With Warner nearing the end of road and under contract for only one year and McCown still unproven and possibly benched and under contract for only one year and John Navarre just now entering his second season (whew!) - does it look like we'll be drafting a quarterback high this season or do we go through this whole process of looking for a starter again next offseason?Best guesstimates?

Additional thoughts on the signing -

1. I guess this counts $4mil against the cap. (I've been assuming we had room for four more FA's - including Warner - at $3.5 mil a pop for Year 1). So you've got to figure one guy (probably Mili) will hit our cap a bit less than the $3.5 mil average.

2. We won't know what Kurt can do for us til we see him on the field. But I do believe he was the best option we had for assemblying a 2 QB tandem we could have some degree of confidence in.

3. I like the signing a lot. I'm not that concerned about the contract being only for one-year. If he does really well, he'll have every right to command more money in the following years(s) (and it probably will make sense for the Cardinals to pay it). And if he doesn't, well, Josh McCown will be further along in his development

4. Welcome to the Valley, Kurt. I'm excited.

don't be so sure. Josh just may step up and take the job

book mark this - just in case I'm wrong - you'd have a good one to come back and have fun with me - JOSH WILL NOT STEP AND TAKE THE JOB FROM WARNER AND TO THINK SO IS LUNACY - Not even Denny believes in his sorry mopey dopey houndog ass - and I wouldn't be shocked if his tender is taken back(though I don't think that will happen).

I am ECSTATIC with this news - Josh freaking sucked - period - for all this talk about him passing the learning curve, I just had to shake my head and ask what offense are you watching that scores 10, 7 and 6 points in the first three quarters of the Niners, Hawks and Bucs games.

Thank god we have DG.

I think this is a great move. Warner was the best of the FA QB's this offseason.

I predict that Kurt Warner will be the NFL Comeback Player of the Year! :koolaid:

The first person presented with a new jersey if I had a guess would be the first Cards pick in the draft. I would say the #8 pick in the draft but I have a feeling that won't be where we end up picking a player.

For me this will be the most important signing of the year. We have instantly gained some credability in the most important position on the team. There are better players we may sign at their position but the QB remains the one position that can impact a team quicker than any other. I would not be surprised to see Quan come around now that we have signed Warner and I think other FA who might not otherwise give us a look now will. Many do not like Warner but I think he was the best available and with our receivers all we need now is that RB which i now think we take in round one. Sure he will comptete with Josh but if you think JM will beat out Warner you are dreaming. Injury is the only thing that will keep him form being our starting QB. Our draft just went from a D to a C+ and we could go to a B with another good signing. DG & Graves I just gained a little more confidence in you.

No one, walking in, is paying 4 million a year for a backup. Warner is our starter and JM is his backup. By the way, JM as a backup gives the Cards a solid 1-2 at the qb.

you just haven't learned yet about DG have you? Marcel Shipp is our starter, Pete Kendall is one of my five guys and on and on and on.

What DG says don't mean squat - he wouldn't squander 4 million dollars of precious cap space in his second year if he didn't know who his QB was gonna be - to think otherwise is insanely naive IMO.

using the example you used.. wouldn't it be fair to say that just because someone is making "x" amount money it does not guarantee anything as far as playing time goes.

I really hope you will reconsider this statement. It scares me after last year in which you proclaimed Josh McCown to be the answer.

man - good point.

And Clif - AGAIN - like I said in the other thread - DEXTER, SHELTON AND KENDALL WEREN'T GUYS DG WANTED - DG OBVIOUSLY WANTED KURT WARNER - HE'S NOT GOING TO PAY HIM TO SIT ON THE BENCH.

None of this matters - Warner and any other mediocre QB could beat out Josh blindfolded so who cares.

I am with Cheesebeef on this one. We did not pay Warner $4 million to carry a clipboard.

Warner was clearly the better of the QB's available. Nice signing.

If he can cut down his fumbles and sacks, we will really have a potent passing attack. Now to go after a stud RB...

if we were to get either Bennett, Henry or a back with the number 8 pick, singed Okeafor and just an average corner - I'd say this offseason was a ROUSING usccess. Goodmoves so far guys - keep 'em coming.

Interesting view on Warner from a Giants fan (posted on the official board):

Hello.Thought Id give you guys a view of Warner who watched every game last year.Ill start with the bad.He held the ball too long.He fumbled a few times. And heres why..#1.Our Oline sucked last year plain and simple. We moved people around tring to see what postion they were going to play.Injuries and such hurt us too.#2..Our recievers could not get open.Toomer had a hamstring injury which really hurt him last year.To his credit he did play though it just not at the same level he has played in the past.Hillard nerver played up to expectation and this year hes finally gone.Tim Carter our down the field threat got another injury which put him out for the year. And Shockey was reduce to a blocking tight end due to poor line play.Warners partly to balme for holding on to the ball to long but thats only because he was trying to make something happen.Waiting for guys to get open like he did with the Rams. Now for the positves.
THIS GUY CAN STILL PLAY.He is not a runner but did scramble a few times when it counted.More importantly he would move up in the pocket well to try and buy some extra time to make a play down the field. His throws were accurate. Most of the incompletions last year were our recievers fault who droped a #$$%load of balls. As for him losing his job you have to relize that we had the #! draft pick Eli Manning waiting in the wings and it was going to happen sooner or later. After losing 2 games that most thought we should have won and the pressure of the NY media Coughlin made the change. My understanding of your team is you guys have some wideouts with some speed.People that can make a move and get open. That should make a world of difference .I wish we could have kept him but I knew after watching him in our injured offence last year that he would get a starting job somewhere else.
You guys got a player who I belive can still play at a very high level in the NFL and you should be happy.ONE LAST THING.I read some post about him not being a team player and stuff.THATS BS.After losing the starting job he was a class act and supported and encouraged Eli and was cheering for him on the sidelines. In the media he said yes I wish I was plying but the Giants are moving in another direction and I support that.I think you guys are lucky to land him.Even doubters will be pleasently surprized.

I think it means the Cardinals will draft a QB in rds 1 or 2. The team has to build a winner going in to the new stadium. We may get one year out of Warner. But, Denny needs to have his QB of the future on the roster this season. Unless thats McCown or Navarre, we have to draft one. I like C Frye (Akron) or J Campbell (Auburn) with our 2nd rd pick.

Good find arthurracoon. I really like the signing of Kurt Warner. I just wish it was longer than 1 year because I believe he can do the job and do it well for us.
