Will his retirement enable the Cards to sign another free-agent for the same money that Warner was due?

Or does the rule only apply to player whose contracts run out?

If yes the Cards could sign 2 major FAs to replace Dansby and Warner.

Only guys whos contract run out can be used on UFA but I believe Kurts money can be used on draft picks and released players right Joe? We can sign any released player we want if I recall.

His retirement only save the team 4 or 5 million - his 2010 base salary. This is why the team was hesitant to meet his signing bonus demands. They effectively paid him 19 million for 2009 between bonus and salary.

Warner will pay back some of his signing bonus without a doubt. Also note that the Cards deferred half of his 15 mill signing bonus. Meaning Warner has not been given 7.5 mill of his signing bonus yet.

Is it optional or does Kurt HAVE to return the $? I didn't know about the deferment. I thought Bonuses had to be paid within 24 hours of the signing.

It is optional but 95% of players that have retired have negotiated some form of bonus payback behind closed doors.

As for the bolded that isnt true. For cap purposes it automatically counts but in terms of when the player gets paid it depends on what he works out with ownership. They could pay him the full 15 mill or they could do a payment plan where Kurt gets a 1mill check once a year for 15 years. For example and this is baseball situation, I am not sure if you know about the Dbacks situation but they differed multiple payments to many players during their world series run, in fact they are still paying differed payments to some of those players.

I have heard it in baseball for salaries, just never in the NFL. Good to know!!

If true, then he won't be paid that (since he only fulfilled half his contract), and that will be the end of it.

And getting back to the thread's intention, it means the Cardinals are not spending 11-13 million this year they were going to have to pay Warner for 2010. That means more cash to spend.

So basically this screws the Cards because in an offseason where they already are limited in the FA market they are now forced to bring in one more QB.

To me that is costing Warner a lot of reputation. He should have just signed a 1 year deal when he wanted to possibly retire.

No, Cards will end up giving him something, most teams do to players they like and retire. Not just as a gift but they don't want any bad blood with a fan favorite or bad press.

Dont worry about being limited in the free agent market that will already be devoid of talent because of the RFA rules. These top 8 rules everyone is so afraid about just isnt that scary when you look at the details.

1. We can sign 1 guy at a first year salary of 4.5 (I have heard up to 5.5 actually from a few sources it depends on what the revenue was last year).
2. We can sign as many players to a first year salary of 3.5 (again I have heard as high as 4 mill)
3. We can sign as many cut or non tendered RFA or EFA's as we want to, no matter what the salary is
4. The whole let one go get one back rule.

If you look at those rules the all pretty much fit into our yearly free agent style over the last 3 years anyways. You can easily find really good backup QB for a first year salary of 4.5 mill or less.

Big BQ!
OK...Should they stand pat and keep the same ol' plodding FO or should they turn it in for a newer better faster design? More expensive?! Or would it be better?
