/cheaper pass rushers in Jaelen Phillips and Chop Robinson. Also: Chubb tore his ACL in the final game of the 2023 season (12/31/23) and didnt play at all this past season.

so there is risk there, but it also should reduce the draft pick compensation required.

Chubb is 28 and signed through the 2027 season at annual comp of ~$19.5mm. Very good but not great production when healthy.

Might also be worthwhile to see if Khalil Mack wants to roll it back one more year...assuming we draft a guy.
Mack is old but he was still effective and 35 ain't always the end of the world for these guys....didn't we have like a 40 year old guy about a decade ago?

We got decent production out of an old Dwight Freeney and John Abraham.

Not going after a guy like Calais this last offseason is very irritating to me. He wouldn't have cost much, and would have added much needed performance and professionalism. He would have been a far better signing than Jones or Nichols.

No longer a high sack guy.

he is a free agent

after the Raiders, Bears and Chargers --- maybe he signs somewhere with a bit more direct path to contending for a Superbowl

I could see the Bills signing him to take Von Miller's spot

It's so gross but if I am Monti, I am looking real closely at Chase Young. Tied for 13th in the NFL in pressures. Still 25. Played 60% of snaps. Not a ton of sacks so you get a bit of a discount. (I know I am not the first person on here to mention this, but have been looking closer at it). 3yrs for 39mil.

has Chase Young ever gotten a multi-year deal after his draft contract was up? I see no reason to hamstring this team moving forward with that type of contract for a mercenary. He's a bad culture, mid production guy. If we're that desperate for a pass rusher, offer hima one year deal, but if we're in that position, we're screwed at EDGE anyway going into next year unless Robinson blossoms or BJ miraculously comes back healthy AND even better than he was in his non-descript rookie season.

I don't think a 3 year deal could screw us TBH. I would be fine with a 2 year deal as well.

Does he fit our team culture and can JG coach him up?

He is only 25 but has also only played a full season one time (2024). Most of the others, he played 50% of the games.

I think he is too risky for us, may not fit into the culture, and not sure he is the type of edge defender JG likes.

Ok. This isn't going to happen so I will not discuss it anymore.

This board is funny. On one hand they don't stop talking about how the Edge rush needs upgrading, and on the other they get their panties in a twist over signing a former college superstar and number 2 overall pick that has averaged a sack every 2.8 games and is only 25 years old, because some rumours from a majorly dysfunctional Washington franchise said he had a bad attitude? I'd have had a bad attitude in that crap show.

The edge market sucks and Young is probably the only guy with any potential. $13m per is peanuts. Alex Highsmith is on $17m and had 13 sacks the last 2 years. Uchenna Nwosu is on $15m and his best year by far is 9.5 sacks in 2022.

I'd snatch his hand off for $13M X 3 knowing at worse I'm breaking even based on his current level of play, and hoping this the system suits him and he find his old form again. That's an all upside deal.

Beggars can't be choosers.
