Wanted

Based upon Mark Millar's explosive graphic novel series and helmed by the stunning visualist director Timur Bekmambetov--creator of the most successful Russian film franchise in history, the "Night Watch" series--"Wanted" tells the story of one invisible drone's transformation into a dark avenger. In 2008, the world will be introduced to a superhero for a new millennium: Wesley Gibson.

25-year-old account manager Wes (James McAvoy) was the most pathetic, cube-dwelling hypochondriac the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend cheated on him daily and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this weakling would never amount to anything. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die a slow, clock-punching death.

Until he became Wanted.

After the murder of a father he never knew, Wes discovers powers beyond his dreams. He becomes the latest recruit in the Fraternity--a secret society of assassins--and develops lightning-quick reflexes with superhuman agility. Wes soon learns his league of henchmen has but one mission: carry out the death orders of the mythological Fates, weavers of every man's lifeline.

With wickedly brilliant tutors, he morphs into a killing machine and starts erasing one bad guy after another. But as Wes grows into the mantle passed down by his father...he discovers his clan members are not exactly the enforcers of justice they claim to be. Just as he gets everything he ever Wanted, Wesley Gibson will learn that with the ability to deliver death comes an even more difficult power...controlling your own life.

MArk Millar is very close to a comic-book genius. And yes, I mean that like Lex Luthor (albiet, a drunk, scottish Luthor).

I loved this movie. The office scenes and narrative inner-thoughts reminded me of Norton in Fight Club.

The action was very Matrix like.

I was very entertained.

This movie was the dumbest movie I have seen in a long time. I went with 5 people and none of us liked it in the slightest.

Friend of mine got to watch them film a car crash scene here in Chicago. They were walking down the street and a producer yelled at them "what are you doing here?"

Friend said "we are going home."

That's funny because one of the girls with us fell asleep as well.

When they flipped a car onto a bus, hitting the bus with such force that the car forced the bus on to it's side, and then drove their car off the bus and down the street, I had had enough.

That stuff really happens Chris. That whole stunt where they drove at each other and he flipped the car over the badguy car in order to shoot the guy through the sunroof scene? Do you remember? They got that from a high speed police chase here in vegas where it actually happened. Ill let you try and figure out who the cop was that accomplished such a feet :D

Ill give you a hint but it would be to easy.

I was expecting over-the-top action sequences, so I could suspend disbelief there. What I wasn't expecting was the unbelievable stupidity of some of the writing.

His dad needed to invest in a telephone (or a couple of cans and a string) to call Wes and say, "I'm your dad, we need to get out of here." That would have ended the movie in 5 minutes, but still, it's ridiculous that he lived next door to him for that long and the only way he could think to protect his son was by trying to kidnap him in a pharmacy.

Let me get this straight, Morgan Freeman was a liar, he let Wes divulge all of his secrets to the Fraternity in the final showdown (instead of just shooting him) and then, everyone just believes that the guy who's been lying to them all this time is telling the truth when he says they all had their names come up and need to kill themselves or kill Wes? Really? REALLY??? And, he must have paid the look-a-like at the very end of the movie a hell of a lot of money to be so happy when he turned around to see Freeman pointing a gun at his head.

When Jolie was telling the story about a little girl, I seriously could not believe they were going that route? Really? Was it one of her friends that she grew up with, is that who it is Fox? It must be, because you started the story out with "there was this girl" so it couldn't possibly be you could it? Oh my gosh, you fooled us! It WAS you, we know because of the scar on you neck! WOW, how clever! :sarcasm:

I'll see it on Saturday. Anthing for a change in summer movie fare.

I've had enough of comic book inspired movies the last few years. Can't stomach any more for a while. Going to see Wall-E too in mid week if I get up the guts to put up with all the kids.

Jim,

I hate to break it to you but this is a comic book inspired movie.

The comic book was really polarizing--people either loved it or hated it. Those that hated it felt that there was really no "hero;" there was no one to root for because even the best of the worst characters were still rapists and murderers. Those that liked it thought it had an interesting message: break out of your routine and find yourself.

I think it was a great idea that maybe was not fully realized. I actually enjoyed the movie. Thought it was fun and full of action. It also seemed very "origin" in concept. I too liked the narration from the main character. His journey to me was the crux of the entire storyline. I could see a sequel being much better.

Again, to me this is just a fun popcorn movie. If you take that approach you won't be disappointed. If your looking for a heady action thriller...move on.

I've seen worse, but I don't remember when. I was stunned that Morgan Freeman would lend his talents to drek like this.

Way, way, way, way, way too far over the top, especially when it took itself too seriously (with 2 mildly comic moments). You can take that in a movie like The Matrix, where all the action took place in their heads/computer simulation, or Live Free or Die Hard, where you felt like Willis was mugging for the camera every now and then, but about the third time when they shot each other's bullets out of the air, I could feel enamel falling off my teeth where I was grinding them.

The special effects were nice, particularly the train at the end, but not awesome. This was about the only saving grace of the film.

The plot was screwy and predictable, even the "twist" (did anyone really not see it coming?) And the gratuitous bloody head shots just got boring and repulsive, there were so many of them. Also, I don't believe I've seen so much spit come out of someone's mouth (McAvoy's) since the drool bucket skit on SNL.

And Angelina Jolie looked positively anorexic. Her hands and head look way too large, because the rest of her body seemed to be made of 1/2 inch pipe covered with skin. Of course, the idea of someone built like her being able to kick arse is virtually impossible. Mass matters and you have to have muscles to make the body work: She appears to have none. A real beauty in her youth, she looked haggard a good part of this movie. Too bad.

1.9 out of 5 stars, and most of that for the special effects. :thumbdown

I liked it. It wasn't the best movie of the summer by far, but it didn't break the streak of all the movies I've seen this year as being pretty good. I have yet to see a bad movie this summer--of course, I haven't seen The Happening or Hancock yet, so the streak is in danger because Hellboy II and Hancock are probably next.

I'll be seeing Dark Knight next Wednesday, so at least I'll have what could be the best film of the year right there.

Hey Chap have they ever or can they award an oscar posthumously? Thought it may be a possibility in Ledgers case?

Yes--two posthumous Oscars have been awarded, one for the writer of Gone With The Wind and the other a Best Actor Oscar for Peter Finch in Network.

There has been one actor who has been nominated posthumously TWICE: James Dean for Giant and East of Eden.

So a nom for Ledger is not out of the question.

During the filming of this movie her mother died and she reportedly suffered from a lot of depression which might explain the weight loss.
